I went looking all over the place yesterday for Sobe Gyro only to realize that it doesn’t exist anymore! It’s been replaced by a Vietnamese restaurant at 540 Washington Ave. So much for finding a good gyro place in Miami.

This is a hidden gem amongst the crappy south beach tourist eateries on Washington. The food is fresh and very tasty. The owner, a Greek woman who is very pleasant and inviting, is usually there making anything you order from scratch. Don’t be fooled by the location or the size of this place, if you want real greek food, try Sobe Gyro. I recommend the gyro burger. It’s not your traditional greek dish, but it’s amazing; pita, deliciously spiced ground beef, cheese, tomato and tzaziki sauce. Also try her spanakopita and her desserts.

I’ve been craving a gyro from SOBE Gyro for about a month now(they were closed over x-mas and New Years and I’ve been in and out of town). I even went to 2 other places to have a gyro. No comparison! The gyros here are great; fresh, hot, flavorful, great proportion of ingredients, and inexpensive. Love it! Never gotten delivery, but they advertise that they deliver. Hmmm… not sure of their business hours or until what time they deliver.(Sorry!) Pitas(Gyro, chicken, souvlaki, lamb, burger, grilled veggie, falafel) — $ 6.50 Platters(Gyro, chicken, souvlaki, lamb kebab, burger) — $ 9.50 Also have sandwiches and sides such and hummus w/pita and tzatziki w/pita and spinach pie and more. Plus plenty of drink choices. Great local spot for a quick lunch or fast and light dinner. So happy it’s in my neighboorhood! Can’t wait to try something new, but every time I go I see and smell the meat for the gyro and before I know it, It’s already been made for me and I’m paying. I call it the Gyro Blackout.

I think this place used to be Miami Gyro, and now it has new owners? Maybe someone knows more than me. Anyway, it was recommended by a Greek friend of a friend, but I still wasn’t sure what to expect. From the look/location, I always figured it was just another overpriced tourist spot. I was wrong on both counts. I believe it was the owner who served us, and I believe her name was Anna(at least 3 people walked in while we were there and greeted her by name — regulars are a good sign). Everything was made fresh to order. Seriously, we ordered a platter with fries and she started peeling a potato — no exaggeration. But it was worth the wait. The grape leaves were yummy and the the souvlaki was delish — cooked to perfection. The boyfriend got the gyro, which was a little different then I’m used to — the meat seemed more pulled than ground. But maybe it’s just more authentic and I’ve been eating fake gyros all my life, what do I know? In any case, we enjoyed it. I asked the owner if she had any baklava for dessert, she said she didn’t have any that night but she had a walnut cake. YUM. Soaked in a honey syrup, this thing is addictive. Everything on the menu is under $ 10. We sat at a table outside, it was a quiet breezy night and perfectly pleasant, inside was a bit too hot. We’re definitely going to become some of the regulars.
