Doctor Delgado gives his expert advice regarding many subjects on a local Hispanic channel. The first time I saw him I said«what the hell is my doctor doing on TV?» My mother in law, bless her soul, was present and filled me in by saying that he is always on the news, and that he has been making appearances for many years. And that she has seen him countless times. That time the news were about the last outbreak of cholera in Cuba. I paid close attention. Doctor Delgado was talking about illegal septic tanks and the lack of regulation that is causing cholera to spread chronically in the island of Cuba. When I saw him my reaction was to say«what the hell does my doctor know about Cuba? He never goes there». Someone said(most likely my mother in law) «Bueno, imaginate». Then it all dawned on me. No wonder whenever I go to the doctor’s office it is always full, literally. Patients have to wait in the hallway because there are not enough chairs in the office. You may think I am radical, but that TV thing is out of hand and I am getting a new doctor. Not because doctor Delgado is a bad doctor, but he is always rushing to see a million patients. He is very busy, and so am I, but he doesn’t spend enough time with me. He is not the type of doctor that will explain what is happening to you or talk about diseases or medicine in general. Every time I go, it’s like rush hour at Starbucks, and most consultations end up in a referral to see a specialist. If you add to that the time that it takes to see the doctor, then that explains the stars missing from the rating scale. I know the word«promptly» doesn’t exist, at all, at the doctor’s office, but at least give me a chair and let me sit down to wait. Other than that, it’s all good. I have been going there for so long that I have earned some perks, like calling and getting a prescription sent to a pharmacy, which saves me a trip. Or calling to get an absent note for work without having to wait in the lobby. But the perks don’t tip the balance on his favor. I want a doctor that talks to his patients, has a less hectic schedule, and maybe explains things better. For that reason, so long Doc. We are breaking up.
