Gelateria Uno

I was walking around downtown when I noticed this place. I was in the mood for gelato but was skeptical about this place since the signs outside indicated the shop specialized in gelato/pizza.a strange combo. Surprisingly, the gelato looked very appealing upon entering and was pretty good. The staff was friendly, even humoring our requests to try a bazillion different samples before making our choice. For $ 1.50 a cone/​cup, you can’t go wrong.

I was on my way to see what was at Pesen’s when I noticed the gelato cart filled with many flavors. I couldn’t help myself and had to get some. After lunch I went ahead and ordered a medium with a scoop of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry each.
Out of all of the flavors, the chocolate was the best. While this surprised me – I usually like vanilla more than chocolate — I was more surprised by the heinous aftertaste. All of the gelato comes with this fake-​sugar aftertaste that just killed the entire experience for me. I don’t know that I would try this gelato again. It is sad since the chocolate didn’t taste bad until after I was done with it.

Freshly-​made gelato (made with all natural jelly) made available in downtown is hard to find without having to go to Brickell or Bayside, especially at night.
So it came to a surprise when a young Nicaraguan girl was serving gelato at an empty street on this stretch of NE 2^nd Avenue across from Bali Café. They had brought out the gelato stand outdoors so people could be tempted to look inside to see their offerings.
While this is not my favorite gelato place, I have to say the chocolate flavor and the flavor comprising of a mixture of berries made for a good combination and it was tasty. Additionally, two good scoops (for a size small) with a waffle cone on top for less than $ 3 was a bargain to be had as most other gelaterias I’ve seen are quite overpriced.
They’re open until 6:30 or 7 pm at night and will be opening later until 8 pm soon — and probably adding more things to the menu as well.
Downtown needs more of these affordable treats managed by friendly people.
