Purple Heart Veterans Pick Up Service

We received a post card in the mail and were so excited to donate several boxes of clothes and house hold items as we were going to donate to salvation army. The day before pick up we get a call to confirm our scheduled pick up time but nobody came. I called to ask why they didn’t come however they claimed, the driver claimed they couldn’t see our mountain of 18 boxes which we put curb side since it was a large pick up to avoid having the driver go up and down stairs not to mention adding two signs indicating purple heart donations, then he went on to say that the pick up service had just cancelled the night before but that the pick up service they were using would complete previous pick up requests, so he claimed to follow up the next day and that a pick up would occur the next day. Yeah right! I called after 4pm just to have another person say they wouldn’t come. What?!? He offered another charity however it was the same phone number for all 3 organisations so I passed and now have to donate else where. Great now I have to move all this stuff again.. .. What a waste of time.

I wish I could give it no stars. Two days in a row and still no pick up. I’m done sitting home & waiting for them. Our stuff is in the garage because it has been raining. I didn’t think they’d want linens & electronics left in the rain. Put a note on the door «ring the door bell or call this # and we will open up the garage». How hard is that? I’ll be calling the Salvation Army.
And, most of the money they make goes to administration, NOT the veterans they supposedly help.

I contacted Purple Heart via email inquiry yesterday evening. See, my crazy ex-​SIL claims she donated gifts I sent to my little nephew, including a $ 50 custom puzzle bearing his name, to Purple Heart.
I didn’t really care about most of the things I sent that my ex-​SIL claims she donated (games, toys, clothes, books, a teddy bear), but that puzzle was costly and made especially for my nephew. Needless to say I felt like a tool calling an organization whose mission it is to help others and collect donations — not return them. Still, I wanted to see if I could retrieve just that puzzle.
Joyce called me early this morning asking for more information and offered to help locate the (allegedly) donated puzzle. She was very nice and, though I held my tongue and wasn’t bashing my ex-​SIL, seemed to understand what a terrible situation it was.
When she exhausted the digital records, she told me she would look through paper records. Joyce called me back in the late afternoon to tell me that my ex-​SIL did not, in fact, donate any items.
I really appreciate how thoughtful Joyce was and how accommodating she was. I know she — and those who work at Purple Heart — have much better things to do with their time than to try and track down a single item. Still, I appreciate the time Joyce took out of her day and the compassion she showed by trying to locate the item.
I haven’t done so yet, but would gladly donate to them in the future.

I scheduled a pick up. Being a Veteran I thought this would be the way to go. I even put the bag on the front porch a day ahead and they never picked it up.

Purple Heart has been picking up from our residence for a month every Friday without fail. Last Friday, our daughter accidentally gave away a huge bag of her Build A Bear stuffed animals. We were not expecting the staff to actually find the bag, as they receive so many boxes and bags for donations. We received a call the following day that the stuffed animals were located and Purple Heart will return it with their next trip to our home. I really wish that they can accept check donations. Great staff. Joyce was very friendly and very patient with writing down all of the description of animals that were missing. Thank you!

I didn’t even have a donation for them but just returned for a trip and found a note between my doors (i.e. your donation was not ready for us when we arrived). Obviously they missed some neighbor’s pick-​up and didn’t have the correct street address. Glad I give to Salvation Army, Epilepsy Foundation, and Vietnam Vets. Never had a problem.

Pam Zekman reviewed this charity and other pick-​up clothing charities. Not much money goes to the vets. Most of the profit goes to the people running the organization. Kinda a scam on us who want to help vets. Salvation Army is better.

I had a lot of stuff to donate. We got a call from the Purple heart veterans… yes, they called us and the pick up date was set. They sent out their card to attach to the stuff. I got up at 6 AM yesterday and Christopher and I carried everything down to the hallway for pickup. Unfortunately, I still have a lot of stuff to donate because they never came for my things or for the people across the street who also had bags waiting on their porch.
This is the second time this has happened and now I have gotten annoyed. To make matters worse you can’t get through to a live person. I cannot carry all that stuff back into the house again like I did last time, so I called the Salvation Army once again. I will never use the Veterans again for large pick ups. I want to support them, but the organization is unfortunately unreliable.
