Club Timbuktu is the best place in MKE to shake a likkle ting to good reggae & dancehall music. Friday & Saturday nights, there’s usually a DJ spinning or a band playing– usually an eclectic mix of African, Afro-Caribbean, Ska, Reggae, Afro-Cuban & Caribbean sound bands. If you can sit inside Timbuktu on those nights and somehow manage to NOT dance… you’re probably dead or undead, in which case you should really have that checked out by a doctor. Timbuktu also regularly hosts daytime events with local West African dance/drum troupes that are family friendly. The rum punch will knock you out of your dancing shoes; go easy on ‘em. They’re delicious though! The bartenders are always friendly & the service is usually decent enough even in a large crowd. I’ve never eaten there, but my best friend eats here during the day frequently, & takes her kids there for lunch. I LOVE dancing here. On a good night, when the music is good, the dance floor is usually packed with people who love to dance too. My only complaint would be that sometimes there’s a different DJ from week to week, & some of them play«regular» music that you might hear on urban radio… I loathe urban radio. I didn’t come to hear that crap; I can hear that in any other bar in the city. But who could possibly be upset at anything when there’s good reggae music playing? Certainly not I.

Really fun atmosphere and crowd and pretty good food as well. I went to here a Mali blues act and eat some okra stew. I dug it for sure. It was a little odd eating stew at a bar in a club environment, but odd in a way that I could get used to. I’ll be back I’m sure.

Go Riverwest! My favorite Milwaukee neighborhood that I don’t live in. On Center and Holton comes this gem of a restaurant/nightclub. The dinner service is superb, and the nightclub portion brings reggae, ska and African acts to the city. It’s a friendly, diverse atmosphere, and quickly becoming a popular hangout for African transplants living in Milwaukee. Great place.
