Sometimes service triumphs over amenities as in this case at the HIE and thus can earn an extra star. Yes the hotel is currently a bit of a disaster because of construction upgrades but the people at the desk went above and beyond the call of service. The comp breakfast here is slightly better than most other hotels. At least this hotel offers hot eggs that look and feel more real than powdered garbage I’ve seen at other hotels. Hiding in the mini fridge under the yogurts you’ll find some hardboiled eggs(which came pre-shelled out of a water bag from somewhere). I don’t eat pork but there’s plenty of bacon and sausage to be had. However be sure to get to breakfast early enough because once they run out of egg & cheese omelets they won’t make any more. Trains don’t run very often but you can avoid them by asking for an odd numbered room facing the other side of the hotel. As soon as the remodeling is done, I think this HIE will be a very strong four-star venue. Be sure to ask the front desk for their discount cards to local eateries.

While this hotel was under construction, I room was very comfortable and the construction did not disturb my stay at all. It was a very high class room in fact. I loved the granite topped work table — make it much easier to work and write in the evenings.

The hotel is close to a lot of things in the area. The hotel was under renovations so that made for an interesting trip to the room. I look forward to coming back after renovations are completed. The bed was very firm and not real comfortable. The didn’t have firm pillows, only soft which was like no pillow at all. The carpet was clean. The room was well maintained. The bedroom in the room with a door was nice to try to shut out the noise of other guests. The walls appear to be very thin as you can hear talking and TV’s. Hopefully the remodel will address some of these issues.

I recently stayed at this Holiday Inn while visiting my daughter who goes to college in St. Paul.(It was the high school basketball tournament weekend and I dead set on using my horde of Priority Club points to book a room, so that’s how I ended up in on the west side of the Twin Cities.) Overall, it was a good stay. While you will never confuse this facility for the Four Seasons, it was a good value for the price. The rooms and common areas were clean and well maintained. The rooms were relatively sound proof, though some noise came through in the space below the door between the adjoining rooms. One of the best attributes of the room was the powerful water pressure in the shower. Combine that with a good cup of coffee and you’ll be ready to conquer the world. Other observations and ramblings: * The speed of the wi-fi was excellent. I did not like that I had to repeatedly enter the password to stay connected. * I like that they provide a combination of firm and soft pillows. * There was a broken lamp in the room when we arrived. I called housekeeping and they promptly replaced it. * The quality of the food in the free breakfast was on par with most other Holiday Inn Express hotels(i.e. — not very good). The hotel was busy during our stay and the staff actively replenished the items in the buffet. Ditto for the free coffee, while marginal in quality, it was always fresh and hot. * If you are a connoisseur of suburban office parks, you’ll enjoy the view from your window. * The fitness center(two treadmills, one elliptical and one stationary bike) was small but clean. The deck on one of the treadmills had a lot of wobble at slow speeds. * They had complimentary local newspapers on the weekend. Is this my top place to stay when visiting the Twin Cities — probably not. However, I would have no qualms about staying there if I had business in that area.

Me and my family stayed here saturday night to celebrate my 23rd birthday. The service was pretty good overall(really liked the cute guy working the desk when we checked in :) The hotel was a bit smaller then some. There was a pool and hot tub which was really nice. The hot tub was actually hot and not luke warm like some hotels I have been too. They even had a movie night– where down in the seating area they showed Radio and had popcorn which was really nice, which one would not expect to find at most hotels(no one else besides my family was down there though). The breakfast consisted of some hot items such as cheese omelets, sausage, bisquits and gravy, boiled eggs, as well as cold items such as mini bagels, premade waffles, donuts, cereal, yogurt etc. So it was a nice breakfast — more then you would get at some other express type hotels. The shuttle drivers will even drive you to restaurants nearbye which was great.
