This was a pleasant surprise. After living in Minneapolis for 10 years, figured we needed to try this institution out. There are two sections, the front bar(classic supper club feel) and the back restaurant which was a little less cozy, but still a nice space. The food is amazing and a good value. It’s not that it’s cheap, it’s that the quality is high and the prices are below other steak houses. The pork chop was really amazing, and the wine is reasonable. They have traditional meat offerings but also lean towards some Cajun dishes, which will tempt me on a return trip. The service was fast and friendly. There is valet parking but no lot.

My boyfriend and I went on a Wednesday evening around 7pm. We were seated promptly & had a server at our table within 5 minutes. The restaurant itself is a little old-looking & cramped, but that’s part of the charm and legitimacy to the place. I thought the wine list was great. I ordered the vegetarian Cajun pasta & my boyfriend ordered an 8 oz. filet done medium. I thought my pasta was good, nothing special, but certainly good. My boyfriend’s steak arrived rare & had to be sent back. Normally I hate hassling restaurant staff(being a server myself), but it was red all the way through and a far cry from medium. Friendly & prompt service, but the quality of the food left a little to be desired(at least in our experience).

Ok, we went the first time here. BRUNCH Selection is limited to typical American food. Nothing special. So been there, done that — not coming back.

Extremely disappointed in this place. We came here as part of a weekend getaway with my wife and based on the 4 star rating made reservations. From the start we were concerned with the strip club next door and the out dated and tacky décor. It was a busy Saturday night so we decided to stay since we had reservations and were hungry. Big mistake! The high point was the corn chowder with crab. The rest ranged from meh to I can’t even eat that… We ordered a bottle of wine that the waitress recommended which had a considerable amount of sediment, so they put it in a decanter. It wasn’t any good and we couldn’t drink it, but the waitress never stopped back to tell her or ask for something else. The bus boy(actually a man) had severe body odor which was quite gross while trying to eat. I ordered the pork chops and my wife ordered the filet with blue cheese crust. The pork was OK, a bit dry honestly and not as good as I was expecting. My wife’s steak was under cooked(red cool center) and they didn’t add the blue cheese she ordered. She barely ate any of it. When the waitress finally came back and realized we barely touched our food, didn’t drink the wine and wanted to leave, she offered us some free ice cream. Seriously, $ 180 worth of below average food and wine and we’re compensated with an offer for ice cream. Instead we went a couple blocks North to another place for a nice desert and some good wine in an attempt to salvage the evening out. There are so many better choices if you’re looking for good food and service.

Went here for a bachelor party dinner in October 2014. Had a private room in back, dedicated server and a great time. There were about 15 of us. Apps and drinks were all excellent. I can’t say enough about the pork chops! They’re immense. The corn bread with honey was also awesome.

First time here in quite a bit and I’m sure both JD and Hoyt are rolling in their graves! Between fighting off fruit flys while trying to eat and the rude way the manager acknowledged our pointing this fact out its a definite NO! My date didn’t even order anything he was so disgusted with the fruit fly takeover with the appetizer. Never in my 47 years of dining ALLOVERTHEWORLD have I experienced such a ridiculous manager. She said«I’m just the manager here, I’m not an owner.» As well as «we just had health inspectors in.» Buckle up they’ll be back soon! Have you heard of the Internet? Well guess what sweetie, you probably won’t have to be worried about being a manger for much longer either. My advice is NOPE, not even if it’s the LAST restaurant with food during a zombie apocalypse! I honestly don’t know how this place stays open.

Decent spot, actually cooks a steak rare when you ask. Service was fine, as was food, if you are in the mood for a midrange steakhouse you can definitely do worse.

A personal fav! I love this place! I’m a big time meat eater and you don’t mess with a girl and her meat! The pork chops are insane! You know, come to think of it, I may have a personal food war with libertine’s bacon chop and the double chop here. Oh dear lord, it’s so good! Also, I really like the buddy bowl, it’s rice, beans, brisket, cheese and your choice of protein topper. I usually get the shrimp and it’s grilled and has a great smoke to it. It’s not all buttery and sautéed.(I’m not a fan of shrimp that way, kudos to you that do!) they also have quite a bit of parking and the bar is great! Great service, everything here is spot on! It’s totally and old fashioned place and I always feel like a mobster here. I love it!

This place has fantastic food at a very reasonable price. We went for my husbands birthday and was very surprised at the flavored they used. I would recommend the onion rings as an appetizer. They are unlike any onion ring that I have ever tasted, but simply fantastic.

Went here for their Sunday brunch and enjoyed it. We ordered two orders of the Big Easy and an order of the baked French toast. The Big Easy(2 eggs, Cajun or plain hash browns and corn bread-$ 6), I got my Cajun hash browns were pretty good and the corn bread was okay at best. The real hit for me was the baked French toast($ 8)!!! So amazing. Next time I’ll just order that(maybe 2 orders!!). The food was rich and I definitely had a food baby for while after. The décor was cute, definitely had that old school supper club feel. It was pretty empty on Sunday morning so can’t comment of the atmosphere. I won’t be running back for brunch immediately as I think there are other places in the North Loop I’d like to try.

Great food. I had the Spaulding steak cooked to perfection with the hash browns on the side and it was one of the best steaks I have had. We also had the pig wings and calamari and each were wonderful. Really great steakhouse with some carb heavy favorites.

Very solid seafood and meat place. The standouts are the apps and drinks. Loved their Bloody Mary and of course the Buddy Bowl. Great cheesy bread. Tasty crab cake and very good scallops. Pork chop was tender and juicy.

Went here on the recommendation of a friend before a Twins game as it is in walking distance of Target Field. Do your self a favor, order the Pork Chop. I swear to you it will be one of, if not the best you have ever had. Service was great, well trained staff. And, for dessert, have the grilled bananas.

The server Janae was absolutely wonderful. Funny, attentive, great suggestions, and made you feel right at home. Food was a little pricey. Pork chop was undercooked so that was slightly unpalatable. Drinks were great.

Have not been in Minneapolis for 20 years. Driving around to find a place to eat downtown is always painful specially when we are talking about parking. I came across JD Hoyt’s on a very lucky traffic light that turned red. Place is for all tastes and weather. You can choose in between the inside bar or outside seating. The most important is the food. Not your regular predictable Mortons or any other steakhouse chain. Staff is great and the only thing they could improve is their appetizer list. That’s the only predictable item in this place. Nice surprise.

Went here again for a special dinner. The pork chops were just as delicious. We also had an order of the cajun hashbrowns — they were good but a bit on the salty side. The best part though was dessert. For a birthday they gave us a strawberry shortcake, which from what I could tell, was made with warm cornbread instead of a shortcake.(can anyone confirm this?) OHMYGOD. My life has been changed — it was amazing. I will forever eat strawberry shortcake with cornbread. We also had some ice cream that was amazing(I believe it was Sebastian Joes?) — SOGOOD. Also — the garlic bread. No one has ever asked us if we wanted more bread(even as a party of 6 after we plowed through it.) I don’t know if it’s an «endless» kind of thing or if you get what you get, but I’d love to know because its definitely never enough!

This is definitely a great steak house, and a perfect place to bring a date! Valet parking is very convenient and rather inexpensive too! The menu is huge with seafood, steaks, pasta’s, and burgers. The Buddy Bowl if fantastic, almost like a Jambalya. Totally sharable and a must have starter! The Shrimp Cocktail should be named the Lobster Cocktail, the shrimp are huge! I ordered the double pork chops. They came out perfectly medium well and very thick and juicy. The Lobster Risotto side dish had so much lobster meat, it was like I had a whole lobster as a side. Be sure to leave room for Dessert. The restaurant has Family Style desserts, giant portions to serve four to six people! The bread pudding is also delicious.

Carnivores rejoice! Granted, I am not a carnivore therefore my thoughts on the meat meal are limited to what my boyfriend says BUT here goes nothin… The BF and I went out on a Friday night for a belated birthday meal. We were lucky enough to find a parking spot right outside of The Vu(located two doors down) and paid $ 2 for parking. When we walked in my first thought was ‘faaaanncccyyyy’ and the grin on my man’s face led me to believe he was feelin’ the ambiance as well. The part of the room where we sat had a GIANT crocodile hanging and shark hanging made from odds n ends(high heel, belts, wheelbarrow, oh my!). Right away we were seated and I got a glass of wine while he got a rum and coke. Our waitress’ name was Lauren(shout out) and she was fabulous! Super attentive and friendly throughout the night. Food: The World Famous cheese bread is more like Street Famous. Nothing to freak out about. We got two baskets because duh, cheeeese. But wouldn’t recommend it. I also got a house salad(Parmesan peppercorn dressing was delicious!). For the main course, my boyfriend decided on the 32 oz. prime rib, mixed veggies and garlic mashed potatoes. Me: I need a quote from you. Him: It was a lot of food. Me: Taste? Him: What? Me: Taste. Him: It was good.(Don’t let his lack of adjective use sway you… he didn’t speak during the entire time he ate it and kept smiling in between bites). I got the black bean burger with cheddar, avocado and lettuce on top with coleslaw and mixed fruit on the side. The coleslaw I could have done without BUTTHEBLACKBEANBURGERWASAWESOME!!! First of all, it was the size of my face. I could eat one every single day. At the end of our meal we got a free mini sundae(for birthdays you can choose between strawberry shortcake or ice cream). My man chose cookies n cream and it was a great way to end our night! Overall, this place was pretty sweeet. Will DEFINATELY go back, but skip the cheese bread.

Old school cool… that is what describes J.D. Hoyt’s. I love the décor, especially the bar area. If I lived here I could see myself anchoring down at the bar and enjoying a manhattan or two. The staff here is what you would expect from this type of an establishment, professional and they all know their stuff. We started with the Buddy Bowl and it was outstanding. The catfish was absolutely delicious. Seriously, this was like a meal in itself. I ended up getting the Pork Chops, being a newbie here everyone recommended I go this route. I always end up getting a steak when going out to a place like J.D. Hoyt’s so why not get something they are really known for. I was not disappointed. It was cooked perfectly and the taste was exquisite. We ended up getting a couple of sides too, but I didn’t have much room after everything else. Rest assured they were tasty too. They also have a very smart wine list. Nothing huge, but a lot of great selections and I found the prices here too very fair. J.D. Hoyt’s is wonderful. I can’t wait to try out more of the menu and belly up to the bar on my next visit to Minneapolis.

Give me a old school supper club any day of the week! Dinner and drinks… Check!!! We had a couple drinks before dinner and let’s just say you definitely get a well poured cocktail! You now have my attention and I’m happy! We had the famous Buddy Bowl and wowza is what I will share with you! The catfish was excellent! We decided on a bottle of Hall Cabernet and the extra star goes for the excellent value of this wine. $ 60? I thought it was a typo! This place is known for the pork chops and honestly they are that good! We also had the BBQ ribs and I was also impressed! The portions are huge! I also think they are fairly priced! I have been going here for years and still love it… It’s smack dab in the middle of the Minneapolis Red light district. It has been cleaned up but still don’t let that scare you! It’s awesome! Cheers!

I waited way too long to come here! Came here for the first time earlier in the year and I’ve been dying to come back. Finally made it back on a recent Saturday night. We started off our first visit by sharing the relish tray, since he likes relish trays and even makes them when we have guests. The relish tray had veggies, dill dip, pickled veggies and some potato salad. Great choice! I’m not much of a meat eater, so my default at most places is a chop. My first trip I wasn’t sure if I’d like the chops(um, what?), so I got one chop and the chicken. Big mistake! Chicken was good, but the chops are top notch! Great the night of and great the next day — cold or reheated. After that, I told myself, next time 2 pork chops. Most recent trip, we started out with the potato crisps, which came with seasoned sour cream. The basket is gigantic and they are truly addicting. Thin, crispy and great seasoning. I ordered 2 chops and the au gratin potatoes, my husband was going to order the prime rib like his other visits, but he was tempted by the bone in rib-eye, which was served with scalloped potatoes, deep fried asparagus and onion straws. JD Hoyt’s should consider adding the asparagus to the menu as regular item. Uh, so good. After we polished off that basket of chips we were getting full, but that wasn’t going to stop us. The au gratins were excellent — cheesy with little cubes of potatoes and a nice crusty top. As I was eating my chop I kept thinking, why don’t we come here more often? Then I remembered why — I can’t eat like this all the time. Although I’d love to. Great food, excellent service, delicious Pink Lady cocktail make for a nice evening. This place is quickly becoming my favorite place to eat!
