Uncommon Gardens may be expensive, but they really are good at providing unique options. Every time I’ve gone I’ve seen items that I didn’t even know existed in nature and apparently Bachman’s doesn’t actually have everything. Succulents are trendy right now(if plants can be considered trendy) and when I was looking over the summer they had more than just greens and purples but reds which I thought were only in photoshopped Pinterest pictures. Very cool. This week I was looking for some pumpkins and colorful squash and they had more colors, shapes and sizes than I had ever seen. A green pumpkin? Who knew! I wouldn’t suggest it if you are looking for the basics, but for something, well, uncommon it is definitely the right price for the wow factor it will bring.

Friendly people in a much more intimate setting than the mega garden store just around the corner. Lots of interesting flowers pack to your garden full of color. We found several unique items for this year’s planting.

There are two seasons for me — Cold and Garden Time. Yeah, I guess there ARE only two seasons in Minnesota… mine just have different names. When Garden Time comes, if I’m not sitting inside praising the blessing also known as central air, my ass is outside digging up weeds and planting flowers. Annuals, perennials, vegetables, shrubs… as long as I have a place for it, I’m planting it. My goal is to not actually have any usuable space in my backyard, deck included. I’m almost there. Anyway, Uncommon Gardens is a few blocks from my house which is also a few blocks from Bachman’s. I’ll admit to really only shopping at Bachman’s and here’s why… Uncommon Gardens is EXPENSIVE. I know what a plant is worth, so charging $ 5 for a small pack of impatients is pretty bullshit. $ 12 for a tiny perenniaI groundcover can also be included in that statement. I know that they are small and locally owned, but I have never walked out of here spending less than $ 70. I know I’m the one choosing to shop here so it’s my own fault… I’m just internet complaining behind their backs. IT’S WHAT I DO. I also think I’ve had one actual conversation with an employee. I always get the feeling that they’d rather not be there, but I’ve also felt that way about any job I’ve ever had so I’m not going to hold that against them. Besides, they aren’t able to bow down to the central air gods while they’re there. Sucks.
