Backwater Angler

I went in to the fly shop after just moving to the State and having heard about the Gunpowder river being close enough for me to fish in the evenings after work. The store owner took the time to go over the fly’s that have been working well as well as pointing out spots on the map that they recommend to fish given the current conditions as well as reports for the fisherman out on the river concerning were people were swimming. As I was finishing up my perches of the licenses and a few of the fly’s that were doing well the owner asked about the wading boots that I had with me and when he found out that I had felt soled he kindly informed me that they were not allowed in the stat of Md and offered me a loaner pair of boots for the day. I cannot tell you how happy I was with the customer service of the Backwater Angler fly shop, it is good to know that there are still a few people out there that are willing to take the time to pass on good information and not just worried about the bottom line!!!

As a newcomer to fly fishing but a lifelong angler I found Theaux and Backwater Angler to be welcoming and informative. Theaux not only gave me a great price on a package but walked me through flies that were current, some techniques and even supplied me with some ideas on where to fish.
After 6 months, he still remembered my name, the rod and reel i purchased, my occupation and welcomed me back to the store after a long absence.
He is a warrior for the health of our waterways and an incredibly kind and knowledgeable spokesman for fly fishing and waterman kind.
I look forward to being a lifelong customer. Next week I purchase my salt water fly fishing rig.

The Backwater Angler is a great resource. Non-​pretentious, super friendly and super super helpful. I talked to Carl for a bit and he had a lot of (solicited) advice for me. He told a few fish tales (I tend to believe him though). They have a decent selection of fly fishing gear. Their flies in stock were a little low, but that’s a good thing right?
I highly recommend stopping in here for tips before you hit the Gunpowder river to catch some fish. I’ve been back there a few times since the first time, and I won’t go fishing up there without stopping here first.
