This used to be our go to place for affordable good Chinese take out. Unfortunately this order tonight will be our last. The delivery time was estimated at 30 min and the food came after I called to inquire about it after 1hour of waiting. Also, our order of cold sesame noodles came as overcooked noodles with NO peanut sesame sauce on it! Just plain, dry noodles! This has never happened before. I did notice that a different man was taking orders today. He even charged me to replace white rice with brown rice– something they never did before. Orange chicken and dumplings were still okay. I can only assume that there has been change in management. Today’s mess ups was enough to lose us as regular customers. Very disappointing. Will stick to TS Ma from now on.

Stay away! When we first moved to Montclair in 1998 we found this place and it quickly became our go-to Chinese takeout restaurant. At a time we probably ordered from there once a week. Family and friends who moved away from the NYC area and found lackluster takeout in their new environs would long for food from China Royal when they would visit. We once went to order and there was no answer when we called. We tried the following day and the same thing happened. Took a drive past and the place was closed. We feared that they had closed for good. A week later the restaurant called us! They saw our number in the caller ID and called to tell us they were on vacation and should have informed their customers. That’s the sort of place this was! Note that I say«was.» One day we noticed the food quality had gone down. Maybe just a bad day. But it kept up. The quality went downhill. Then the service vanished. We would get the wrong food and then one night after waiting an hour for food we decided something was wrong. We live within walking distance so I decided to go over there. I’d learn(from another patron mind you) that the previous owners had sold the business and moved out of state. The new owners kept the name and kept the restaurant as though nothing had happened. They were literally doing business off what was a reputable name. The woman behind the counter laughed when I complained that I had waited over an hour for food that essentially was uneatable. She thought I was joking when I demanded some money back. And thought my threat to never order from there again was baseless. My family has since found a much better place. Still it’s not the China Royal of old, but it is good. I put this review out there so any of those who once were loyal patrons of China Royal know what happened and so people don’t go back. The new ownership has no right to run something that was quality into the ground. Oh and I gave the place one star and that’s only because Unilocal wouldn’t let me post the review without giving it a star. In my opinion the place gets no stars.

I ordered the dumpling, chow fun, sesame chicken. The quality is not authentic and the dishes have lots of sugar, thick pastry and little filings. They wrote the wrong address and I waited for more than an hour. They also called back after 20 mins saying they have no shrimp today. It must be bad luck. I won’t order in this take out again. Better go for Thai, at least less sugary and greasy.

Probably the best Chinese take out food I’ve had. Great price and great food. Not salty and flavorful. Nice touch with the free soda. I’m a fan. Delivery took more than an hour but it was during the aftermath of hurricane sandy.

Excellent cheap excellent quality Chinese food! The kitchen looks clean, food was delicious. The lady behind the counter smiled at all the customers. Not overly salty or oily. I was just driving by looking for dinner and I was very pleasantly surprised! Definitely a gem.

Cheap, yummy Chinese take-out. I’m not expecting anything fancy or complicated with this place. The people that work here are really nice and know us on sight when we walk in. Their veggie lo mein and egg rolls are my guilty pleasure. They have online ordering now, which is awesome. PLUS we adopted a stray kitten that we found outside their door one night. So not only do I get amazing cheap noodles, but I also got my furry child from this place. Thanks, China Royal!

My favorite chinese delivery. Fast consistent with all our favorites. Just ordered fried dumplings, egg drop soup, and chicken fried rice. Arrived in under 30 minutes as promised

I went here some time ago and it was drastically disappointing. Taste was awful for the price. Don’t bother.

This is the type of Chinese food restaurant that throws a free sprite in the bag with your delivery order. Pretty good food too; not to expensive.

Great for cheap, quick, HOT Chinese food. Litmus tested with Tso’s and Chicken/Broccoli, and both met expectations– key being sauce is flavorful and not gooey and chicken is moist and not dry. Swapped egg roll with Wonton Soup– a great call, it was delicious.

I moved to Montclair over a year ago and have been looking for good Chinese takeout since then. I tried Sesame and while the food is good it is a bit overpriced. The General Tso’s white meat costs about $ 19 if you ask for extra broccoli and they never really add it anyway. To get an additional side order of broccoli costs another $ 12-$ 13. HA! Tried a couple of other Chinese restaurants in the area and was not too satisfied for one reason or another. Finally I read about China Royal here on Unilocal and I tried it for the first time a few nights ago. I was pretty satisfied. I stuck with the classics, chicken and broccoli and shrimp fried rice. I was a little worried when my tab amounted to only $ 10. Nevertheless I got the food home and enjoyed it. The broccoli was crunchy and the shrimp fried rice had a good taste to it though only a few shrimp and they were very small. But what can you expect at that price. The food was not at all greasy and I even had leftovers for the next night. While I would still use Sesame sometimes, it is nice to know that there is a place where I can get decent Chinese food when I don’t want to spend $ 20-$ 35 per meal.

After trying 4 places attemtping to get delivery, we finally got a bite here. the delivery time was quoted at 30 min and was delivered within that window. Prices were pretty reasonable. I got the boneless spare ribs, general tso’s chicken, and white rice. All were very good. portions were pretty good. The general tso’s sauce as kind of ketchupy, and the chicken looked different that I am used to. The peices of chicken are ballish. I don’t know how i would even describe the shape I am used to, but they werent like this. Not that it was bad, just different. Maybe a little too much breading for my taste. Also, i guess we got a bunch of food(5 of us ordering) and without asking they threw in 3 sodas and one of the big crunchy things with a coleslaw kind of thing inside. No fortune cookies or crispy noodles though. I would have foregone the sodas etc for cookies and noodles. Overall, i would order again in a pinch, but they will not serve as my go-to chinese food place.

We’ve been ordering Chinese takeout from China Royal for ten years. It’s our go to take out place in Montclair. It’s located in a little hole in the wall on Bloomfield Avenue that looks like a dive, but the food is the best in the area. Plus, they are always willing to tailor the food to your desire. It’s also definitely the most reasonable Chinese takeout in the area — Montclair is crazily over priced but China Royal is not at all bad. Also, they take credit cards over the phone, which is really useful for me since I never carry cash. Lately my favorite is Chicken with Peanuts and my husband is a huge fan of the sweet and sour chicken, which is oily, but less oily than most places I’ve ordered from. We both love the steamed dumplings with pork and I love the dumplings with veggies. The best part about them is that they deliver so fast! Usually half an hour or even less!

China Royal is a typical Chinese takeout place located on a busy street with almost no parking around. I’ve almost always ordered takeout from them with delivery arriving within half an hour in most cases. I’ve seen the food being prepared a few times and the cook seems to pay close attention to the cooking. The food is never oily or over sauced and is simply prepared.
