I’ve only had Crockett’s about 3 times in my life, and it was always tasty. Years ago, it would tear up my stomach every time. I assumed the oil was old. I had some today and everything was on point. I ordered the catfish dinner with Mac and cheese and candied yams. The Mac and cheese was ok. I think someone new makes it because it was better before, but still good. The yams were great! Tasted like my grandmother’s in North Carolina. The catfish was perfectly fried and seasoned well. Not too greasy or oily. I ordered a side of hush puppies, since I saw great reviews on those and they were crisp and sweet. A lot of onions too, which I like. I’d definitely go here again, if the service and food was like today.

Came here after raves & reviews from my friend and all the good reviews I seen on this page. PSA: I was bamboozled! Ordered the Tilapia dinner which came with 2 slices of dry wheat bread, Mac n cheese and steak fries. Maybe I just had high expectations but I was disappointed. The fish had no flavor, whatsoever. Not even any salt. Very well fried, but tasteless. I figured maybe it was because I got Tilapia, but I tried her fried whiting with the same results. Unfortunately I don’t plan on going back. I would recommend they add some Seasoning to that batter they fry everything with and they actually may have something here(Old Bay does WONDERS!)

I was looking for a good Fish Fry in NJ after unsuccessfully finding any in NJ. I decided to just Unilocal Fish Fry and I found this spot. Me and my wife were like, let’s give it a try. We arrived and notice the place was crowded and hey maybe thats a good thing. We ordered a whiting dinner and catfish dinner. Although it took time to get, they cook the food to order so quality took time… and it was worth the time we waited. The fish was so fresh and not greasy at all. The dinners each came with 2 sides and the greens and mac-n-cheese were delicious. Very filing and satisfying. We will be back for sure!

I am a suburban transplant. I longingly remember fish fry from my youth… crispy flaky whitting piled high on plain white bread… so hot from the oil that it toasted the bread on contact. I had given up hope of ever finding one again… until today! I just happened to be passing through Montclair and saw Crockets. The look is just like I remember from these places… simple…direct…to the point. Fried fish and seafood. Cash only. I figured it can’t possible be worse than the highfalutin filet of fish I get served in the burbs. Service at the counter was quick and efficient. No nonsense here. We ordered the Whiting and the Flounder. Yes. This is it. I almost fell to the floor into a fetal position as I regressed to the comfort of my youth. The fish was perfectly fried to a light crispness and seasoned lightly. The paper around the sandwich was a grease ball. but I suppose that was the point as the fish was not greasy at all! The tartar sauce was very mild and u think is homemade. It was the perfect condiment although thus fish can certainly stand on its own. I’m a fan and will be back!

Really good fresh fish and seafood but everything is fried. I would love to see Crockets expand their menu. I enjoyed the greens as well. Not too salty or greasy. However collard greens is their only option for veggies. Again expanding their menu just a little is my first recommendation. Second, The cash only is an inconvenience to many. I’m not sure why some businesses rather accept cash then credit. Some sprucing up in the bathroom area would be nice as well. Not the bathroom itself but the pathway/area leading to the bathroom. Other than these very important things, the scallops are the most flavorful and moist scallops I have ever eaten in my life. Not forgetting the service, staff, and quality as well as the quantity of the food is very satisfying.

The other reviews are correct: the fish is on point. Casual dining establishment away from the main Bloomfield Ave restaurant drag, but worth a visit especially if you’re in the mood for take-out. If you need to dine-in, however, there is seating and a large TV that was playing a nice Josh Groban DVD at the time I visited. Two entrees came out to $ 30 for dinner so I may not visit as often as I’d like, but it’s worth it if you have a deep craving for good fried fish. Seems like the sandwiches are a much more affordable option for those on a college student budget or mentality. At checkout the cashier incorrectly told me I owed them just $ 8, and against my id’s desires the superego took over and told him he was wrong. Darn. :) Still worth it to know that there is a place like this close to my home.

Ok this is the honest truth about Crockets fish fry. The fish is fresher than you could hope for. The Cat fish is amazing the fried shrimp are banging some sides are better than others my son & I get the Mac n cheese which is very nice collard greens are very good sweet potato pie is delicious. Bottom line great fried fish always consistent which very important to me. Give crockets a try you will be happy you did. One more thing I almost forgot to mention crockets is a family run restaurant & these folks are super nice & aim to please.

Last Saturday was my first visit to Crocketts. I ordered the scallops and OMG! They were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Each scallop was a burst a buttery flavor in my mouth. I definitely will return to try more items on the menu.

I recently visited Crockett’s(not my first time) on a Friday night around 9 p.m. I always make a point to call in my order first because I do not like waiting and I don’t want to smell like I just battered my own fish. The young lady was eager to take my order and at the end of the order she replied«Is that it». I guess there so use to folks ordering grocery lists worth of food… But not me… I know what I want and that’s a classic fish sandwich(whiting). Sorry but I’m not a fan of the side orders… However, the hush puppies are Delicious… Upon arrival, there were a couple of people waiting, I gave them my name and bam… My order was ready $ 7.99 plus tax… Happy olé me returned home and devoured my fish sandwich… Of course I will return…

Crockett’s is your typical fried fish joint. I must say the fish is fresh and always crispy. Some sides are better than others. Their vegetables could do with a little more seasoning and/or smoked meat. Do yourself a favor and pass on the mac & cheese. You’re also better off making your tartar sauce at home if taking your order to-go. They do however, make an awesome peach cobbler. FYI, it’s cash only but there’s an ATM inside.

Really 3.5 stars. Service is great. They’re very efficient. I had the crab cakes and they were crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. The mac and cheese wasn’t the greatest but it did the job. My friend had the whiting and fries. She said the fish was nice and crispy and fluffy and wasn’t greasy at all but it lacked salt or seasoning. Her fries were also very soggy. I would visit again. The service bumps them to the 4th star.

I googled«Fried Catfish» and Crockett’s Fish Fry came up. I set the GPS from Clifton and off I went. I was on a mission. I called to confirm they had what my stomach craved and they did indeed. With order made(Fried Catfish dinner w/collards and Mac/Cheese and a order of hush puppies), I set off to meet Crockett’s Fish Fry. This was a lot closer than going home to Virginia and I needed a southern fix. It was easy to find on the main drag there on Bloomfield Ave. Parking is a bit rough but not a problem overall. I popped in, my order was waiting perfectly and off I went back home to enjoy my goodies. The catfish was fantastic, collards perfectly seasons and tender, the hush puppies were perfect. The mac/cheese could use a kick of something but it was still better than anything outside of your own kitchen and we all have our favorite mac/cheese recipe so that is a very subjective dish to make for others. All is all, well worth the trip from Clifton, NJ and I will return again and again looking forward to working my way through the menu item by item. I will see you there!

I liked it! We ordered the shrimp dinner with fries & collards and a catfish sandwich. The expression«sandwich» is a bit odd in that you are given a plate with your choice of fish, two pieces of sliced bread, and some tartar sauce… sort of a «make it yourself», without the normal accompaniment of lettuce, tomato and, perhaps, pickles. On the flip side, the plate contained three nice pieces of tasty and well fried catfish… nice! The shrimp were fine and probably about all you could expect, given the distance from the Gulf. Steak fries were also fine and the collards were spot on!!! There was a breakdown on the order fulfillment, but corrected quickly with no fallout. The staff here seemed nice, including the customers, many of whom appeared to be long-tenured devotees. I’ll be back.

One of the best fish fry places that is not in your home. The porgies are my favorite I love the texture of all the fish here nice and crunchy. The potato salad is really good and the mac & cheese. The sides are ok not the greatest but they will do. I also loved the flounder and the shrimp and don’t forget the hush puppies. You have to wait for the food but it is definitely worth it.

I’m not being hyperbolic when I say that the food at Crockett’s is so good it almost makes me cry. Because it almost did. Now, granted, I have not tried everything on their menu, but what I’ve had has been nothing but perfect. The candied yams are sweet. The macaroni and cheese is indulgent in the best way possible. The collard greens are everything you’d ever want from them. The french fries are crunchy and hefty. I’ve never had better hush puppies in my entire life. And the fish! I can’t even begin to describe how perfect it is. So just trust me. In addition to the food, every employee there is incredibly nice and welcoming, which just makes an amazing place even better Go to Crockett’s and enjoy. And it’s really that simple.

I’m a southern girl and had a craving for seafood today. I went into Crockett’s because I heard they served the best fish in town. I opted for the oysters and hushpuppies. Absolutely delicious and the hushpuppies are addictive!

I absolutely love Crockett’s. Whenever I’m in Montclair, I must go. Their fried fish is seasoned to perfection! The side dishes are also okay, but I’ve had better elsewhere. On a busy day, you’ll be waiting at least 10 mins to get your food, but it’s well worth the wait fo’ dat fish.

Fish Fry, Fried Fish with a blend of Caribbean twist. It’s a decent place. It has a home kitchen cooked food vibe to it, and it seems to be family run, so there’s passion in what they make. So far impressed. They had lots of regular customers and the are very friendly. We feel at ease here, and do not feel rushed not delayed. We recommend this place. Cheers
