I haven’t been to King’s Bakery actual location, but I’ve been buying their bread for many years. Their Royal Toast is beyond comparison, the best sandwich bread on the market. Perfectly shaped, not squished like some loaves are. Very attractive. It’s not pre toasted as the name implies, but you toast it yourself. I buy it at Shun Fat Market on Atlantic in my hometown of Monterey Park. I’ve asked Ralph’s why they don’t carry it, but they don’t even know what I’m talking about. So I keep going to Shun Fat just for the bread. They also make a red bean toast, which is slightly taller than the Royal Toast, and has a dark bean swirl in the middle. And a raisin toast. But the plain Royal Toast is my favorite.

Tiny casual shop inside HK supermarket. Perfect for last weekend’s individually-packed mooncakes pickup. Offers the usual Asian breads, cakes, and other baked goods to-go. Takes credit cards.

Ok… did I accidentally pick up the week old bread or something? This place was nothing short of FOUL. I came by here on my last Monterey Park adventure, looking for some Chinese pastries. I was looking for a different bakery, but had accidentally made a wrong turn, and my boyfriend suggested I run into this supermarket and see if they had a bakery section. I was thrilled to see an assortment of buns and cakes, so I grabbed some sponge cakes, an egg tart, and a pineapple bun. I think the whole lot was about $ 4.50. I excitedly returned to my car, pastries in hand. The egg tart was immediately consumed, and wasn’t that bad. but it wasn’t that great either. Sort of sloppy and under cooked. The pineapple bun was pretty gross though: hard as a rock, extremely dry, and barely any sweetness or crumble to the topping. And the sponge cake? Dry, with a terrible chemical aftertaste. I really can’t think of any good use for these pastries, except maybe giving yourself cancer or poisoning someone you hate. After about two bites of each, they all went into the trash. What a bust!

Prices are comparable to other bakeries. After just about a week of refrigerating my buns at school, the buns are still soft and moist. Yummy. I’ll do a future review if I ever get the chance to taste the bread fresh out the oven!

This is a great Asian bakery! Everything is reasonably priced and the size of the breads are far bigger and tastier than other asian bakeries. And its conveniently located next to the supermarket. Oh yea, their birthday cakes are pretty good as well!
