We stayed at the Capital Hotel adjacent to the restaurant. I travel frequently and the last place I eat is a hotel restaurant. I cannot say enough about this place From the friendly staff to the ambiance to the food The house sad is to die for I had the small filet and my dinner companion had the Ny strip both were delicious I highly recommend J Morgan’s

Ok so to preface this I will say the food was absolutely excellent. I had the Lobster Benedict and it was phenomenal. The portion was perfect and the price was perfect as well. The issue I had however was the minimal amount of hollandaise. I called the day before and I was informed that they stopped serving hollandaise at 10:30 so I made sure that my reservation was before hand so that I could be under the radar. I got my food around 10 and proceeded to tuck in. The amount of hollandaise sauce was lacking on my entrée as well as of the entrees of my dining companions who had the same dish. We asked our waiter and he informed us that they had no more hollandaise and that they stopped making it at 10. At 11 o’clock we watched another table get served hollandaise on the same dish I ordered! THATISUNACCEPTABLE. When we told him about the fact that there was so little hollandaise he very rudely replied that it looked like there was plenty to him. For the rest of the stay he was consistently snarky and seemed consistently inconvenienced to be there. I heard such great things about the service but I guess I got the bad egg. Either way the food was delicious.

Great menu, something for everyone. We are regulars here. Great atmosphere and the food is always fabulous. Haven’t tried anything i haven’t liked. Portions are plentiful and desserts are huge(my fav place to come for birthdays and celebrations because of the desserts)! My fav meal is the lobster mac and cheese. They take reservations too. You won’t be disappointed.

We ate here twice during the week, since it was downstairs from our Hotel. Also had breakfast here several mornings but I only had oatmeal but my friend’s breakfasts looked great. I had a bone-in rib eye one night and a New York Strip another. Meat was great and perfectly cooked rare. Had the house salad one night and the Caesar salad the other visit. Both were good but the star was the loaf of bread covered with garlic, butter and Parmesan cheese. Had a bite of Pecan pie one night and a bite of a peanut/chocolate pie the other. Also seafood and other menu choices, but all of us had beef. Has to be the best steakhouse in town.

Steak overcooked. Ordered medium rare, came well done. Mistakes happen, called the waiter. He said they middle was medium rare. The middle? I told them would eat it to be peaceful. Got further into it(1 more bite) and it was shoe leather. Called manager. He wanted to teach me how steaks are cooked. After 20 years of consulting dinners, I think I know how a steak can be cooked. I sent it back. They said nothing. DONOTEATHERE. Sarduccis is better.

We went here with our two kids last Sunday night and waiting at least an hour for our food. The kids were starving and practically falling asleep at the table. When the food did come, my steak was over-cooked. It was too late to send it back so the waiter apologized and told me to eat it and he would take care of it. I also said I was really displeased with the wait time and he said he would talk to the manger and get something for us. When the bill came my steak was discounted(not taken off) and there was nothing to make up for the wait time. When I talked to the manager he reluctantly took the steak off but said he could do nothing for the wait time — they were busy and it wasn’t their fault. He then offered a gift card but we were from out of town so it wouldn’t do us any good. I was appalled at how rude the waiter was — not even a glass of wine while we were waiting!

Phenomenal food, great service, great company. Just tasty and delicious and well prepared with the little details throwing the caliber over the edge, instead of detracting from it. In our party, we had a cowboy steak, a rib eye steak, and the duck with the pomegranate glaze. All were amazing. Had the crabcake for an app — kinda dry but tasty, and had a side of the lobster and mac and cheese — yummy enough to eat the leftovers later that night! Only downside, some doofuses at the next table, some 40+yr old men trying to seduce some 20+ year old women, and the talk was rude and profane and very loud — and I’m a pretty tolerant woman!!! So, if this food can still shine in the face of those jerks, it says a lot about the food. And kudos to the waitress for her patience with them — they behaved poorly and she was very classy.

I was really excited for my first time eating at J. Morgan’s, but I came away disappointed. The bill was just over $ 100 for two people, which would have been okay if the experience was what I was expecting! Off the bat we were seated at a rather cramped table. Then, the server had no wine pairings for our meals.(Is that asking too much?) The restaurant was full so the service was slow, but on the bright side the ticket times were not bad. The garlic parmesan bread they started us with was delicious, as was the small serving of lobster mac and cheese we split. But then my Blackened Cajun Scallops came out with only four«jumbo» scallops and some very sad boiled vegetables, while my boyfriend’s New York had a large piece of grizzle in it. As for dessert, the portion was far too large and the price too high. As someone who has worked in the service industry I am generally forgiving, but for that kind of money and status J. Morgan’s should be nailing every meal. I am not sure yet if I will give them another chance.

I guess I’m spoiled living in a foodie city with two excellent steak houses. This is not one. The food is too inconsistent… I’ve had decent meals here… the fillet in the past was decent and a good price v value. Last nights meal was not good. Some of my issues… The seafood is not fresh. The shrimp cocktail is bountiful… but I can tell it is previously frozen. I recognize sourcing in Vermont makes fresh fish difficult. That said, the shrimp are large… but the appetizer is dated looking… resembling an 80’s like cocktail… with sesame toast and standard cocktail sauce… not much imagination. The Caesar salad should be scratch made and served at a decent steak house… this was not… The garlic bread is good… a bit heavily oiled and buttered… but it was a table hit. My prime rib was anything but prime… nor was it angus quality… it was decently portioned… but poor quality… it was tough, chewy, and probably choice grade… which just shouldn’t be the case at a decent steak house… charge more and have better quality. They have a decent wine list… with some fairly well priced reserve wines. Couple nit picks… a good steak house should have great steak fries… these are shoestring type… which is just poor… and they are no better than supermarket quality… the sides should be much better… again dated 80’s type sides with little imagination. Overall…I go here because my parents love the place and know the waiter… who does a decent job… but if you are used to a real steak house with prime or artisan aged angus beef… you will be disappointed. It’s just not at that level.

Wonderful dinner out with coworkers! The restaurant was very accommodating and understanding about the change in number of our reservation. They cakes the day if to confirm numbers and move us to a better suited table! Our server Caroline was stellar, helped with the specials and suggested drinks(thanks to the amazing bartender Rid, the drinks were delicious — $ 3 margaritas that night!) and dessert choices. Love her! Great teriyaki steak and Fred’s calamari!!!‘n

J Morgan’s is all in all a good restaurant with a convent city-center hotel location, great décor, and friendly service. Recent trips to Montpelier have found me dining at J Morgan’s. Most of my experiences have been for dinner. I’ve had the burger several times and found that if you prefer a true medium, you need to order a medium rare. The toppings are fresh as are the buns, albeit a bit dry. The burger is a good size and tasty. Let’s talk about fries though… They offer both regular fries as well as sweet potato fries with many of their dishes — both however are shoestring cut. No steakhouse, in my opinion, should ever serve shoestring fries. The burgers 4 stars… The fries 1 star. The bar environment isn’t always the most welcoming to travelers. Many locals frequent the bar, which is usually a good sign, but the bar staff pay much more attention to them then they do travelers. Bar 3 stars. I had their turkey club sandwich on one occasion… It’s amazing and definitely worth getting. The turkey is flavorful and tender, piled high on toasted bread in the typical club sandwich style with all the appropriate accompaniments. This is a 5 star sandwich… Too bad it comes with shoe string fries! J Morgan’s is known for its strawberry cake. I ordered this once to see what the hype was about… And was sadly disappointed. They have great intentions with this cake. It starts off with a nice cake base but is destroyed by an overly sweet strawberry flavored filling. Not for me… 2 stars. I had my reservations trying J Morgan’s for breakfast. Hotel restaurants, no matter how nice, churn out breakfast as a matter of necessity, and usually in an unremarkable fashion. The menu has the usual breakfast fare, but I was shocked at how low the prices were. Despite my doctor’s best intentions, I ordered the J Morgan which includes three eggs cooked to your preference, two pancakes or French toast, bacon or sausage, and house potatoes… All for 9 dollars!!! My hometown diner can’t even touch that price! The pancakes were fluffy and flavorful, eggs reasonably well cooked(I ordered mine sunny side up), and the bacon was wonderfully smokey. The potatoes, which I usually pay little attention to, were seasoned and cooked to perfection. It was more than I could eat. With quality and price… And Sinatra playing in the background… 5 stars for breakfast.

The service was really good. The server was attentive and pleasant. We both had Rib-eyes, which were perfectly cooked. The sides were pretty bad, just overcooked and poorly seasoned. My main complaint was the booth we got. It was so small there wasn’t room to put the wine list or the giant menus they have. We had to contort our legs just to get into it. It didn’t look like there were any better places for a couple to sit either. The ambiance of the place is pretty hokey. It seems like something out of an 80’s mafia movie.

I went here while on vacation in VT. The service was decent and the food was excellent. Let’s start with the food: they provide you with a nice cheesy, garlic bread that is probably the BEST thing I’ve ever eaten. Honestly, I couldn’t get enough of it. I’m pretty sure I ate 2⁄3 of it, even though I was sitting with 2 other people. For my entrée, I had their rack of lamb. The meat was cooked perfectly, and the sides were delicious and very well prepared. Now, the reason for 3 starts is because of their rules for sides. We sat down with a party of 3, because one of my friends was too tired to come out to dinner. My sister ended up ordering him the mac and cheese side to go. That was no problem. However, he woke up from his nap and showed up about halfway through our meal. Since we already ordered the side for him, we thought it’d be fine as they would just need to bring it out on a plate rather than a to-go box. However, once the waitress found out that another person was joining, she stated that he couldn’t get the mac and cheese side, because sides can only be ordered and eaten by someone who has already ordered a dinner entrée. When my sister(who ordered an entrée) ordered the mac and cheese to go, it was no problem, but because a new person sat at the table and was going to be the one eating the side, it became an issue. I did not understand this policy at all, especially since they advertise their sides as large and sharable. My friend ended up having to order a steak, otherwise he wouldn’t have been able to eat anything. My advice: just completely avoid the sides. It’s a hassle to figure our their policies and is not well explained.

Taking into consideration all the amazing reviews about this place in Montpelier my experience was not so great or not as good as I expected. Our reservation was made through Open Table and we arrived early and the hostess was able to accommodate us even though it wasn’t our reservation time. Our table had an awkward set up. I think it could be combined with the table next to us for one big half booth. So two of us sat on the cushioned side and the other on added chair hence the awkward set up. The restaurant itself has a dark, fancy steakhouse feel. It’s good for a nice date night. They have a couple of toy trains running through the walls high above the tables which was fun to look at. Our server seemed to be swamped with tables. She came quickly at first but we hadn’t had much time to look over the menu or pick out a wine. After we picked the wine we had to wait a while for her to come back and for us to place the order. I ordered a filet mignon medium but it came out well done. I had to call over the hostess so she could get the server because she was no where to be seen. By the time she came over and I showed her the over cooked steak the rest of my party was more than halfway done with their meals and I was so hungry I started eating my sides. They were nice enough to re-cook a new steak for me and they brought out a whole new dish but by then I wasn’t hungry anymore. Dessert portions are huge here. Every dish I saw go by looked fantastic. I cannot remember the name of the dessert we ordered but it was made with puff pastry stacked high. Quite impressing when it reached the table. Overall a nice place but did not impress me compared to other steakhouses I’ve been to.

Had the steak tip salad topped with onion rings… very good. Tips were cooked medium-rare like I asked and had a nice char on them. Very fresh ingredients. Also split the truffle fries with the person I was meeting and they were very good. I would get my own order next time as they were that good. Nice beer selection as well. Very clean restaurant with a friendly staff.

We have been here twice and are never disappointed! They have s’mores for two, you get your own little stove. The burger are juicy and on brioche! Shoestring french fries! They have an awesome brunch. It is in the Capitol Plaza hotel in Montpelier, VT. We always know that we will go here everytime we go to Vermont! All I can say is this is the place to eat at. Go and enjoy!
