I’ve never gotten up and walked out on somebody speaking at a church before, but I got up and walked out on Kathleen Tabor when she was speaking for her youth group «An Audience of One» in Kona Hawaii on their «summer international outreach» vacation trip.
The kids «praise and worship» consisted of booty shaking and break dancing to prerecorded Christian hip hop, while silently mouthing the lyrics. Talk about the dumbing down of worship and Christianity.
There was a lot of talk about «submitting to God» and references to the Old Testament, and not a lot of evidence of Jesus’ actual New Testament teachings.
The theology Mr and Mrs Tabor were promoting seemed to mainly be the following transitive logic: God the Father is in charge, and you need to submit to God’s will, and God put the Tabors in charge over you (take their word for that), so you need to submit to Mr and Mrs Tabor’s will, in order to be «right» with God. If you want to be «right with God» you need to do what the Tabors tell you. Basically the Tabors know the will of God because he talks directly to them. And you should take their word for it, even if God is telling you something different.
The Tabors talked a lot about how God talks to them. For example, they don’t decide where they’re going on their outreach trips… God tells them. And this year God told them to take a long vacation in Hawaii… nice ! Thanks God!
I found their language describing the kids to be very condescending, boasting right in front of the kids about how broken the kids were, until they got saved by the Tabors.
And Mrs Tabor really, really lost my faith and confidence, when she bragged about how Jesus «literally» appeared to her, and talked to her last year, and told her he’s going to root out all the pedophiles and homosexuals in the church. And he needs her help apparently. LOL. That’s not Jesus talking, Mrs Tabor, that’s your own ignorance and homophobia.
Uhh, Mrs Tabor, statistically, overwhelmingly, most pedophiles are straight heterosexuals.
And the fact that she’s preaching her hatred of gays to these kids should be a crime itself. This kind of bigotry and adult bullying cloaked in «God’s word» is a significant reason why gay and lesbian kids commit suicide at a rate as much as 8 times higher than their straight counterparts
.
If any of the «An Audience of One» kids read this, please just download The Message translation of the bible (
) onto your smart phone, and read Jesus’ words for yourself in fresh language closer to the spirit of the actual Greek language with which the New Testament and Jesus’ word were first written. The Old Testament (and the Tabors) are not the last word. God is Still Speaking…
Follow what Jesus tells you in your heart. God is unknowable… for the Tabors to claim they know the will of God is just wrong. You’ll know in your heart what is right.
