Very disappointed by the mango mochi. The mochi itself is not the right consistency, it’s not soft/chewy enough, and the mango filling inside was average — I liked that it had real mangoes but unfortunately several chunks were still unripe so it didn’t taste very good. Can’t compare to the ones I had in Hong Kong. I guess my quest for good mango mochi in the US continues…

I have two words for you: mango mochi. This bakery treat blew me away. If you like mangoes or fruity pastries, this is a must-have. I bought several for my family and they agree. It is beyond excellent. The bakery here is low-key and cheap. Come with cash.

I should totally read the reviews before going there ! GZzzzz. So expensive. 2.25 for an egg tart, and 2.85 for a BBQ pork bun. I won’t mind paying extra for decent pastries. But I do think it is over price and they taste not that great. Nothing special about the egg tart. I mean not that much different compare to the 1.25 from Shen kee bakery. The BBQ pork taste good but the bun was hard and stiff. I don’t know if it was fresh or not . Finally, I do need to said that the owner is very nice and friendly. And this is a small business … Maybe that will be the only reason if I come back in the future :)

**DISCLAIMER: Writing this review on behalf of my bf(his thoughts, my words). I have personally never tried this place, but he is so disappointed by this bakery that he insisted that I write it for him(I have yet to convert him into a Unilocaler. hehe) I only come here because it’s the only Chinese bakery available in DTMV ;( The pastries are ridiculously expensive, even for MV and SF standards. Pork & pineapple buns are almost $ 2, and egg tarts are $ 2.25EACH(!!!) I wouldn’t mind paying more for a decent pastry, but the ones here are just flavorless! Don’t get me wrong, I understand it’s a family business and someone’s gotta make that dough … but it’s just disappointing that the pastries are so terrible. For example, the pineapple buns taste like plain ‘olé dinner rolls and they don’t even have that signature pineapple bun crispy exterior! Due to slow turnover, some of the pastries become stale and hard. Boo.

I wanted egg tarts so I was excited that there was one near me after dinner. But it wasn’t that great for me — I thought that the crust of the egg tart was too flaky and dry. My friends and I got roughly 6 – 7 pastries between us, and all of them were mediocre at best. We were all pretty disappointed. The lady though was very nice and I do realize this is a small business. but I also don’t want to be lying in my reviews. :x. The place is cash only.

I was craving Chinese baked goods and decided to try some at Hong Kong Chinese Bakery. I ordered a slice of a Napolean and a slice of chestnut cake. Both were rather disappointing because they were both dry. They both looked so appetizing at the time I purchased them only to take a few bites thinking ‘whomp whomp womp’ :(Both cakes were on the bland side and overly dry as though they had been sitting on display for 2+ days. Maybe I’ll give them another try when I’m in the area. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here.

Mango mochi. *mic drop* I’m going to be honest, I don’t come here for any other pastry. Sure, some things catch my eye, but I know I can always go to some other bakery, or I can hold out until I go to Little Saigon or Chinatown, to grab a red bean pastry. But the man, the mango mochi is just divine. It’s not too hard on the outside, and in fact is soft enough for you to feel the mango pieces inside. The mochi itself is sweet, and not too powdery(there’s not too much flour on the outside, either, but just enough for you to hold onto it!) Once you bite inside, you’re treated to the tangy sweetness of slightly syrupy mango. And to wrap up the picture? Coconut shavings all around the outside. Bring cash to this place! And get the mango mochi.

Love this little bare bones bakery! It always transports me to San Francisco Chinatown, with its stacks and stacks of trays covered with authentic Chinese pastries. Egg tarts are delicious, as are the savory pork buns. Pretty expensive, but that doesn’t subtract from the quality of the bakery at all.

I walked into this bakery today remembering the few times my ex would go in to get a quick pastry or dim sum. It wasn’t the best, but it was always cheap and can potentially save a craving. They did have slices of cake that were about ~$ 4. Always nice to have a cheap dim sum place that is primarily to go as there isn’t a place to sit, but grab some goods and walk along Castro Street.

It’s cheap as far as bakeries go, but really expensive as far Chinese bakeries go. Everything I’ve had here tastes like the standard Chinese bakery fare, but for 2x or 3x the price. I’ve tried: Chiffon cake — soooo light and fluffy Egg tarts — Flaky and tasty Coconut bun: Needs more coconut, but still pretty good. Mango mochi: Interesting. Must try at least once just to taste the mango chunks in the center. Sponge cake: spongey but too dry Mango pudding: Missing mango chunks Hotdog bun: Hot dog is placed on the side of the bun so you get mouthfuls of bread before getting to the hotdog The owners are nice. Remember, cash only!

First time in mountain view, walking down Castro sweet, stopped on by for a quick mid-afternoon snack. Small place owned by a couple. They had a fair amount of baked goods. 1. BBQ Pork Bun, which was okay. The meat was interesting. I’m used to buns with chunkier meat rather than mushy meat inside a thick sauce. PRICEY. Over two dollars for this. 2. Almond cookie, crunchy, not much almond taste, looked beautiful 3. Chiffon Cake light and airy cake. Love this type of cake! Easy to eat. I’m craving another one!

CASHONLY! For a hole-in-the-wall Chinese bakery, this place sure is expensive! There’s an assortment of things here: dim sum(like siu mai, BBQ pork buns, steamed buns, sponge cake, sesame balls), classic bakery items(egg tarts, cakes, pineapple buns), Chinese pastries(like mooncakes, almond cookies) and more American baked goods(like decorated cookies). I’ve walked by this place hundreds of times but finally stopped in recently only because not much else was open at 8:30am. I regretted walking in after seeing the prices but felt bad just walking straight back out, so I asked for an egg tart. The egg tarts were kept in a warmer behind the counter rather than in the front display, so there was no price visible. A single egg tart came out to be $ 1.75! If I had known, I probably would have given it a second thought. As for the egg tart itself, it was just okay. The custard filling had a good texture and wasn’t too sweet. The crust, on the other hand, had no structure and couldn’t hold the shape of the egg tart. It was a little too buttery and flaky in a soft way that dissolved in your mouth rather than crispy flaky, which made it feel like it wasn’t necessarily freshly made. The egg tarts are a reasonable size, but not really worth $ 1.75 each. If you’re looking for a Chinese bakery in the immediate area, this place will suffice. But I’d suggest elsewhere for better quality and prices.

I purchased 3 buns yesterday and none of them were fresh. The egg tarts were acceptable but not worth $ 1.65 per. Very pricey for Asian baked goods, I don’t mind paying more if they were good but this is not the case. All of buns were definitely leftovers from the weekend. The custard inside the custard steam bun was gummy and so dry it crumbles. The bread was hard and dry. I should have known when the lady at the counter tried so hard to push her old buns on me. I initially choose 5 items and she offered me a baked cocktail bun for $ 1 more so I said OK. It was probably suppose to go in the trash and I got suckered.

I don’t mind paying a little extra for delicious, high-quality food, but this bakery did not meet my expectations. I was in the area for lunch and decided to stop in to get some goodies for my family. I saw that they had bride’s cake on display and decided to get some. I asked if they were freshly-made daily and the lady there said yes. Silly me, of course she would say so. But I took her word for it and I didn’t want to be rude and poke them — they were individually wrapped — to see if that was true. When we ate them at home, they were almost as hard as a brick. Hmm. I also bought a lemon roll that was about $ 9 and that tasted alright. Definitely overpriced, though. I understand that business in that area need to charge a little extra to accommodate their business expenses, but charging $ 1.75 for a 10 fl oz can of soymilk is a bit much, no? One pro about this place: they DO take credit cards.

I love to pop into Honk Kong Bakery when I am downtown and don’t plan on having a full meal. It is a little treasure. I have tried the pork buns, sesame balls, egg tarts, and a few other things. I am an adventurous eater, and I don’t know why I don’t try something different when I am in lol. I always seem to cheese between a few familiar things. Next time, I will definitely try something new. I have never been let down. Everything has been yummy. The owners are always nice. I don’t think I have ever brought my fella here. Yay another reason to go :)

This has been my go-to breakfast spot for 3 weeks now. Don’t forget, ca$h only! I always get: baked cha siu bao(bbq pork bun) depending on my mood/hunger gai mei bao(cocktail bun) bolo bao(pineapple bun) The owners are a nice old chinese couple that have had the shop for ~10 years and they also happen to know my dad, so I’m probably a little biased. The prices and quality aren’t quite up to Cupertino’s standards, but you’ll always get that nice fragrance of gluten right when you walk in which I love. I’ll still keep coming here everyday for their baked BBQ pork buns. They’re the best and most consistent buns they make here and are worth the trip every morning.

An extra star to support local business owned by an old chinese couple :-) They open as early as 8 am. For three buns I was charged $ 7.35 with tax included. That makes $ 2.45/bun, which was more than I expected.(The buns back home in Sacramento are 0.85, and even in SF Chinatown about 1.50/bun.) However, I do admit that they were as big as my palm! One bun filled me up. You also have to consider their rent and utilities expenses– the tiny toasty shop is situated in downtown mountain view. The bbq pork buns have a lot of filling! It’s saucy and sweet with a mix of pork meat and pork fat. The bread itself was a little flat but the surface is nicely baked. Try this one! I wasn’t a fan of the curry bun because I couldn’t tell what I was biting into. It was very mushy. I also prefer salty over sweet curry. There’s free one hour parallel parking down the streets. Parking on a weekday morning wasn’t a problem for me. Give this place a try :-) they seem to bake a lot of mini moon cakes but definitely try the classic baked bbq pork bun!

This is a gem in downtown Mountain View. Castro Street back in the day had many Asian restaurants, but it’s gone through a bit of a transformation over the years. However, Hong Kong Bakery has remained and continues to offer delicious treats. I come here often for their baked BBQ Pork Buns. First off, they are HUGE! They are filled with a lot of meat and are very tasty. They are also baked fresh daily and are served warm. How much better can they get? They are practically a meal by itself. I also enjoy their lemon and blueberry chiffon cakes and their variety of butter cookies. The staff are friendly and helpful. It’s a small little shop, but you’ll be pleased if you stop by.

The dan tat(egg custard) here are good and made with love. I placed an order for 13(don’t ask, there’s a reason!) ahead of time and arranged for pick-up at 230pm. I would definitely recommend doing so if you’re ordering a lot so you can make sure they have enough for you. Keep in mind that each tart is $ 1.75 so it does definitely add up. I arrived promptly at 230 and a friendly man who I presume was the owner told me it would take about 5 – 10 more minutes because the dan tat were still in the oven and he wanted to give them to me fresh. So I waited and got them, nice and warm. If only they were all for me… Regardless, they were delicious and I was pleased with my experience overall. If I were in a rush, I might’ve just requested to get whatever dan tat he had at the time instead of wait the extra minutes, but they’re just so much better when they’re warm and fresh.
