Went here in spite of the reviews – it was a nice pick. We had the guisada, very tender and juicy. My daughter had combo Fajitas(FYI on Tuesday you can get all you can eat for regular price) and they were very lean. The charro beans were better than the refried beans. We got the sampler for the kids and it was tasty as well. The only disappointment was the green sauce on the chicken enchilada, it was thick instead of saucy. Free ice cream cone finishes the meal very well. Service was also wonderful!

The red sauce had a good flavor but the temperature was cold — straight out of the refrigerator cold. I ordered the chicken fajita enchiladas with sour cream sauce. It came with refried beans and rice. The beans and rice were both completely flavorless. It was almost as if they opened a can of refried beans, heated them and then served them. The chicken fajita meat was flavored well however it wasn’t enough to offset the bland sour cream sauce. They offer a complementary sopapilla dusted with cinnamon and sugar — it was good. They have honey and butter out on the table in squeeze bottles. The bottle of honey was extremely sticky. The sweet tea was very good.

Warm chips and a good(not excellent) salsa kept this from being a total disaster. Although they weren’t very busy, service was extremely slow. My wife and I each ordered beef chili relleno with charro beans instead of refried beans. The charro beans were barely warm enough to eat, but the rellenos were not. We took them home and heated them in the microwave for lunch the next day. They were much better then than when first served at the restaurant. I will not return.

Wow this place has gone downhill from what it used to be 15 yrs ago when I went to college here. Service was a nightmare, took nearly 45 mins for food to come out with a mostly empty dining room. Ordered the beef fajitas and my friend ordered cfs. Fajitas were average at best, cfs was terrible and seemed to be fried with old oil, or with oil that was used to cook their catfish. Yuck! Would have given 3 stars but our waitress was just horrible and it took us nearly 1.5 hours to get in and out, with a nearly empty dining room… pathetic!

I have been going here for years and it is consistently good. Great chips and salsa, and just about everything I’ve ever ordered has been top notch. Had a chicken breast stuffed with shrimp and jalapeño and then deep fried last time I was there and it was one of the best things I’ve ever had. Give this place a try!

Delicious hot sauce and hot crunchy yummy chips… i always say, if the chips and sauce are bad that’s a sign the food will be too… that theory failed me today… I ordered the taco carbon… I didn’t like the tortilla or the cheese on top but the meat inside was good. rice, good. beans, good… tea, good my son got the spicy chicken quesadilla. he liked it and it was huge… overall it wasn’t nasty. but it wasn’t fantastic. I would go back if the other places were packed… it was kinda pricey tho 35 for just us two! Bet the fajitas would’ve been a better choice, maybe next time!

Been to La Carreta four times recently. Firendly staff, nice bar, good house frozen ritas and very good nachos. They gave me half beef half chicken one time when I ordered just chicken. I avoid beef nachos/fajitas because sometimes the beef can be fatty, chewy and grisly but their beef was very good and tender. Reaonable prices. I’ll be back!

In town for the weekend, and had lunch here. Staff was very courteous, and attentive to all my needs throughout my meal. I had one of their lunch combinations(see my picture) and it was delicious. Food was fresh, hot, and tasty. I would definitely come back… and oh yeah, free soft serve ice cream on your way out, yum. I didn’t give it 5 stars only because it’s not the«best» I’ve ever had. I reserve 5 stars for meals that leave me in amazement, which means I almost never give them out. This meal was as perfect as it gets for this type of restaurant.

The staff was very friendly and attentive, and the restaurant is nicely decorated and inviting! We were seated right away and the food came out quickly after we ordered. That was the good part… The veggie fajitas were a bit odd, with huge chunks of cauliflower and broccoli dominating the plate, a few whole mushrooms, a tiny slice of tomato, about a 2 inch piece of corn on the cob, all sitting atop the very greasy onions(which seemed to be the only thing actually grilled instead of semi boiled). The chips were way too greasy and the hot sauce in need of some serious renovation. My daughter ordered the chicken quesadillas and said they were good. However, If I hadn’t been hungry enough to eat pretty much anything I probably would have just gone somewhere else.

Everything started off great with the chips and salsa! Great flavor with a little kick in the salsa. The chips arrived and were still hot! Awesome! The meal arrived and I got the numero two and couldn’t remember what I actuallly got. It wasn’t anything that I would get again. The beans were dry and I think bacon was in there? The sauces covered everything so much I couldn’t tell the difference between the two choices. Just a blah lunch. This place was recommended by a local hotel but I won’t be in a hurry to go back. $ 20 meal for two people at lunch.

I just don’t have any experience with Mexican food that was on the plus side of the food scale. Particularly true in New Orleans. Changes have been happening in New Orleans since the failure of the federal levee system in 2005. The City now has a much larger Hispanic population that affects the culture, music, and more importantly the food of this international city. As to La Carreta Mexican Café in Nacogdoches, Texas this was the first place that I truly enjoyed what is classified as Mexican food. Enjoyed the Eotanos Platter, Camerones Yucatan, and the Spoapilla and I hope I got the spelling correct. The restaurant is a nice place and the staff has always been friendly on my visits. Would love to find something as good in New Orleans and would welcome suggestions from other Unilocalers.

They have a really nice hostess who greets you with a smile as soon as you enter. Aside from that, I see no reason to go to this place. The food is not impressive AT all. Also, I asked for limes for my fajitas(like any real Mexican would) and they brought me super dry bar limes. I was lucky I was able to squeeze two drops. Also, the bartender could do a better job and the low lighting even during the day is creepy.

The outside of the restaurant looked great, smelled great outside! They advertised oysters on the half shell as we walked in the door, so we ordered a dozen. THEREISNOTHINGWORSETHANBADOYSTERS… they smelled terrible as they sat them on the table. We tried one anyway, and they tasted as bad as they smelled. Next, the drinks were slow and wrong. No salt means no salt. The corn tortillas were tough. Not sure how you make a corn tortilla tough, call these people they can tell you. Out of the three plates, two were correct. One had grilled shrimp as a side, and they came after we finished our meal. Top shelf margarita on the rocks was REALLY good. 5 stars on the margarita! Total combination of everything is a 1.6, have no choice but to give a 2.

Just how I remember it from when I was a kid. On a recent trip back to Nacogdoches I was excited and worried to go back here. I didn’t want to be disappointed if the food wasn’t going to be as good as it used to be. I’m so glad I went! Very good food with great flavor and wonderful service! Our waiter was so nice and I wish I remembered his name. I ordered a two item combo with a chicken enchilada with sour cream sauce and a chicken chimichanga with queso.(You pick your item and sauce.) They were both really good. The chips and salsa were yummy. A good kick to the salsa and really fresh and hot chips. My sister had a free margarita with her fajitas which was very tasty and had a good lime flavor. The only item I’m not wild about is the sopapillas. Not amazing, but still good. This place is a must when visiting Nac. Skip the chains and head over to La Carreta!

Please ignore the dumb negative reviews. La Caretta is the best Tex-Mex place in Nacogdoches, hands down — and there are quite a few to choose from in this town. They make their own tortillas, and their lunch service is always friendly and speedy. When I come back to town, I always have to stop here at one point.

Was here for a Sunday or Saturday lunch with my man Big Ben, it was still early so not many people were there. Good because we were seated quickly. The décor of the place is nice and looks authentic, and so was the food! Wish it come sooner(it did take about 20+ mins), or maybe I was being impatient bc I was soo hungry. The service was pretty descent(hot waitresses!!!) and the comp tortilla chips were BOMB!!! Ben and I went through 2 baskets-full before the food arrrived, bc it tooks like 20 mins. If not for the tremendously long wait, considering the place wasn’t pretty dead, and the lemonade that tasted like pool water, La Carreta would have at least gotten a 4STAR for their prices — fair
