Farmdog Surf School

Highly recommend Farmdog Surf School! My college age daughter and I spent a wonderful afternoon paddleboarding with the most patient teacher on the Outer Banks, Robert. We had never paddleboated before but within an hour, we were exploring Shallow Bag Bay in Manteo.
I can’t claim that we’ll ever try surfing, but if we do, we will go to Farmdog Surf School for instruction.

This place is really fantastic. Robert is quick to respond to emails. He helped in sorting out few of my queries before my visit. I had my class on Saturday with Joe, who was equally helpful. He gave me bobs and bits of information through out the session on what I need to know, if I wanted to surf on my own back home. I’m taking another class before I leave, to learn a bit more about the equipment choices and try out one of their famous espressos.
I’m definitely recommending this place to my friends.

If their surfing is as good as their pour-​over coffee this place is just heaven! COFFEE IS AWESOME! I like to boutique too! Try the booty shorts!

Just an extremely well run organization. Great staff, good equipment, location and set up and nice coffee shop. They know surfing but they also know good business and service. A great place to learn.

Top notch. Omar was my our instructor. We had 3 people in our group. It was the first time surfing for all of us. By the end of the lesson we were all riding waves. Shane and Aaron are great too. If you want to try surfing this place is perfect.

Took Sup lessons and had a blast. Instructor was very knowledgeable and patient. I will definitely go back for tours.

This review is based on the café experience alone, since we didn’t rent any equipment or take any lessons — just stopped in for a bite on our way out of town. The food was all really tasty & I appreciated the healthy options. The cashier took time to explain about all of their food — ethically sourced meats & cheeses, vegan protein powder in the smoothie, etc. We got three sandwiches (egg/​cheese/​bacon/​bagel/​bbq sauce /​/​egg/​cheese/​sausage panini /​/​caprese panini), which were all tasty & filling. I got the ‘cakebatter’ smoothie, which was so good! I was craving it again this morning so I replicated it at home! I highly recommend for the service, the taste, and the quality.

Austin an Omar came to our vacation house in Duck with surf boards and wet suits, which made it very convenient for us to surf (last year we used a different company and had to carry our boards a long distance). In our group, we had two adults and three kids between the ages of 13 and 9. The instructors were very friendly and did a great job helping us catch waves. They also did an excellent job helping the kids safely paddle out to the waves.

After having a GREAT experience last year, I decided to do another 3 Day Surf Camp on my vacation in OBX this year. Day 3 finished today and again I had a great time! Skyla and Hannah were patient and great! Again, I would really recommend these guys if you are looking to take surf lessons when in OBX. Two years in a row… two thumbs up!

Awesome private SUP lesson at Roanoke Island yesterday! My husband, son, and friend loved their private lesson with Robert. He was a great teacher, laid back, and very patient with them for almost two hours on the water. 100% recommended!

So this was my first time going surfing… I’ve dreamt of it since as long as I can remember but growing up in a small town in PA made that a little difficult. I decided to finally book a private surf lesson on vaca and my expectations were exceeded. Shane was my surf guru and he was awesome. He was super laid back, easy to talk to, and full of tips and tricks. He helped me catch countless waves and made sure I ended with a good one. He also helped me out when I wiped out and my board was about to hit me in the face. Awesome experience – recommend to anyone. Also great gear!

I’m so glad we stumbled upon this little coffee shop. The coffee is tasty and rich, the breakfast sandwiches hit the spot, and the staff is oh so friendly. This is the neighborhood coffee joint that makes you feel at home right when you walk in — great for tourists (us), and seems like a favorite among the locals.

What a great surf shop! We had a group of 4 that took a surf lesson from Shane and Joe. Really friendly, patient, encouraging and made for a great time. I highly recommend this place if you’re in the area. Cheap suit and board rental prices too. Absolute 5 star.

Wonderful staff, very easy to talk to and very patient teachers. They have a lot of services to offer and the café sells very wonderful (and healthy) food.

I rented a Paddle board for the week. I thought the price was reasonable and the staff very friendly. I’d use them again.

Offers great services. Surf and sup lessons for those venturing into the ocean with a board. A hippy convent store with a nice selection of beer and refreshments. They have a conscience attitude toward healthy lifestyles and healthy living. Well done!

Had a great Saturday at Farmdog Surfing. Joe is a great instructor. He relayed instruction in a way that was easy to understand and made the session FUN! With his help and feedback, for the first time ever, I was able to catch my own waves.
The staff at the shop was friendly and welcoming. Bonus: you can buy a freshly made smoothie on-​site after surfing.

Took a Stand Up Paddle Boarding lesson with 9 other people in Corolla. The three guys from farmdogs were extremely accommodating and even came to our rental to explain everything and sign waivers/​pay. After we spent 2 hours on the bay by the Whalehead Club and it was a wonderful experience. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking to learn how to paddle board!

My wife took a lesson in Corolla, NC this morning with Robert, of Farmdog Surf School. She booked a beginner’s lesson online and had expected a group class of no more than 4 students but she ended up being the only one. Robert, the owner, was a patient instructor who took the time to explain surfing techniques and their reasoning throughout the lesson. He taught her about how waves break, how to take advantage of their energy. He used a number of techniques to help build confidence and skill quickly. He was very engaging, encouraging, and careful to ensure a positive experience. My wife’s direct quote: «I had a lot of fun. I’m ready for another lesson.»
As a longterm surfer and failed instructor to my wife, sadly, I really appreciated being able to rely on Robert’s and Farmdog’s expertise in teaching new folks to surf. I was out in the water with them, paddling my SUP around them, and really appreciated the individualized attention, encouragement, and successes that my wife had as a result. Hell, Robert was generous enough to offer me tips for surfing my SUP. Seriously, a really nice guy with a great teaching style.

Awesome little market and coffee bar. The coffee was really high quality beans and the best cup I have ever had in the OBX hands down. I have been coming here for at least two decades so this is no small feat! We also got fresh made juices. My wife got the Nessie, a green juice that was great and I got the Hair of dog with beets and ginger. I have been on a fresh juice kick and was very happy to find a spot that produced fresh made in front of me juice. Both were tasty and made to order. Service was extremely friendly and comfortable. The only thing I would ask for was that they didn’t carry Oskar blues beers in their beer selection. I’d love to see some Dales Pale Ale here.
