Brand new business, just opened up on Sunday, June 29th. JANANI is actually a Grocery Store full of Indian food. This includes everything from appetizers like Samosas, to fresh vegetables like Eggplant and Garlic to Frozen foods to Indian Sodas like Thums Up and Limca and various Ingredients common in Indian foods. LOCATION: Its a nicely furnished store located on 95th Rd and Book Rd, in the same complex as Little Caesars and the YMCA. The store doesn’t have a light-up sign just yet, but you’ll find it sitting snug between Big Apple Bagel and Rose Massage. PRODUCT: This place doesn’t feature as much items as Masala N’ More or Ambica Foods, but I’m assuming that’s because its just starting off. The business does however seem to be pushing for the Organic Ingredients experience, with the entire right-side of the store full of Organic items. I personally appreciate that they are aware of it, and therefore they are trying to draw in more than just the Indian crowd. They sell fresh made Samosas and Chapathis/Rotis(thin-bread made from flour) everyday. They are in partner with another woman who makes these everyday prior to putting them up for sale. Samosas go for 99¢ each. They are delicious! Though they aren’t in the correct shape as traditional samosas(which should be pyramid-like), these samosas are flatter and longer. In the store you will find common Indian ingredients such as MDH and MTR masalas, Maggi noodles, Chaana dal, Bhujia, etc. I don’t entirely remember in detail what they had, it was kind of overwhelming looking at that wall. LOOK/FEEL: The store is well kept. Granted, it is brand new. The organization of the shelves and items are neat and precise. When you go in there, you will notice how well kept the place is. Upon entering you will most likely be greeted almost immediately. The store owner, Pooja, is out there to create a good customer experience. I remember I talked to her and she was friendly. She noted that she likes to keep the customers entertained. In my book, she deserve a pat on the back for that :) There is also soothing music played from an iPod dock that isn’t too loud to interfere with conversations, but just right. PRICE/SERVICE: When I shopped in there, I bought 4 samosas, at 99¢ each. Decent price, but somehow I was charged $ 5.71 for that transaction. I didn’t realize then, but on the drive home I noticed that is quite a high amount of tax! The price should have been around $ 4.25! I know its a small amount to be complaining about, but hey, every penny counts. I believe she had charged me for 5 samosas instead of 4. Sadly, she didn’t offer a receipt, nor did I ask. So that’s my luck. Anyways, for items like that, the individual price is nice. My second time I came in, I bought 3 of those Thums Up/Limca sodas, at that time the prices checked out and each can was about 99¢. That’s a good deal, because normally can’t find those Coca-Cola brand items in the USA. Ah, but one con is, in order to use your Credit/Debit card, you must spend a minimum of $ 10! That’s unfortunate, because usually most places have it at $ 5 minimum, but $ 10 is kind of high. Worst part is that there isn’t even a sign up about that!!! So, concluding my review of this brand new JANANI grocery store, I have to rate it a 4 out of 5, because it has the goods, but the way I was charged was sloppy and that’s not a good first impression. Hopefully this shop stays around for a while, I’ve seen a lot of businesses come and go in that complex, hopefully this store gets a good customer base.
