Great volunteers — be sure to take the docent-led tour. The museum has period displays. Get outside to see the train yard and the workshop.

Well worth the visit. Nicest bunch of people to gather in one place. Informative and obviously love what they’re doing. It’s run by volunteers so please donate generously ! !

This was absolutely wonderful! Beyond what we expected for a volunteer run organization. Al, the docent, gave a spectacular tour geared toward my 5-year-old train lover. The displays became interactive with his guidance, both inside and out in the shed. This is just one extra reason to take a trip to Nevada City with your young one.(Best lodging: The Outside Inn)

Definitely worth a visit. A nice size museum in a very nice building. The docents were very friendly and very informative. They really wanted us to know everything about the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad. The tour included going through the machine shop where they build/fix the train cars.

My wife and I visited a few months ago, and we really enjoyed it. Not nearly as big as the Railroad Museum in Sacramento, but, for us at least, more fun. They had so many interesting exhibits and restorations going on. Our tour guide was really friendly, and it was cool to see the volunteers working on restoring an old locomotive. We really learned a lot.

I can’t believe the lack of reviews for this amazing museum! We went there for the first time yesterday and had a great time with a personalized tour tailored just for us. Pretty amazing to have such one on one attention and all for free! Make sure you leave a donation though to support such a wonderful museum. Oh and make sure to check out the gift shop, there is something for every train lover there!
