Came here with my cousin and Fiancé few months back. My cousin is a wine member here, and she had to pick up her order, so we decided to also do a tasting! The tasting room is super cute, and everyone who comes in is very friendly, and everyone seems to know the owner! The owner also seems super sweet and funny! We all had such a good time here! Cant wait until we are in the town again to come back here!

I arrived back from the Diggins just in time for one wine tasting in Nevada City. How can you visit without hitting up at least one winery? Szabo seemed intriguing on their website, especially with several blends on the menu. They occupy a rather narrow, but very long, storefront in downtown Nevada City with a modern and eclectic décor. Like most of the options in the area, the actual winery is miles away, so this is just a tasting room. My tasting flight was nearly all reds with only one Sauvignon Blanc from Lake County. I love that the Zinfandels and Rhones taste different all up and down the foothills. Szabo puts a lot of effort into their wines, and I could taste the difference. The staff were very busy and rushed, but I had a very nice experience discussing the wine and the various artwork and decorations. Each one has a story! The only downsides are the difficult parking and the potential to be crowded. Whether or not you like the wine is always subjective to each pallete, but I did appreciate the Foothill Style wines offered at Szabo.

This is such a cool spot for a glass of wine. I love the atmosphere and the owner is super cool and very friendly. I am actually a part of their wine club, that is how much I enjoy their wine. I would love to see their winery. I hope they decide to host events in the future but for now, the tasting room is just fine.

We stopped in on Memorial Day since a few of the other tasting rooms in town were closed. So glad we found this place. It was our second stop, but the wines were far superior to the first. We liked everything we tried, but the Primitivo was the winner so we took home two bottles since they were just $ 17, what a deal! The proprietor was friendly enough, and didn’t try to push the wine club on us… good thing, or I might have been tempted. I will look forward to being back in the neighborhood.

The polices in this tasting room are very different from most other wineries. when you pay for tastings in all other wineries I’ve been to, you get that amount applied to your wine purchase.(Not at this winery.) The owner did not talk much about his wine as he poured our wine. Service was very poor, we were NOT given a receipt when we paid for our wine and tasting. I wonder why that’s the case? Not planning to go back to this winery.

I am gonna keep this short and sweet. I love this wine! We are members and have never had a bad bottle of wine from Szabo. Alex is a hoot and makes it fun when we are tasting. Bottom Line: If you are ever in Nevada City, stop into the tasting room and have a glass or a taste a flight!

The 1 star is for location. We have been here 2x now, and thought we might have a better visit the second time. No such luck; the same surly, unaccomodating wine pourer. They might have a good wine, but we lost patience with the not so good ones he insisted on pouring. You get what he feels like pouring that day, and get to pay $ 6 for the pleasure.

Cheese plate is horrendous, made out of premade three cheeses which one was hardened and got dis colored from pre packaged(two very similar to another). The bread was wrapped around in a clear wrap was hard and tasteless. The«wine flights» were not half glass full like every other establishment, BUT was literally for two sips. Don’t waste your money or your time. I only liked the«viola» wine. That’s it.

Wine was relatively good but the customer service needs some serious help. My girlfriend and I went for a glass of wine, the gentleman that helped us, if that’s what you call it, was more interested in socializing with friends then helping his customers. He also over-charged me which I didn’t discover until later, when I reviewed my bank statement. I was charge for 3 transactions; $ 50, $ 14. and $ 9 but only purchased two glasses of wine for $ 14.00.

Stumbled upon this little«gem» while wine tasting and antique shopping in the foothills. We personally had a fantastic time with Alex Szabo(owner) while talking and wine tasting. It was myself, my wife and two of her girlfriends. We liked the place so much I joined his wine club, drank a bottle there, and brought home 6 more. FYIFANTASTICZIN He is also priced to sell. Standard clubs is around 40 – 50 bucks for 2 bottles. He is 40 – 50 for 3 bottles… and they are not too young either. Very happy with his product. Let’s talk about the art on his walls. Artist name is Liz Collins. Mix media at it’s best. I posted numerous pics. I fell in love with one of the paintings. Would love to purchase at a future date if it has not been bought. For wine club members, he switches it up. Not the usual boring lunches on occasion, which every winery does. He hires a DJ and does a dance party. Nevada City has quaint little bed and breakfasts within walking distance. We will be dancing the night way soon. Thank goodness my wife makes me look good. This winery is must if you enjoy good wine and friendly company. Alex cranked the music up, got us snacks, and was ready to «party down» with us. West Roseville joined his club.

This was the worst tasting room I’ve ever been to, but I will give it one star because the wine was pretty good. My boyfriend and I stopped by here based on the previous reviews. It was a mistake. The owner, Alex, was not friendly at all and when we tried to engage him in conversation, he was very short with us and was solely focused on his computer. We each had a tasting, followed by an additional glass of wine each. Alex disappeared for awhile and other customers were waiting for service. Alex returned reeking of weed. We purchased 4 bottles of the 2010 Syrah, and Alex STILL charged us for the tasting, and four glasses of wine(despite our only ordering two). We will not be returning here.

To be honest, the wine is actually pretty good. However, attitude and service needs major improvement. After being ignored for some time, and treated less important than the friends or cute girls that were also there, the tasting room guy actually had the audacity to ask us if we’d like to buy anything… nah. Def would have though if the personality was there.

This place is the bomb. Wine is delicious. My favorite way to pass a Sunday afternoon, sitting in the plush chairs up front, accompanied by the killer cheese/fruit plate, and perhaps the Sauvignon Blanc or any of the reds. I must also mention — Alex is the perfect host — always makes you feel welcome and important.

Great wine and company! We had a one day get away to Nevada city. To our dismay many wineries were shut down or closed. We were told to check Szabo’s in town. The door was ajar but only the owner, Alex was there. He was so gracious to let us in for a taste even though he was not really open. A couple bottles open, a great European window seat to watch the passer byes and good company. We had a great time and loved the wine! My husband who does not really care for many wines liked every one. Thank you Alex for making our time there memorable.

Szabo makes a couple of my favorite wines, period. The Sauv Blanc reminds me of childhood, carrying the odors of many local plants. Voila is also a great unique red blend. The tasting room and host, Alex, also have lots of character. Ask Alex about some of the unique pieces and it will make for a wonderful story!

My boyfriend and I have really enjoyed traveling around Nevada City and Grass Valley sampling wines from the local vineyards; and we have become members at several of them. But, hands down, the best wine and the best tasting room ambiance in Nevada County is here at Szabo. Best in the summertime when the storefront windows are open to the evening breezes, sitting in the big, comfy leather chairs, sipping the most delectable wine we have found in the area. The sauvignon blanc is the best white I’ve ever had; if you are from the Northern CA area, you will find it to be a very nostalgic experience. It has the most beautiful fragrance of meadow sage growing wild in the hot summer sun, with a clean, fruity finish. Alex, the owner and proprietor, has several wonderful reds, the Voila being my personal favorite, the Petite Syrah being a close second. If for nothing else but the experience of seeing Alex’s amazing transformation of his tasting room from a historic Nevada City shop space to a relaxing oasis, you shouldn’t miss out on a trip to Szabo. A couple features include a stunning wood bar and pillars salvaged from a temple in the Middle East. Really different and refreshing! We have always had great service; and, since the wine makers are usually present at the tasting room, a wonderful interactive experience. They are very passionate about what they do, and it shows.

Awesome, cozy tasting room and they were even dog friendly! Wine was delicious and owners were really friendly and great to talk to. Only downside is the tasting was $ 6 — not bad at all when you compare them to Napa, but a little different when you compare them to all the wineries in Grass Valley who don’t charge for tastings. This is more of a place you spend the evening with a great glass of wine rather than a «learn about each type of wine in detail» because there were lots of people in the tasting room and they didn’t have a ton of time to explain every wine to us. All in all — this place was awesome. I’ll definitely be back for a relaxing evening!

We spent the day in old town Nevada City doing the touristy window shopping thing. My wife wanted to taste some wine but only likes sweeter white wines like Moscato. We entered the tasting room and asked for any sweet wines. Alex Szabo the owner politely told us that he didn’t have anything we would like and recommended the«competition» across the street. He said, «tell them I sent you.» We thought that he handled his business in a very honest frank manner. And the fact that he recommended the competition was a great move. I think it was a very classy move and give him five stars just for his honesty and business acumen!

Nevada County is a growing wine region within the Sierra Foothills AVA. There are now about 18 wineries within the area making it a worthwhile locale for the wine tourist. Among the best producers is Szabo Vineyards. The eponymous owner/winemaker is the effusive Alex Szabo who, with his wife Marylin, serves their excellent wines at their tasting room in downtown Nevada City. Most are estate wines from their vineyard/winery located a few miles from town. The wines are elegant and food-friendly in style with the Syrah and the Rhone-style blend ‘Voila’ being particularly noteworthy. If you are interested in the Nevada County wine scene these are wines that you should be sure try.
