New Braunfels, for a small town, has plenty of corporate establishments to tame that beast of a hunger at the darkest bowels of your stomach and quench that Sahara Desert in your mouth. While everyone has their preferences in vittles, mine are that more of the road less traveled. And in NB, there’s few of these paths. Fortunately for this highly critical bastard, I found such a path, Revolucion Coffee + Juice NB, sister location to the ones in SA and H-Town. In the spirit of full disclosure, I should indicate that I dumbfoundedly but ecstatically stumbled upon it about a year ago, nestled on the corner of a lonely Harley-Davidson parking lot. This converted, shiny, Airstream trailer locally brews/presses and dispenses the same beverages as the other locations. For parents, the beauty of having multiple children is that they learn from errors made with the older kids and do not repeat them with the younger kids. Unlike its older siblings, the food offerings here differ and are further expanded with other options for your consumption: Revo-dillas and locally made organic tamales. While the selection of the consumables is limited, their taste is unforgettable. Case in point: their turkey pesto revo-dilla was nearly a memory by the time I exited the parking lot. Sandwiched between two almond flour tortillas, you find some turkey, goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes, all nicely bonded together with some trailer-made pesto. On your first bite, the unexpected pleasant tortilla crunch leads to the tomatoey-pesto-ey turkey goodness; your taste buds trip out as they joyfully try to make out that combination while your eyebrows move into different positions to reflect your tasting enjoyment. Their tamal options include: black beans and goat cheese(black beans cooked with epazote and locally produced goat cheese), spinach and caramelized onion(spunach sauteed in olive oil and caramelized onions), and my personal favorite, Poblano & cheese(roasted poblano pepper, fresh red salsa made with chile de arbol and melted meunster cheese). A tradional tamal may not be fillling, but these are not your typical tamales. The tamales here are twice if not three the size and their masa to meat ratio is perfect. The dough is lightly salted and breaks at right time allowing you to fully savor the mixture of the masa and filling of you choice. If you’re in the area and in the mood for really good coffee and unordinary ordinary food, visit Revolucion NB. You may be surprised and may walk away with a quesadilla, juice, coffee and a Harley.
