All I can say is, «Oh, my goodness!» The wings are AMAZING! The fries and macaroni and cheese are pretty terrific too. The prices are incredible! The young lady at the counter was lovely and friendly and the food is worth every dime paid… and more! Great value and great food.

Best Southern Fried Chicken I have had in a long time. The pieces are large and not from those 48 day old chickens that are at the super market rotisserie, but from adult chicken fryers. The breading is great with the right amount of spice, salt and sweet. Counter workers are polite and friendly. Customers are loud but fun and friendly.

Crown Chicken and Grill located at 922 Bank Street in beautiful, safe, and bright New London, CT. Open daily from 7am-11pm. This local chicken joint took on a daunting task of replacing the chain known as KFC. Lofty shoes to fill. Rumors have it, that the franchise was run by a lunatic, and the stories I’ve heard lead me to believe that the man’s nature led to the demise of KFC in town. Hey, the Groton location is still open. So Crown had a reputation to build, and they’ve been around quite a while, and I had yet to try them out. I ordered a 10 piece Mixed Chicken special that came with 2 sides and 2 biscuits. I also ordered a «New York style platter», featuring fish over rice with salad. Rice and salad is an unbelievably underrated combination. It is so light, so simple, and so good. The fried chicken was very fresh. It warmed up the car with its exciting and welcoming aroma. I will say that it was quite orange in color, and was very«gas station» quality if you know what I mean. It just had the taste and appearance of «cheap and nuclear» fried chicken. I do not mean to degrade the taste, because I actually like ‘gas station’ chicken. It is tasty, meaty, and good. Healthy? I did not say that. So again, I cannot help but be reminded of what it reminds me of, but I am not complaining and I thought it was fantastic, and fresh. And cheap, the 10 piece combo meal was $ 14.99. The sides were a slight disappointment. I ordered corn on the cob, and to my chagrin, neither my parents wanted it, probably wishing for traditional mashed potatoes, but their errant son decided to go rogue. Hey, I thought they’d like the corn more! Regardless, the whole corn on the cob, was very hot, but the texture was very rubbery. Seriously, I thought to myself, this looks, smells, and is presented as authentic corn on the cob, but if you could tell what GMO corn was, this texturally felt like fake corn. Coleslaw. The best coleslaw is KFC coleslaw. It is chopped well, sweet, and crunchy. It is THE coleslaw to beat. The quality can change depending on the restaurant itself, but more or less, KFC has the best. The absolute worst Coleslaw is what I can only describe as some type of vinegary, almost pickled and tangy coleslaw, that I usually identify with store brand coleslaw that comes in bulk. Not to say KFC does individual portions, but to me, supermarket coleslaw is made, according to a diagram, with no love or care given to the end product. I actually did inquire to the counter associate as to the quality of the coleslaw, trying to see if I could gauge an honest answer. Well, the coleslaw did disappoint me, it did taste like supermarket coleslaw. To its credit, it was on the higher end of that category. Here comes the fish! With these New York style platters with other such protein possibilities as steamed shrimp, lamb, and chicken, I had a hard time choosing between the options. Ultimately, the idea that the next day was going to be a BBQ fest full of meat and, well, meat, I opted for the fish. I saw a photo on Unilocal of someone’s fish and thought I’d give it a chance. But I really do want to try the shrimp and lamb someday. If finding real bones(more than I’d want) in the fried fish in this dish is an indication of freshness, this fish was caught ten minutes before I arrived at Crown. I actually appreciate that, so it doesn’t get negative points, and the remainder of the dish was impressive. A ton of fried fish, a bunch of foreign rice, and salad with dressing. It was a meal fit for a Hungry Man, and for only $ 6.99, it was a hell of a deal. Compare that to a Fish sandwich meal at the double arches, I think Crown is a steal! Overall, I came away from my first visit at Crown impressed. Not everything was perfect, but from the eager, welcoming, and friendly staff to the actual food received, it was a positive experience, and I would like to go back there, anytime I’m in the mood for a cheap, local, and generous meal.
