AKA Streetcar Café. I went back and forth on whether I should review this place but after seeing the masses of people pouring in here during the National Championship, I think the secret is out. I literally cannot live without their Greek Omelet and will not wake up in New Orleans without getting one. And I’ve proven time and time again, with a bloody mary in your hand and a Greek Omelet in your belly, your hangover will disappear!

Great little hole in the wall, don’t be fooled by the exterior. Combination greek/cajun menu, who would have thought??? I highly recommend the greek omelette for breakfast and either a po-boy or jambalaya for lunch. Try to get bu here every time I am in New Orleans!

Dixie’s is an awesome little dive restaurant hidden in plain view near one of New Orlean’s busiest streets – Canal Street. The restaurant actually sits on the corner of Canal and Carondelet(just a few feet off Canal on Carondelet, so look carefully for it), and it’s perfect for a quick lunch while out taking in the sites of New Orleans. Don’t go to Dixie’s expecting fine china and white linen – it’s not one of those places! Dixie’s is where you wanna head for quick, quality diner style food, which includes a combination of southern favorites(grit and eggs), New Orleans cajun staples(Jambalaya and Po-Boys), and Greek Gyros! Hmmm– go figure, right? Nonetheless, the combo certainly seems to work for Dixies! They do all of this food, and they do it all well. One of my favorite menu items is the chicken gyro platter, which, on my last visit, I ordered with a Greek salad instead of fries. The gyro is loaded with delicious homemade Tzatziki dressing, and I love theirs so much that I ordered extra on the side. The Greek salad is excellent as well – and mostly because of the delicious and unique for Greek dressing they serve it with(it’s a cream based instead of oil/vinegar based). They also add plenty of Feta cheese to the salad, and that’s a plus. Vinny did order the fries with his gyro and said they were awesome! As for other menu items, I recommend the Hamburger Po-Boy and Jambalaya. Another fun thing about Dixie’s is the counter staff. On my last visit, I had the best time conversing and joking around with the staff while they were prepping my food. It made waiting in line for my food enjoyable :)

The food here is good and it’s reasonably priced. The best part is that it’s grab and go so you don’t have to wait too long to continue your adventure around town. The chicken shwarma is delicious and tastes fresh.

A local told us about this place when another restaurant was closed. A real hole in the wall but the food was great. Try the Greek omelet or the club. The service wasn’t bad either.

Another compromise for us today at lunch. The place we wanted to eat at was closed, so we dropped in here because it was near by and … well… open. Pretty limited menu, but some basic New Orleans grill food with a mix of Greek/Med classics. We had to share a table with some other people, but it’s really not a big deal. Service was on the slow side, but certainly friendly. I had the hot sausage sandwich, which turned out to be a «sort of» po’boy. Despite have a somewhat strange appearance(not a traditional sausage), the sandwich was excellent. I really enjoyed it. The fries aren’t bad either, very nicely seasoned. The prices are about what you would expect for a hole-in-the-wall, downtown, greasy-grill eatery. It’s exactly that, and expecting anything more would be a mistake. So at face-value, this place is pretty good. The catch is, it’s really not unique or special in any way. Pretty basic place that could be found in any town. I would recommend it only the sense that it’s not part of the insanity that is Bourbon Street, so it’s very accessible and easy. Sometimes, that’s all you need.

Tiny, tiny in the cut spot near Canal St. I wanted to save money and was shopping around for a cheap meal. Looked cheap from the outside, so I decided to step in. On a side note it cost $ 2 to use the restroom here. So many odd characters when I got in there. Mardi Gras was going on and I was a little distraught and hungry. I was going to order a gyro but I figured, forget I’m in New Orleans. I ordered the chicken & sausage jambalaya with a water. The lady said, «That’s it:. It was a small box of rice, chicken, with several sausages in it. Not bad, could have cooked it better myself.

I actually had one of the better po’boys here. The only thing I didn’t like about it was the bread, which was not very good. However, they also have a middle eastern menu that is a little surprising. The falafel is pretty good, sauce a little lacking but the falafel itself-which they called midddle eastern hush puppies(hilarious, but also appropriate come to think of it.) It’s a fast food place, I’m not expecting gourmet food here but was pleasantly surprised at the choices they had beyond the usual stuff you’d find, also, they take credit cards. Awesome

This place is conveniently located right behind the St Charles streetcar and will definitely fulfill your need for something other than etoufee or po boys(not that you can’t get this here as well!). I had a regular gyro which comes with fries and they were both good. My friend had the falafel which where nice, moist and tasty. Only negative is that they pour tsa ziki sauce on and you don’t dip it yourself, but still very good, not dry and crumbly like at most places. I would suggest this place if you are nearby – plus they have breakfast all day.

One block off Canal, across from Bourbon, I was walking back to my room and saw this place. Alright, the name should have been my first clue but I got an immediate craving for kafta or maybe a gyro. Well I got a kafta(they spelled it koufta) pita with fries and extra tzatziki sauce for the fries. Walked back to my room and almost couldn’t wait to get into that bag and get to eating my late night delight. WELL — was I in for a surprise! The kafta was just unseasoned hamburger(and not even tasting as good as grilled hamburger meat) and the tzatziki was just sour cream — that’s all — just sour cream. If I could have given them zero stars I would still have to give them one star because the fries were good and they gave me lots of ketchup packets. Very, very, very, disappointing.
