Burritoville

Was always hesitant to come here cause the Unilocal reviews aren’t that positive. Only 3 stars?
Finally, one rainy evening, I gave it the shot.
Complimentary chips and salsa! Good start! They are very plain though. :(
Still, its free! :)
Ordered the grilled chicken salad. Though the chicken was better than it looks, but the salad is very average.
I see why this place gets 3 stars.

The burritos here are mediocre at best, but I’ve visited several times because I love their horchata!

I keep coming back here but I don’t really know why. The prices aren’t cheap and the service is surly at best. The place is always empty at lunchtime. The tables and benches are unstable. The food is alright. They give free chips which is nice – but grudgingly.

Pretty much the worst nachos in the world. Which is unfortunate, considering we were in need of nachos, as a motivational tool.

The option of fresh jalepeños is a gigantic advantage over Chipotle. However, the portion seems significantly smaller for the same price one pays at a Qdoba or Chipotle type place.
The salsas they offer are fresher though. It has it’s ups and it’s downs. New York is not a Mexican food town that’s for sure, but Burritoville manages to combine the a la carte formula with fresher spicier ingredients.
Not bad for what it is. But if you are seeing a show near UCB or Clearview Cinemas this is the spot to eat before the shows.

Their daily deals can’t be beat especially if you’re in the mood for mexican food in the Chelsea area. Plus the movies are next door.

I would title this review: «Just Because its Empty Doesn’t Mean it’s Not Good.’» My friend John and I went there last night, as I had yet to eat an authentic taste of Mexican food in NYC. In fact, for years, my favorite food was a taco at a Korean-​Mexican store that made their tacos with pita bread, instead of tortillas, but it was hard to chew and hurt my teeth after I ate it! It moved to another location, too, so I don’t forage for that place like I used to do when passing through NYC. And the chicken was Korean barbecue. So, besides dining years ago at an authentic restaurant where I had the best enchilada I had tasted, probably ever, I wanted to try something someplace else. We were in Chelsea, and he had told me about it, so we went there.
It was empty. I thought it was closing. I walked down the steps into the restaurant with some serious trepidation. Everything was clean, just a bit old looking. Like a cafeteria. Six booths and some tables. No frills. So, I looked at the menu on the wall and started to be somewhat relieved. They had some funky choices for burritos, some with vegetables and chilis, chicken with vegetables and chili, chicken with refried beans. So, I relaxed a little bit. I asked the chef which was better, the grilled chicken with veggies or the chicken with refried beans, He said the latter was more spicy. I said, «spicy spicy» or «spicy?» He said spicy but not too spicy.
I ordered it.
I went to the ladies room (it’s worth going just to see the key they give you – a carved wooden home-​made paddle that weighs about 2 pounds. The bathroom was decent, tool When I returned I saw my burrito waiting for me.
When we finally did eat (my friend ordered nachos with just cheese), I was ready to chomp down. The burrito was easily a half foot long, or more. I thought I’d save half. Yeah, right. It was good. It was a mixture of everything, kinda already mashed, so one spent more time savoring the flavor, than discerning what you were biting. It was an adjustment for me, because my burritos in the Mission District of San Francisco, had real chunky pieces of grilled chicken. Taqueria La Cumbre, for those inclined to see what a good Mexican restaurant is – West Coast style.
My only complaint and a big one: it wasn’t warm enough. It sat out too long. I returned it to them for heating up (taking off the foil), and waited the four or so minutes for its return. It wasn’t the best, but it was very good. I could easily pop in there for a treat. Another reason I liked it? It had cool movie posters of Mexican movies, and the people who worked there spoke Spanish. Now, that’s authentic.

I really try to avoid a place that is known for humungous calories for a burrito such as Chipotle and Burritoville, but alas Mexican is a typical go-​to meal for people who need gluten-​free or vegan options. My beef burrito was fine and tasty enough, but my vegan friend (and apparently a lot of other people at this location) is all up in the Soy options.

Hungry? Want some mexican food? BURRITO TO THE FACE!!! Ok now that your full how was the experience? The décor isn’t bad. The seating is sufficient. Now for their bread and butter or more like beans and cheese. The food isn’t anything to write home to mexico about. Its not bad its not great it’s not memorable once you’ve fed that inner fat kid or in my case… myself. With nothing to say you’re on about your day. The menu isn’t bad necessarily it’s just the food could be better it could use some better ingredients. Nowadays there are Chipotle’s, Baja Fresh’ and Qdobas everywhere Burritoville needs to do their namesake justice and make some real kickass burritos. They need to rep the burrito til the cheese falls off. Until then sure, I’ll pass by once a year when I’m hungry and indecisive as to where to go for lunch.

Along with the creepy dining area, the food here was just as disturbing.
Ice cold guacamole. It was tasteless and looked like green tea ice cream. The chips were sprinkled on a paper plate.
Taco shells were soggy and ruined the chicken and beef picadillo inside.
Years ago, Burritoville was booming. Sadly, the quality has diminished. But of course you have other options con salsa in NYC. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Adiós Burritoville.

Perhaps I’m used to whatever flavorings Chipotle is putting in its food, but I cant help but feel that these burritos taste somewhat bland. I like coming here before a movie next door. Nothing really bad here, nothing really special, either. Place always seems pretty quiet and never too busy, either.

I have worked at my current company for 7 years, and it’s kind of funny how my lunch rotation now is unrecognizable from what it was in 2004 or 2005. Back then, Burritoville was a once-​a-​week mainstay of my mid-​day excursions, but after a while I guess we just sort of started seeing other people.
So, long story short, I hadn’t been to Burritoville in 3 or 4 years before having a strange whim to go today.
The layout of the place has completely changed, and not for the better. It almost impersonated a sit-​down restaurant before, and it has this weird, quirky ambiance that I enjoyed. Now, it’s no different from the other chains (which is not a bad thing — I am no burrito snob and I actually bookend my work week with Chipotle and Qdoba now). Still, it’s kind of sad to see them caving so badly considering the whole reason I went was to see if they were still somewhat of an alternative.
The burrito itself is fine (I’m eating it now as I type this… god, I’m such a tosser), but I feel like they had a greater range of choices back in the day.
It’s passable, but I won’t be in any hurry to go back. Time waits for no restaurant, I suppose.

Ugh, so long since my review i stopped going to burritoville — the quality was already piss poor, but the $ 5 burrito daily specials (although more often than not, the nasty bbq burrito that no one in their right mind would order) and proximity to my apt lured me in… however, after they started charging for toppings on top of the $ 5 burrito (which somehow rings up as 5.70 something rather than 5.44 as the qdoba $ 5 burrito does), I vowed to boycott, and no longer come here.
This was actually great, as qdoba ended up doing a $ 5 burrito (for ANY burrito, within reason, and not some nasty bbq flavor with crap quality ingredients), but sadly as they’ve now made the special before 7 pm only, i was unfortunate to return to burritoville today (and once 2 weeks ago).
While i’m slightly angry and hostile at qdoba for not letting me do the $ 5 burrito 5 minutes after 7 (so this review is angrier than i’d like), i’m furious that i’m stuck eating a nasty bbq burrito from burritoville instead. Even 2 weeks ago, i was reminded of how disgusting the ingredients are, and how small the burritos are in comparison to qdoba. my boyfriend had gotten it for me, so i didnt have the misfortune of seeing it made, but today, even slightly intoxicated, the burrito on the line looked disgusting, days old, and off putting. I left furious that not only was i paying more than qdoba for their $ 5 burrito, i was eating a nasty ass bbq burrito (as their special so often is), and it looked foul even on the line (and yes, its foul to eat as well, and 99% tortilla as they’re still beyond stingy with their toppings and ingredients that are likely beyond expiration date).
I’d rather work in the kitchen at qdoba to get my $ 5 burrito after 7 than be back here. yuck. also, he disregarded half the toppings i requested, so i have bbq chicken + lettuce and a giant tortilla rolled about 3x over as it has nothing in it.
Anyone that likes burritoville circa 2010 — 2011 is prob coming in from jersey. even taco bell or chipotle are superior. Even at full price, they’re still bad (as the specials are one of their burrito options, in theory switched up daily… but often the bbq/“rodeo” burrito).

I ordered the $ 5 burrito special of the day. Delicious!
The service was fast. The staff friendly.
I’ll be back.

This place is a joke. I used to go to the old Burritoville on 23^rd street years back, around 2002. They re-​opened it recently. Here are main main problems with this place:
The staff couldn’t be more rude. The Cashier had an angry scowl on her face with her arms folded, (same with the server guy) They seemed angry to be serving the gringo.
Secondly, The food sucked. The tacos had fake gaucomole and
the salsa sucked as well. Go to Chipotle if your going to eat at a chain mexican place.
There wasn’t any music playing, it was silent, you could hear people chewing their food. It was freezing cold inside and lastly it was overpriced. I hope this place closes down.

I hadn’t been to Burritoville in years, I thought they had all closed but I guess this one stayed or re-​opened. Now they have the same layout as Chipotle with all the food out. Anyways, it’s a lot better than I remember it being. I remember the rice used to be very dry. doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. I got a whole wheat tortilla (they also have a spinach and tomato option which is pretty cool) and thought it was very tasty.
However, when I went a young girl served me. she seemed scared to put anything on the tortilla, I kept having to say ‘more rice’ ‘more guac’ etc she’d barely sprinkle anything on. when we were sitting down she was getting ready to leave, my friend asked her how old she was and she said 11!!! um. isn’t that illegal?! super weird. and since my burrito barely had anything in it, I was still hungry after (which it’s rare for me to be hungry after eating a burrito!). I came back a week later, she wasn’t there and the man who made my burrito did a much better job.
The other thing is they have soy cheese but the 2 times I went no one seems to have any idea what soy cheese they use, so I have no idea if it’s vegan or not (so I stay away from it). The basic buritto (border burrito) is only $ 5 (plus $ 1 i think for guacamole) not bad!
They used to have unlimited chips. now it seems like they just give you a bunch with your burrito and they’re super salty, I remember I used to be addicted to their chips.
Anyways, definitely ups and downs here but it is one of the tastier burritos I think I’ve had in the city, they also have $ 5 burritos (I think they switch up which one is $ 5 but the 2 times I went the one I had was $ 5) so I’ll probably go back, although kind of want to know what the deal is with having an 11 year old working there.

I an attempt to break my Chipotle addiction I thought I’d check out some other so-​called Mexican places. Although I was a bit skeptical of a vegan burrito, it turned out to be delightful! I highly recommend the Mega Soy, which features tempeh, tofu sour cream, soy cheese, brown rice, red beans, and guacamole. They also have Cholula, my absolute favorite hot sauce. My mouth is watering just thinking about the delectable mingling of ingredients. You can expect to spend $ 10+ for lunch, but the burritos are huge and very filling.
Finally, a burrito joint where I can stuff my face and tell myself it’s healthy because it’s vegan :)

This might sound crazy… but this place will always hold a special place in my heart. I received the worst news of my life about a year ago. Fortunately, I had a friend with me who made me eat. We went here. Even in the midst of that horror I still enjoyed every bite of the food I had here. I haven’t gone back yet. But I plan to do so soon to see how awesome it’ll taste when I’m happy :-)

Wandering aimlessly while hungry in the city usually yields me great results, this time was no different. The sign that said $ 5.00 burrito special was all it took.
Walked in to a super awesome spot, old spanish movie posters and very clean. The burrito special isn’t exactly what I had a taste for so I ended up getting tacos and a ground beef burrito. The options for toppings almost blew my mind. Everything was fresh, crisp and super tasty; a much better choice than chipotle.
The staff was super friendly and nice, which was a plus; I’d definitely go check this spot out again. Too awesome.

Forget Chipotle.
Burritoville is a perfect place for the health conscious. You can create your burrito in multiple ways — unwrapped or wrapped, spicy or mild, with meat, fish, soy, beans, etc. They have brown rice (a major plus!) and even soy sour cream and soy cheese. (Yes, soy is good for you.) You can also get unlimited chips and salsa if you’re dining in. (No, this isn’t so good for you.)
I like my usual order — unwrapped chicken burrito with chunks of white meat, fresh veggies, black beans and a ton of hot salsa. The salad is my second favorite. My next order will be their tilapia wrap. Good price, good portion. We’re definitely going to frequent this place for lunch!
