Summary: Hard-hitting kung fu meets modern training techniques in a pleasant, familial environment. I first heard of Sifu Wong about a year and a half ago, from two of the most reliable sources known to man: word of mouth and Youtube. From Youtube, I could discern that his form was rooted in years of hard training; from my friend, I heard nothing but glowing recommendations and praise. So I took the plunge; while I had stayed in shape throughout college and my early career, it had been years since I had trained in any style of kung fu. For me, simply spending time in the small, clean and orderly space conjured vague memories from my childhood, ranging from the thud of the striking pads to the spicy-sweet smell of incense. Indeed, I felt that I had come home. Yet the biggest surprise was yet to come. For those of you familiar with the traditions and customs of kung fu, you’ll understand that kung fu schools are patterned on families, with the Sifu being the head of the family, and the students brothers and sisters. This was a concept I understood, but one that I hadn’t quite seen in action until now; for the most part, the training halls and gyms I had frequented in the past were cold and sterile: while the practitioners were friendly, they tended to keep everyone at arm’s length. Here, however I was welcomed with open arms, and accepted from the very beginning. I soon found myself learning forms, lion dancing, pad work, and sparring – all punctuated by friendly ribbing, affectionate jousting, and a warm, wonderful environment. Unlike the common stereotypes of the harsh, unyielding kung fu master, Sifu Wong is positive, gentle, and encouraging; I’ve learned more in a year than in all the combined time I spent in other schools. So take my advice: come for the kung fu, and stay for the people.
