I’m here once a week. It’s an UWS staple! It’s the healthy dosa alternative with a fusion of tastes between East and West.

Delicious combos. Love the chutneys, particularly the coconut. They are more filling than you would think.

Seriously a fan of this place and whenever we’re on the west side, we’ll stop in. The portions are huge and incredibly tasty.

Been coming to Hampton Chutney for 10 years. Always hits the spot. Peanut chutney is the best!

I can’t believe I’ve lived in the UWS for three months but have not gone here yet. First experience: spicy perfection. I got the #6 as a dosa — spicy potato, pinch, roasted tomatoes and jack cheese, with the mango chutney. I didn’t quite know what to expect, but what I got was a mix of spicy South Indian food wrapped in a dosa(rice batter mixed with black lentils). It was huge — spanned the diagonal length of a regular food service tray — and all for $ 13(this includes tax). If I wasn’t starving, this easily could have been two meals. I ate in the sit down area(you order at the counter and the buzz you when your food is ready), but it seemed like most of their business was takeout. If you’re in UWS and looking for a delicious meal on the cheap, go to Hampton Chutney!

I order from here maybe once a month. I like the breakfast dosa and the mango chutney. Masala deluxe is good as well. Last order was so-so. I got a breakfast dosa with avocado but the avocado didn’t look so good. Very brown. Would hope for better quality. It was my first time adding avocado and I don’t think I will do that again.

This place is great… Really well done… Great atmosphere… Great for families and kids. Clean bathroom. Staff is not indian, but are really nice and engaging. We loved that it was BYOB. We bought a six pack from the store down the block and saved a ton on booze. Reasonably priced for NYC — for sure.

I ate here tonight with tears in my eyes thinking about times past in this nice area of the UWS, and about moments I have had years ago in this restaurant worrying over the same things I worry over now. It is amazing to eat food like this. Clean, somehow at once flavorful and stalwart, decadent and healthful. The dosas are perfectly made, the #8(grilled chicken, caramelized onions, peppers, arugula) with the peanut chutney is a masterpiece. I don’t know what to say guys. Does the person at the counter seem rude? Maybe they are unhappy about the very thing you are unhappy about and if you asked you would both be friends or lovers or even married years from now. It is so impossible to see into the mind of another person, to ever really know – even on a fundamental level – the people we care about and love. So what? So we give up on everyone? No, we accept whatever shortcomings there might be in a person to cherish the few amazing things we do know for sure about them. And look, we know the food here is outstanding. It has been for like 10 years now. The place is more of a 4 but the rating needs to be higher. I was crying, sitting alone here tonight, worried but hopeful, and the food here comforted me, it was like knowing something for sure, like being positive about some small fact, like being in love.

Was there on a friday night last week and on the insistence of my date we stopped in for dinner. There was only a few customers inside when we walked in. It’s an order at the counter restaurant so we ordered two types of dosa’s, Roasted Tomatoes and Avocado. You get a choice of chutney to choose from and got the peanut and mango chutneys. Our dosa’s were ready fairly quick and after eating them, we both agreed there are better dosa’s out there. If you are fan of authentic dosa’s, you won’t find it here.

Cute atmosphere, interesting and diverse menu options, healthy, and hearty. Dosas and uttapams are their main offering. A Dosa is a crêpe-like wrap made primarily from lentils(gluten free!). Uttapams are the same but served«open face» like a pizza. You choose from 6 different chutneys to eat with it. I had the coconut, subtly sweet and thick. Note: they are pretty huge! Prices range from $ 9 – 15 per item. They also serve sandwiches and salads for the more traditional diners. I wish I had the room to try all the drinks — many different lassi’s, chai, juice, etc. I also tried a sample of a cookie that was pretty good. Very good food and spot, especially in this neighborhood. I think it’s a bit overpriced, but it’s not much more than you’d pay for a meal around here. I’d recommend it to vegetarians, those avoiding gluten, and meat eaters alike!

I love this place. It’s different but not so exotic it scares you away. Plus it’s healthy and fresh. The number 1 with mango chutney is yummy! Oh and their chocolate chunk cookies are no joke.

Yumm-o !!! The intense flavors are amazing and pops in my mouth. Curry chicken with mango sauce is an amazing combo. Dosa is large enough to share. Must try!

I have written to Hampton Chutney asking them to please have a restaurant in Washington D.C., but they said that was not in their plans. I love this place so much and miss eating there every week when I used to live in NYC. The dosas are made with lentils and filled with delicious savory fillings. I always go for the breakfast dosa with avocado and mango chutney. It is a perfect breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I will be going into NYC this weekend and will make sure to stop here when I’m in town!

I have to say it is like nothing else in the city. Well beside the other location which I visited in the West Village last summer. I enjoyed my first dosa although I was not a fan of the crammed space. This time I got delivery and even in 0 degree weather, I had a hot and delicious meal. The uttampam had a rice lentil base which was delicious and loaded with spinach, chicken, roasted tomato, and goat cheese. Clearly I ordered the #12 with the cilantro chutney. They do not skimp here! The only irony here is I did not even need the chutney with all the flavor of the toppings. I can’t wait to return as it is one of the few places I can actually afford. Yes it was nealy $ 12 but thats how much a salad costs at a nearby fast food salad bar. It was topped with a generous amount of meat, cheese and veggies and save the chutney to enjoy later on anything from bread to eggs!

PROS: –Tasty fresh food! I had the masala deluxe dosa(I think). It was cheesy and curry-y at the same time… a combo I’ve never really experienced before. However, it worked! It’s not something I would ever crave though, it wasn’t amazing. –Fast-food style self service. You walk up to the counter and order. This could be a con for some, but great if you’re in the go. –Cozy interior… nicely decorated. Word of warning: sit as far away from the door on a windy or cold day! Even then, you might still catch a drift though :/ –The cashier girl who took our order was pretty nice! She gave me her recommendations when I told her I didn’t know what to order. CONS: –It is a bit overpriced. There is nothing that bugs me more than overpriced food! That’s why I had to take off two stars! The food was great, but not amazing, and I would normally only be willing to pay $ 7 for it. I paid $ 11.95 plus tip! Maybe the ingredients cost a lot or something, but they should mark the price down for being a self service eatery. For this reason, I don’t think I’ll ever come back. –As I mentioned before, the wind coming in every time the door opened made the experience a little bit more annoying. So… try to come during warm weather!

We developed some intense appetites after frantically traipsing through the American Museum of Natural History, thus we happily walked on over to this fine establishment for our much needed Indian food fix. My friend and I both defaulted to the proverbial masala dosa, in spite of the wide range of choices. Granted, most of them were omnivore in nature, turkey, chicken, cheese, etc., presumably to appeal to the Western palate. However, I was semi-adventurous with my chutney selection — pumpkin. Pretty much the only pumpkin I’ve had thus far in anticipation of fall, so it felt like an exceptional decision/event. Look okay yes, my life is bland like that, leave me alone. I also treated myself to the vegan chai tea and my friend had some kind of delicious soup with a bunch of vegetables in it(I distinctly recall corn?). Our dosas arrived with relative haste and they were a sight for sore eyes. Granted, the traditional sambar accompaniment was absent, but these beautifully massive crepes were generously ladled with an obese portion of curried potatoes. Okay, maybe it was a reasonable amount, but I’m all too familiar with anemically filled dosas. The pumpkin chutney was flipping amazing. Like for reals, do you think I could import that goodness to Houston? Because that would make my life. I proceeded to stuff myself silly with the dosa, no regrets. It was notably less spicy than the dosas of Hillcroft(mini-Indian town in Houston), but just as flavorful. Dare I say that this place would be most excellent for novice Indian food explorers. This establishment is more of a casual café, so perfect for quick and delicious meals without must forethought. Anyway I was quite pleased with my dosa and really though, if anyone can snuggle me a gallon of that pumpkin chutney, I will totally promise my firstborn to you.

Dosas like spongey, sourdough, giant crepes filled with stuff. Cardamom coffee, lasse and teas, fruit water(watermelon in the summer) lentil soups, the food is really yummy. And there are a lot of places to sit. But there’s an overwhelming amount of strollers, screaming kids and the attached shoving and rudeness, leaving the staff a bit weary and less than buoyant.

This spot has gotten more and more popular over the years, and I believe the prices have also crept up, but they sell a solid, flavorful product that you will not be disappointed with. They have tons of dosa options as well as sandwiches and sides. Good luck getting a seat!
