I stumbled upon the website , which is like a craigslist for stylist looking for hair models. After sitting in my car for an hour, pouring over the different listings, I decided upon Hayato Beside. I emailed the stylist, Luis, gave him my history and some pics and asked if he could work with me. He emailed me back and said I could come in the next morning. Located on 23rd street in the heart of Gramercy, this place is easily accessible. There are two floors, with the first one housing Hayato and the second floor for Hayato Beside, where the junior stylists work. I went to the main salon first and it was pretty spacious and had all the sleekness of a NY salon. Hayato is a Japanese company so the majority of clientele and staff is as well and they specialize in Japanese treatments. I went up to the second salon and it was much smaller and bare put very sterile how I like and had cute chandeliers. Besides Luis, there was one other stylist, who was quietly working on his client. They were on the opposite side of the room so I never noticed the other set and I felt like I was having a private session. Luis and I went over my hair history and talked about what I wanted and what I didnt like about my regular stylist. I usually go to regular Dominican salons and my blonde always comes out brassy, orange, and tons of bleeding. Domincans are great for blow outs because of the multitude of hair textures in their culture but color can be really iffy, at best. I have really naturally dark, curly/frizzy hair(Im half Black and half east Indian) so achieving a natural blonde is that point, my hair was like Chuckie from Rugrats. Ive been dying my hair for 15 years and this was the worst. Ever. I felt comfortable with Luis because he had worked in a Domincan Salon, so he understood my hair but being at a place like Hayato, he had a better level of color training. We started at 11 and finished at 6. In that time, he colored my roots(I had 4 in. of new growth) toned my whole hair to remove the brass and splotches, cut off about 2 or 3 inches of lopsided hair(the last girl butchered it), gave me a ton of partial highlights(they use wax paper, not foil), toned the highlights, and did a blow out. My hair is slightly darker than I wanted but it’s the toner and I know by the third time I wash it it will be a ash golden blonde. Maybe Im used to local salons that belong in Tabathas Salon Takeover and my expectations may be lower than most Manhattan women, especially because Im not fussy about non essentials but I loved the atmosphere and the service. Luis was attentive and worked with me. He was very extremely polite and so gentle. I definitely recommend this place and Luis if youre on a budget but want quality locks. I spent a fourth of what someone would pay in any of the other places in the neighborhood and did not have to deal with a stylist telling me how I should want my hair

I used to come here when they opened 24 years ago. But my favorite stylist left and I’ve been trying all different places since. Then I recently came back to try again. Hide did my hair cut & Japanese straightening. I love it! What was I thinking all these years???

I have been visiting Hayato for a over a year. I had my hair done at Hayato once and at Hayato Beside, a few times. Each visit there was a treat and a lovely experience with glowing results. Ami and Luis are 2 hairstylists there that I remember having done my hair. Their care was great! The standards are high from my experience for these hair stylists and they listened to what I had asked for. I highly recommend this place! Thank you Hayato and Hayato Beside

Booked an appointment with Luis for a shampoo and blow out(my blonde hair is long and naturally wavy). Luis was extremely professional, and I enjoyed the experience from start to finish! The shampoo chairs were by far the most comfortable I’ve ever experienced, and the Japanese hair products used there are lovely. I’m predicting a very successful career for Luis, and am looking forward to my next appointment with him!

I went in about two months ago with the intention of jazzing up my look with a perm; once I showed up, Yusuke explained(in the polite, tactful manner for which the Japanese have mastered) that such a treatment on my hair super thin hair would totally fry it. Since I had my heart set on the perm– I had compiled a Pinterest board specifically for the occasion featuring only curls– there was no backup plan. Dismayed, I asked for something suitable for a young(ish) woman working in the fashion industry, requesting only that I no longer look like a librarian when he was through. Despite my cryptic direction he gave me a cut that complemented me wonderfully; the highlights he added brightened up my face and were just the right touch! His«omotenashi» of hershey kisses were a nice bonus. Oh, and did I mention his cuts start at only $ 35? He’s my new guy from now on!
