Best Tex Mex I’ve had outside of Texas! I ordered catering from them for my birthday dinner after I tried them at the New Amsterdam Market. They delivered a ton of food along with some really nice gifts! Can’t wait till they have their own restaurant! They’re sourcing is fantastic and they’re super accommodating with food allergies. If you like Tex Mex, you’ve got to try them!

Lonestar Taco had a little booth set up at Governors Island for City of Water Day. I didn’t really know what to expect. I’ve had my share of tacos/carnitas. Let me tell you that the pork carnitas are AMAZING. It is seriously one of the best things that I have ever eaten. They are spicy but not too spicy and just a little saucy. I was definitely wowed and let me tell you I was all evil and bitchy because it was about 180 degrees out there on Saturday so I wasn’t all woo hoo let me have some spicy tacos.

Have you ever eaten something that you get a lot, but one time it’s just prepared so well that you start thinking to yourself, «Why the hell doesn’t everyone do it that way?» Well that’s what I was left wondering about tortillas after checking out Lonestar Taco at the New Amsterdam Market. I was fortunate enough to hear about these guys around a week ago through an old friend whose sister is one of the owners. And unable to turn down the potential for an awesome taco, I made my way over the first chance I could. I found the Lonestar stand in the back corner of the market, where they seemed to be commanding a pretty solid crowd throughout most of the time I was around. I wound up going for 2 tacos — the lengua(daily special when I was here) and an egg & chorizo. And while they were being made, I watched lecherously as my tortillas-to-be were sliced, pressed, and grilled. Thinking back now, I’m actually not even sure that I’ve ever had a freshly prepared tortilla before… and now I will never fully enjoy a non-fresh tortilla again. They were hot. They were delicious. They were the best textured tortillas I’ve ever had — soft but substantial and with just the right amount of crunch to kick off each bite. I could have eaten a 10-pound stack of those suckers without anything else on them. Fortunately, though, there WAS stuff on them, and it was superb as well. My lengua was perfectly tender and delicious, and the taco was adorned with some ridiculously tasty pickled peppers that had just the right amount of spicy kick and transformed the whole taco by making it sweeter than I expected(which was awesome). The egg & chorizo was equally fantastic — the chorizo was cooked on its own at first, after which the egg was tossed right on top to give some sort of gloriously moist mixture of egg and sausage, which again had juuuuuust a bit of spiciness. They had a bunch of other options available as well, including both a carnitas and a special chock full of seasonal veggies which both looked outstanding, and which I’ll definitely be back to try. I basically came down to FiDi with the intention of just trying to support a new business that I had somewhat of a connection to. But I left super impressed, and am seriously looking forward to when Lonestar sets up a permanent shop. Until then, however, may I humbly suggest that you get off of your lazy, hungover ass on Sunday and check these guys out while they’re still at the New Amsterdam Market!
