I used a Groupon to get highlights and a trim and the man who did my hair was rude and off-​putting. He asked me personal questions (do you make a lot of money? when was the last time your boyfriend bought you flowers?) that made me uncomfortable. After telling him that I didn’t want him to put toner in my hair, he did it anyway and charged me extra. I will not be going back. Please note, this review is from summer 2015, when I made the appointment.

I went there to color my hair. My hair fell down in enormous quantities later that day when I brushed it at home, and the falling down continued (though milder) for the following 2 weeks. Color was not what I asked for as it red and brassy, not what we had discussed, she should have used ash cool tones but instead she did something else. She said color looked red because it was wet!!! I don’t usually have my hair styled at saloons so I left with wet hair. She said that I should come back later if after letting it dry if I still saw it red. As I suspected, hair was red when once dry but after all the hair I lost I did not wanted to go back. Also worth to mention that I read so many good reviews about Michelle so I had made the appointment with her, but she tried to have her assistant do the work, which I refused, which resulted in that I was attended 25 minutes after my appointment. I am not coming back.

I’ve followed Michelle around the city for the past three years and am so happy to hear that she has her own salon. She consistently gives me a great cut and style (and her chair-​side manner is awesome). All this at a good and fair price. If you’re a guy in the area, looking for someone who knows men’s hair and wants a little more pampering than at the local barber shop, this is the place.

Went into Michelle’s for a haircut/​highlights/​color/​blowdry. i found a groupon deal but they told me over the phone they would honor the price and they did. Michelle listened to everything I wanted gave me her suggestions and all in all I love my hair :) Salon was nice and clean and didn’t have to wait was right on time with her appointments! Will definitely be back

I just got a great cut with highlights… Michelle is extremely accommodating… when my hair turned out different than I expected she helped arrange to fix it the next day at no charge. (Also the hair assistant is very sweet…) I’ll be back :)

I’ve been a client of Michelle’s since 2008 (when she was at A&R). I’m very picky about my haircuts particularly because of its different textures — thinner on top and thick as hell on the sides. She’s patient and knows exactly what she’s doing.

Having been to salon after salon after salon, paying anywhere from $ 25 to $ 175, I have finally found the ideal spot. I never post reviews until I have been to a place at least three times, well today was my third visit and its official, Arthur is awesome! MY hair is fine and lifeless but he gives it the fullness and bounce it has missing and never breaking my wallet. The location is convenient and the entire staff is just SO AWESOME! I have heard and witness some amazing work by Michelle as well so it seems the whole team is a win win. Ill be going to get my hi lights soon and I can’t wait to see what magic Arthur creates. Oh and the reason I left a star off is because Arthur is only there Fridays and Saturdays and that might be hard for me at times but so far so good!

Found a groupon this morning for the most unbelievable deal inclusive of shampoo, color, cut and blow. I called the salon before I purchased the groupon to ensure I could get an appt today, as I needed it for tonight. They gladly accommodated me. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I had a haircut with Artur and must say its the BEST haircut I’ve ever received in my life. No exaggeration. The color also came out great. All in all, very pleased w the service. Highly recommend.

I’m very happy with Michelle’s, the quality of service, and styling provided. I purchased the groupon for cut, single-​process color, and style and was very happy with the finished look. Michelle understands how color works and is experienced with working with different types of hair. I was a little nervous since I normally go to a Korean or Japanese salon to do my coloring, but Michelle did a great job. Will definitely be going back!

I came here for the first time with a Groupon deal for cut/​color.
Michelle had me seated almost right away and brought over colors for me to choose from. She helped steer me towards a great color. I think there was a bit of a misunderstanding when I asked her how obvious the color would be on my black hair. She suggested that a I get double process color instead because my hair wouldn’t lighten enough levels from a single. I’m glad went with the single because the color definitely does show up but it still looks pretty natural. I LOVE IT! I suppose she thought I wanted something a more dramatic color change.
I got a similar haircut to what I already had but much shorter. Michelle does an awesome job of clarifying exactly what you want. (Definitely not a common enough trait) I usually give a general idea of what I want to the stylist and let them do what they think is best. Even then, she gave me options and explained why she thought a few layers etc. would look good on me. In addition, she is really charming and sweet. I usually read during haircuts but we were talking about all sorts of things.
My hair looks super shiny/​bouncy and the color is SO FREAKING ON POINT for winter! Since my haircut, I have wayyyyy less hair falling out when I brush it. I can’t wait to come back when it’s warmer for some highlights. You should definitely give this place a chance.

I never wrote a review on Unilocal but I just had to do it! I wanted to get highlights but it’s hard to find a place for my curly hair, eventually a friend recommended this place and I wasn’t sure because of the review on Unilocal.I decided to go and it was the best decision ever! She did exactly what I wanted and I can’t be happier from the results. I spent 3.5 hours there and it was great! The people, the vibe, the wine and the haircut. VERY recommended!

I have been to multiple salons in the city and NNJ, who either questioned my choice of going pure red, or, straight out refused that it was doable. I’m 46 years old. My hair has been through hell… bleaching, relaxers, etc.
I went to Michelle’s «questioning» if she could give me my red back. So many salons added browns and mahogany, and purple in order to blend my white roots… made my hair look purple (Arrojo Salon) in order to have them blend into the red.
Straight up, I was scared to ask Michelle for a deep red. I questioned her… and she was absolutely sure that even with my white roots, and hair that hadn’t been dyed in over a year, that she could create an even color red that I wanted.
I have a deep beautiful color red. I came in with a mess of mixed colors… and hadn’t dyed my hair professionally in over 2 years (Arrojo gave me purple hair). I gave up on red.
Michelle did an absolutely amazing job. It’s a tiny shop…4 chairs… but, prices are totally reasonable, you deal ONLY with professionals, and they still provide the same «extras» as the big name salons… wine, head massage, everything!
Definitely a coloring specialist. Don’t bother spending extra at the «big name» salons to pay for the name. I was disappointed multiple times. Michelle’s has great stylists… a great atmosphere… and she gave me red hair!!!
I will definately be back.

Now I’m not a groupon aficionado, but I’m usually okay using it for hair cuts and colorings because my hair grows quickly and even if I don’t like the cut, it’s hard to badly screw me up.
I got an appointment for the next day when I called, and wasn’t made to wait more than maybe 3 minutes before Ian (I think that was his name? I’m horrendous bad at names) introduced himself and we began. In case I got the name wrong, he’s tall, Israeli, and has an awesome gray hair bun thing going on. He listened to me throw out excuses for the sad shape of my ends and helped me pick out a color based on a bad description of a great dye job I had a year ago.
He was really careful in applying the dye and cleaning off the bit I inevitably managed to get on myself. He didn’t force any chit chat which I appreciate, but when it came time to wash conversation flowed pretty naturally. There’s nothing worse than either of you talking simply because you feel you have to. He recommended a deep conditioning, it smelled great and I definitely needed it.
The cut itself is stellar so far. I really like the V shape in the back he suggested and he gave me some gorgeous layers which will look great when my hair dries curly. I’m truly hair illiterate so he made sure it was wash and wear-​able and pointed me toward a great leave in conditioner.
Although I don’t normally blow dry my hair, I don’t even own one, he said everyone needs some spoiling. I’m not usually a fan of straight hair on me but I love it! Groupon or no, I’m coming back to him!
Overall. This totally would be worth paying full price.
Also, offering you wine is always fun.

Michelle’s Hair Color Boutique is the best of the best. Have been searching for a great hairdresser in NYC. Michelle is SO TALENTED and her prices are absolutely reasonable. The hair dressing diamond of New York City. Am the fussiest person when it comes to a hairdresser. Michelle does exactly what you ask her to do and her level of skill, cut & color, is second to none. Thank goodness she is young as I would like her to be my hairdresser for the rest of my life.

I got a color, cut, dye and style at Michelle’s last Sunday and I have gotten so many compliments since. Joe did the job and was so amazingly energetic and friendly. He picked a great color and really listened to what I was looking for. He even offered to go out and get me a coffee! I will 100% be going back to Michelle’s!

I’ve been going to Michelle regularly now for the last couple of years for my coloring, cutting and styling needs. Honestly, I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my hair. I have traveled both near and far, depending on her location in the city, just to have Michelle do my hair. She really knows how to give me that modern and sleek, yet understated look that I like. I’m so happy that she now has her own salon and I’m sure I will be going there for many years to come!
Michelle is a true professional, with a real talent for coloring, cutting and styling. She always does a great job on my hair. She is also such a pleasant person to be around and extremely nice. I feel so relaxed from the moment I step into the salon to the second I head back out onto the bustling city streets.

I saw Michelle for highlights and a cut this past weekend. She did a fabulous job lightening up my dark hair with natural looking golden highlights for summer and the layered cut she have my long hair was just what it needed to add the right amount of body and life into it.
She was great conversation through the process and even offered me a glass of wine.

Despite so many salons in New York– finding something consistently good can be a crap shoot. I have been to many highly rated salons, spent hundreds of dollars and been disappointed.
I am not sure about the valentines day reviewer– her situation is unfortunate but while the salon is a storefront establishment– it is neither dirty or ugly.
I took a chance based on a Groupon deal — I had avoided salons for a while– letting my hair grow until I was sure of what I wanted.
I have been very pleased with both color and cut– Michelle is great to work with and is a talented stylist. Prices are extremely reasonable for NYC,
My first visit we had issue with color being a bit too light but Michelle stayed and fixed it.

I needed to get a late afternoon/​early evening hair appointment for New Year’s Eve and everything in my area was booked… until I saw this place on Lifebooker for a reasonably priced blowout.
I walked in for my appointment and they were busy but took me right away. It’s a small place, but totally fine.
Joel (spelling?) did my hair and he was AMAZING. He was really attentive and listened to my requests (my hair is a messy situation so I’m very specific about what I want). I showed him a picture of a blowout I once got a little while ago to give him an example of how I want to look and he said «I can do that, but make it better,» AND HE DID! He was friendly, hilarious, and kept up conversation the whole time to make my experience there a good one. I would definitely go back.
PS– I took a flyer with their regular price information and it’s very affordable, especially for the Murray Hill area.
