I hope this place stays a secret because it’s amazing. The tortas are all fantastic — especially the chorizo y huevos. The coffee is good, too! The store itself is adorable, and the agua frescas are amazing. Definitely worth a visit!

Was looking around online for a place to buy chorizo and ended up running into this small cozy shop. So glad I did, I ended up trying their carnitas torta which was great. It’s a tiny shop but offers a variety of mexican goods from dried chilies, aguas frescas, snacks(love rancheritos) to books and hats. Behind the counter you’ll find oaxaca cheese, chorizo among other refrigerated items. Theres a small selection of tortas and drinks to choose from, all of which sound delicious, gonna try the ham and oaxaca cheese next time. At the time I stopped by I was greeted by a gentleman behind the counter by the name of Gee, he was super kind and totally made me feel right at home. Speaking of the shop, it was super clean, cozy, organized and had a great atmosphere.

I wish I loved the flavor or size of the $ 8 Queso Oaxaca Torta(Vegetarian)(Oaxaca cheese, avocado, refried beans, caramelized onion, watercress and green salsa.) more, because the staffer was so friendly and this place is stocked with great stuff. That said, the $ 3.50 Esquites de Mercado $ 3.50(Shaved local corn, queso fresco, mayo, chili powder and lime.) was pretty great, as was their ginger agua fresca.

Soy fan because their stuff is pretty legit. Never saw café de olla in this city before(though I wish they had a super sweet option, most traditional), and their donuts are very much like the ones I remember from Mexico City cafes. As for their lunch menu, they build on top of typical Mexican plates like tortas with subtly integrated local elements like bbq/caramelized red onion sauce — at least that’s my interpretation of their style. The point is the food is really good! The chilaquiles in a cup seemed curious to me and could use more salsa, but tasty nonetheless. You’ll get a side of salty fried totopos(good stuff) so tip: ask for the actually-hot salsa(green or red) There’s a myriad of other items such as chocolate, snacks, brevages, and kitchen gear to soak in home-made family style Mexican food culture — honoring their name, Misc. They even sell Rancheritos(best chips ever)! Good job! p. s. I’m usually pretty harsh to Mexican food places so this is more of a 4-and-half stars.

I don’t typically eat Tortas, but this place has become my go-to lunch spot for the best Mexican Tortas in all of NYC! There is something special about the mix of ingredients in the Ham and Cheese Torta(Jamon Queso Oaxaca). I think I particularly like the Oaxaca cheese — which isn’t too salty and has a nice consistency and texture, oh heck, I like everything about it — the black beans, avocado, ham, tomatoes, and lettuce! There is also a great selection of general store items originating from Mexico, along with Mexican candies! I’m originally from Southern California, where I remember getting my daily dose of sweets from the ice cream truck. It’s great to see such availability in this store.

Miscelanea is probably my favorite new spot of 2015. The aesthetic of this place is insanely cool, and the food isn’t too bad either. The queso Oaxaca torta with caramelized onions is to die for, as are the chilquiles and all of the aguas frescas. G, the owner, is probably one of the nicest guys you’ll meet. I’m here at least once a week, if not more, to get my Mexican fix!

This store has everything you need for your mexican cravings. Not only do they have great to-go food like tortas, esquites, chilaquiles and home made aguas frescas but also they have amazing products like mole and salsa verde to take home. Been here to buy Oaxaca cheese and blue toritllas among other things and I am hooked with the good service and delish products. Definitely coming back.

I was hosting a party looking to make authentic tacos and wanted to get a few ingredients. I talked to the person at the store, told him what I was planning and asked him if he had corn tortillas, a good cheese, and salsa for the tacos. He spent a good deal of time giving me advice and showing me some of the stuff he had, such as fresh corn tortillas, queso oaxaca(a stringy, mozzarella-like cheese), and some salsas. I wound up taking a pound and a half of tortillas home along with a pound of cheese, some salsas, and chorizo. When I cooked my «test tortilla», I put some of the strands of cheese on it, and folded it up so it melted inside the tortilla. I took a bite, immediately forgot I didn’t put any meat on there, and wound up finishing it — it was delicious. All of the people at the party loved the tacos and had nothing but good things to say regarding the tortillas, cheese, and chorizo. Super nice person working the counter, clean shop, and fresh ingredients — I’ll have to try their tortas next time.

Amazing little mexican spot, great take out, hard to find mexican sodas(boing, sidral, penafiel…) and great coffee with horchata. Totally recommended!

Listen up, guys– when I told people I was moving from SoCal to NYC, they warned me, «You’ll never have good Mexican food in New York. That’s the only thing they don’t have.» I didn’t really believe it, but after trying multiple«Mexican» restaurants I had to accept the cold, hard truth… UNTIL!!! I stumbled upon Miscelanea. I knew it was the real deal when I saw tortilla presses and jamaica through the windows. The food is phemomenal. You can’t get more authentic carnitas or Mexican chorizo, unique aguas frescas, or more delicious coconut macaron cookies. This place reminds me of all the family vacations we took to Mexico when I was younger. The shop is super clean, all the employees/owners are very friendly, and they sell some pretty cool apparel and gift items(i bought a pretty sick lime juicer here and it changed my life). Please, check this place out. Keep the only authentic Mexican place in Manhattan alive. ¡viva miscelanea!

I almost don’t want to review this place so it doesn’t get discovered but it deserves it. Beautiful, bright Mexican grocery store in the East Village with INCREDIBLE food and agua frescas. Come to look at the Mexican treats and but stay for the food. The carnitas torta was outstanding! Layers of flavor starting with the incredible bread, and including delicious beans, perfectly cooked carnitas and cilantro. The tortas come with pickled vegetables and homemade corn tortilla chips. I also tried the watermelon basil agua fresca which was fresh and delicious. The service was so friendly and helpful. This place is a hole in the wall so you will have to take your food to go, but if you’re impatient like me there are a few benches outside on which you can eat your meal. I am SOHAPPY I discovered this place.

I really love this place. The sandwiches and sides are great, and atmosphere is aesthetic and inspired. I split a carnitas and Oaxaca torta with my friend, and we also had an excellent side of chilequiles. I’d never had them before, but they’re basically like nachos, which have attained God-like powers. There’s a small bench area out front, and if you can snag a table, you’ve pretty much got the perfect lunch situation.

Carnitas torta was absolutely delicious, and the guy behind the counter(perhaps the owner?) was kind enough to give me a small chocolate bar for having to wait(some sort of technical difficulties in the kitchen). Iced coffee with horchata was a little sweeter than I had expected but still good. Lots of cool looking products that will be great stocking stuffer/hostess gifts, and I’ll be back soon for more sandwiches!

It’s a great place; a little Mexican grocery selling high-quality items, plus home-made sandwiches. I’ve only been there once, but am already in love! The shelves teem with dried chiles, fancy salsas and Mexican staples like canned jalapeños, and the cooler has some Mexican sodas(no Jarritos, though) and some nice homemade drinks. The real attraction is the sandwich counter in the back. Plan on getting it to go; there is no place to sit. There are 4 kinds of sandwiches; I opted for the egg and chorizo, which was wonderful, except for the iceberg lettuce. I like the idea of leafy greens, but if iceberg lettuce is the only vegetable on my sandwich, I’d rather have no vegetable at all. Maybe they could experiment with some other greens. They have a great marketing idea: matchbooks! Free matchbooks, with the store name on them. You used to seem them everywhere, but nobody has matchbooks anymore! Another reason to love them. I hope they stay forever.

Miscelanea New York by High Class to High Lifes(ig: @highclasstohighlifes) After a lesson in pronouncing Oaxaca properly(WA-HA-CA), and then foolishly ordering it in what sounded like mangled Chinese, I went with the Queso Oaxaca torta. When in doubt, cheese. The torta was delicious. I give it a ten. The proportion of the cheese, bean, and avocado was just right. The choice between meat and no meat usually only goes one way for me but today was a new day. No meat sweats here! This was a vegetarian friendly option that I do not regret, and will definitely be back for again! Read my full review and see the lunch menu here:

Absolutely a new outstanding hidden gem… to the Authentic Mexican patron The quality and variety of product Miscelanea has to offer is just exquisite! This small quaint little Mexican ‘general store’ has a variety of beverages, coffee drinks, food menu, and authentic Mexican products. Key word: AUTHENTIC, from imported dish rags, to molcajetes, to Mexican candy, to spices and herbs! Can’t stress the authenticity of everything enough. Growing up with ALL of these products takes me back to the homeland. Thank you Miscelanea, and welcome to the neighborhood! Definitely recommended!

Great little authentic Mexican general store. They have all the quintessential Mexican products but ones you cannot find everywhere including candies, salsas, chocolate, and fresh tortillas and cheeses! They also serve what looks like an amazing lunch menu until 4 I believe and they bottle their own delicious agua frescas. I can’t wait to keep coming here again and again
