LOVE this place for so many reasons. It’s the only place on the Upper West Side that offers curry and ramen. Prices are very reasonable. Delivery is FAST even though we are 20 blocks away. Food is always piping hot and fresh and overall pretty good. Super friendly service — the lady who answers the phone knows who I am as soon as I tell her my address, knows what I order(tonkatsu ramen tonight?), feels bad when I call later than usual because she doesn’t want me to work too much, and sometimes even sneaks in a free ice cream dessert. Who doesn’t want a little love after getting home late after a long day?

For your money, you can’t do better than this place… but whether you get what you pay for… that’s up for debate. Probably of course lots of okay food cheap. I go for the bento box — usually tempura — which comes with a soup, seaweed salad, California roll, shumai rice and your meal. And it’s stacked. For $ 15 you never want to eat again. But I end up with odge. And for some reason… I’m a little hesitant to try their regular«real» sushi(since we all know Cali rolls are imitation). Just… not sure why. I stick to the cooked stuff here. But I have only done take out here — very good. Timely, and nice staff.

I went with a vegetable tempura bento & got them to change the California roll to a salmon roll. When it came out, pretty much everything was the same temperature… Warm. I was kinda turned off at the salmon not being cold & I lost my appetite. I barely ate anything. My friend ordered tempura udon & said it was nice but she didn’t eat much either. I won’t go back when there are much better options nearby.

This place was disgusting, please skip it. The waitress was nice but the fish I had wasn’t fresh and besides the roll with the granny apples, it was was disgusting. I don’t know why their tamago tasted of vinegar… ew…and they didn’t serve me the sushi I ordered, they left some out. But I guess that’s a good thing since the fish wasn’t so great. I’m guessing the bellhop at the hotel gets referal points for pointing guests towards their establishment??? Also! Sushi is by piece and not 2 per order, which I’m used to. Nevermind, not cheap after all =T

I’ve always walked by this little spot and never stopped to take a look, until I bought a $ 15 for $ 30 of food discount from Google Offers. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the friendly waiter and I first realized that the dining area was pretty small but cozy. I decided to ordered the Shrimp Tempura Bento Box with an extra roll of Shrimp Tempura and a Salmon Teriyaki for my girlfriend. I really liked the Bento box overall. It came with two dumplings, three shrimp tempuras, some rice, some noodles, and a small miso soup. Everything tasted very good and I was satisfied with what I ordered. However, not everything was perfect. The breading of the shrimp tempuras, while tasty, were a bit oily and just took away from the sweet taste of the shrimp. All in all, it was a pretty decent experience. The sushi was not mushy and had a good texture. The prices did throw me off just a bit. The total came in at $ 39.05, and with the Google offer, I ended paying just $ 9(after first paying $ 15, so a total of $ 24.05). If I’m ever in the neighborhood again and get a craving for sushi, I’ll probably stop by and get 1 or 2 rolls.

Around these parts(the UWS) it aint easy to find a descent sushi spot. BUT I THINK I JUSTMIGHTHAVE. I like to give a place a couple of chances before I leave a review if they are in my ‘hood. I have only ordered a couple different rolls from Obento, after stumbling upon the restaurant accidentally on a detour one day. But so far everything has been tasty as hell! damn! — Large rolls — Great prices(average roll $ 5) — Fresh — SUPER fast delivery — Incredibly polite staff I rolled by last night to pick up some take out, and had my order within 5 minutes. Shout out to the gentleman taking a break– stopped his dinner to tell me I was beautiful. Bawwwwwwww, way to make me have to come back again and tip more. LAWL

Do not eat at this place. The pork ramen had several pieces of bone in the broth, large pieces of pork fat and the quality was nothing better than a typical bag of ramen noodles that you find in the grocery store. Also, I got the«New Orleans Jazz Roll,» which was far from fresh. I threw it out after one bite. It was gross. All in all, I just dropped $ 25 on two dishes that weren’t even edible.

I went here because I was in search of a beer and a table. I was going to sit and scribble in my little notebook, giving bitter dirty looks toward couples. I had given up on finding a place with a pool table, and thought writing funny bitter stuff would be just fine. I ordered a Sapporo or an Kirin(I honestly don’t know the difference) and sat there, intense on my alone-ness. it was a pretty cute place, even if a bit too bright. And although i did not want food, I asked to see a menu. I must say, I am quite impressed with it! It has all the traditional items, such as Raman, Udon, Tempura, several types of Tariyaki, most kinds of sushi, and a nice dessert selection. It has a larger then normal vegetarian selection, and curries, too! Also, the staff was nice, and i struck up a new friendship with a lovely woman who also spends large amounts of time scribbling. I will go back when I am hungry.

This is one of those great little places that I love ordering when I’m craving a nice Japanese meal but don’t want fuss. I love the bento box – comes with a TON of food, enough to share, and the katsu is fantastic. The dinner katsu box comes with katsu, excellent sauce, shrimp shumai, two kinds of seaweed salad, miso soup, a 6-piece california roll and rice. a TON of food. sure, the katsu will be a little cold upon arrival, but who cares when it’s that much food? one of the better places on the Upper Upper West Side. the restaurant itself is cute and nice for lunch, too.

*** delivery review *** I ordered off GrubHub because I liked their wide selection — still, definitely an asset of Obento. However, by the time we got our food, both our chicken katsu and teriyaki salmon were cold. The katsu was classic katsu, and we got double the sauce than the chicken in the order. The dinner bento is a decent deal. Their shumai are particularly fried. The seaweed side was nice. Truly wasn’t blown away and was a bit bummed about the temperature.

3.25 — minus a little bit for forgetting something and having to bring it back a little later. For some reason, I have been skeptical to order Sushi anywhere on the Upper West Side since I moved to NYC. Part of it has to do with the fact that there are so many mediocre sushi joints and its hard to find the one that is your«go to.» A friend and veteran of the UWS said this place was pretty good so we ordered delivery, including sushi. We only ordered a couple rolls to go along with the rest of the food and they were pretty good and reasonably priced. Some places around charge over $ 5 for simple rolls. Obento is a little less and appeared to be quality fish. For the rest of the meal we split Beef Negamaki which is thinly sliced beef wrapped around scallions. This was the winner of the night. The wasabi pork shumi were little dumplings that were pretty tasty. For me entrée, I picked the Pork Katsu-Curry. I butterflied piece of pork lightly breaded and fried, served with a thick curry sauce and rice. I had never tried Japanese curry and while it was tasty, i wouldn’t go back for it again. The Spicy tuna roll was also good, and fresh tasting. I don’t know if im ready for sashimi here, but maybe. I haven’t had many japanese dishes aside from sushi, temura and a few others, so it was nice to try them here. I would order from them again.

Ordered delivery the other day and this was the only place on the UWS that served ramen with tonkotsu broth. This is the traditional kinda milky broth make with prok bones. The portion didn’t seem that much when it came in it’s container but man, was i STUFFED after. The ramen is prob out of a packet but served it’s purpose. The broth was definitely hearty on a cold day. Neither would be comparable to Ippudo or Sategaya but hey I was home and it was $ 9. I got the roast pork ramen and the pork was definitely stellar. There was good marbly fat in the meat which made it absolutely fall apart in your month. I could have eating 2 servings of the pork. Also ordered a side of veggie tempura which was crunchy even with delivery. A hefty portion of 8 pieces which included broccoli and green beans. Definitely going to be a client through the winter.

I had veggie sushi and it was fine — not spectacular, not awful. My date ordered the shrimp and loved it. Service was kind of slow, especially with the re-filling of water, which is a pet peeve of mine. It especially irked me because we were the only people there at the time. The sticky tables are gross — it’s a simple thing to clean your tables. I probably wouldn’t try it again, there are plenty of other cleaner sushi places.

Portions are out of control! I got the Obento Delight sushi lunch special today in an attempt to wean myself off of Jack’s $ 1.99 sushi lunch special. As expected, it was substantially better tasting. And although I was really getting after the spicy tuna roll when I was ordering, it came with TONS of sashimi… Imitation Crab, Salmon, Eel, Tuna, and two kinds of whitefish I couldn’t identify because I’m not sophisticated in the least. All tasted good. True to form, I stupidly opted for a Diet Coke instead of the Miso Soup(don’t. do. that), which smelled delicious floating over from my neighbor’s table. A word on the«bored-looking» sushi chef… I thought he was adorable(call me). Recommended!

I was truly hoping this place was a noodle bar with a side of sushi. Mark my words, I was wrong. LOL. I ordered a Nabesomething udon. It was a hodgepodge udon broth soup with chunks of salmon, chicken, poached egg, onions, shitakes and a sole shrimp tempura. The serving was rather generous. I’ve yet to visit a Japanese establishment that served an udon THAT size. It was fine tasting but nothing unusual. The udon filled me up, big time. Don’t think I’ll need my usual cookies and milk before bed. In addition, as an appetizer, I ordered cheap cheap cheap $ 2.50 per piece tuna and salmon sushi: my usual«staying safe and checking it out» fare. The sushi chef nailed it out of the park with really fresh fish little rice. I’d actually like to try this place for their lunch menu. If their sushi is as good as I’ve experienced it, their lunch take-out and sit down sushi orders must be jammed pack. A few things that bothered me were: the sticky tables(the kind that doesn’t clear off easily), the tacky plastic food on display and the bored looking sushi chef. This is a tiny place so probably not a good idea for huge groups.

I’d totally give it 4 stars if the service was better. The sushi is really fresh and the black miso cod is delicious. However, the service is really subpar. I felt like the waitress was rude to us. She obnoxiously smirked for no reason twice as we were ordering and then took forever to bring us tea — the first and the second time around. Since the quality of the food is is good I’d recommend takeout.

Not bad at all. Tried the soba noodles(excellent, big hearty bowl) and the beef bento dinner box. Not a bad deal, although the beef was a bit fatty. Reasonably priced, and open late on a Sunday, too! A bit small, but certainly pleasant place to run into on a late night. Only qualm is the cleanliness of the water glasses — hard to tell, but seemed clean?

The sushi is good and cheap. The main meals are hearty and tasty. They also make fried ice cream, which I «heart».
