Salon West

I have been going to Salon West for over a year. Unfortunately, the grays are starting to be a problem so I now have to get my highlights done every 7 – 8 weeks rather than when I feel like it – aging, sigh. As a general matter I don’t have the patience to sit in a salon for a couple of hours but this place make it a lot more palatable. Its small and friendly– owned and operated by a woman and most of the staff has been working there for many years. They have early appointments so that my appointment doesn’t interfere with the day. They genuinely care about whether I am comfortable and ultimately satisfied. We consult on the color, lighter this time? darker this time? And if I have ever regretted going in one direction or another, they will redo a week later at no extra cost. They bring me tea, give me a place to set up my laptop and I no longer feel like I’m wasting my time in a salon. In addition, compared to most other salons, this place is reasonably priced – I won’t go so far as to say its cheap but I don’t feel like I’m getting ripped off. Only down side is that sometimes the small size of the location can feel overcrowded and I have to play a bit of musical chairs.

I usually don’t give 5 stars only when I get an amazing and excellent service. When I made the reservation over the phone, the lady was polite and professional. When I came, I was seated right away and my stylist took care of me carefully. This salon gives personal touch and make you feel like you been friends for awhile, but I am a very new
customer.
I walked out of there very pleased with the result.
I would definitely recommend this to all my friends and people looking for above average treatment and service.

I’m writing this on behalf of my wife who doesn’t use a computer. She found her colorist to be incompetent as her end result was nothing even close to what she asked for (MUCH LIGHTER THAN ASKED FOR). She has been mortified as to how she looks. She also feels she paid top dollar for an extremely poor job. She would not recommend this establishment at all!

This is the 1^st review I ever wrote, so please bear with me,
Let me start by saying I’ve had highlights done on my hair for over 30 years (I guess that makes me old). I often travel over an hour just to go to someone who I trust. I went to this local salon after seeing a couple of people at my nail salon who had coloring that would satisfy me.
This was absolutely the worst job that has ever been done on my hair! Instead of dirty blond highlights that I walked into the shop with, I ended up with 100% of my hair bleached light blond (almost white). Match this with my fair complexion, I almost look like an albino! The girl performed numerous processes that I have NEVER received. These are 3 hours and $ 250 I’ll never see again.
Unfortunately I’m a computer illiterate so I didn’t take advantage of many of these negative reviews. I wish I had.

I went to Salon West to have my grays blended (I have about 15%-20% or grays, largely on the sides of my hair). I worked with Ebony, who did a terrific job. We discussed what I was looking to do, and what I didn’t want (I hate when I go for a simple gray coverage/​blending, and end up looking like a Ken doll). She was friendly and knowledgable, as was the owner of the salon, who Ebony brought over for a consult before we got started. We began on time and finished in a timely fashion, and the result looked like exactly what I was hoping for. The salon itself is a cute little spot, and the staff overall were very welcoming. The place had a very nice vibe, and the work they did for me was excellent. No complaints.

I have been going to Santa at Salon West for a few years now and I can’t imagine entrusting my locks to anyone else! She is wonderful! She listens to her clients, remembers your requests, follows up with you and is a pleasure to work with. This salon is a hidden gem and Santa is definitely one if its stars! Highly recommend.

I have been going to this Salon for almost six years. They are fantastic! Shaniqua does my color and cut, but all of the support staff are exceptional. People literally stop me on the street to ask where I get my hair done :)) I travel from a Westchester suburb to this salon because of the expert service I receive there and I highly recommend Salon West to anyone!

I can only comment on Shaniqua, who did my highlights/​color revision. She’s amazingly talented, I’m a midrange brunette who has had more dye jobs than the multicolored horse in the Wizard of Oz and I was trying to gear my hair into more of a dark blonde/​light brown groove. She really pretty much nailed it, though the color on top has some orangey red values which I’m not thrilled with. Still, she got MUCH closer to what I wanted than anyone I’ve ever been to, and I’ve tried Arrojo and about 7 other places in NYC and Chicago. I’m definitely going back.

So, after posting this review– not as a personal jab, but as a caution to other people in the market for salon services– the owner contacted me, and the conversation was as follows: (Ahem) Jennifer phoned me on a Friday afternoon after I posted my review– not to be concerned and helpful, but to be snippy & brief. Instead of listening to me, she cut me off as much as possible, and insisted that I hadn’t communicated my wishes to them. She stated that they were under the impression that I wanted to go darker, toward my natural color… UMM. Hello? My hair is very blonde? Why would I want to go darker during the Summer?! I let that slide. I apologized for having to write the review– I really despise writing bad reviews. And, I thanked her for her call. In her snippy, condescending, holier than thou way, she continued to talk down to me and cut me off, in her manner of insisting she could rectify the situation. She kept repeatedly asking when I’d like to come back for her to «re-​do» my hair. She stated that herself and another stylist were pros in «color» for 15 years… But my thought is; «This lady is MAD at me… So why would I allow her to touch my hair?!» She’d probably make it green with purple polka dots on purpose! I wanted to cut my losses. Even though I stated that I felt uncomfortable coming back, after I’d already given it two shots, she kept urging me to book an appointment. She basically continued to talk over me until the end of the call, be hoity-​toity, and hang up. Oh well…
I’m changing my review to 1 star. I wish it could be ZERO, (C’mon Unilocal!?) due to the immaturity of the owner, and her unprofessional way of trying to ease the situation. I’m sure she would feel the same way if someone failed to fix her car twice, and then begged her to come back a third time. Uh, NO THANK YOU! I’m now noticing that my review isn’t their only bad one… there are many more! So, why the pressure on me?! (I’ll take it as a complement that I’m a good writer) She kept asking what she could do to make it right, and well… If I were her, I would have offered the customer’s money back. That’s just good business! To all business people including myself– If you do not want to get possibly negative reviews, don’t put yourself on Unilocal!!!
PS– If you look closely, it looks like she comments on everyone’s negative reviews– and even got personal on mine… SMH! What a shame to do business this way. She should turn customers away and make future appointments. Clients will wait for GOOD SERVICE. It should be quality, not quantity, people!

Love this place. I have tried a few places in the city and disliked them all except this one. Seriously, at one salon the stylist told me my hair was ugly curly and I should straighten it everyday. Umm… thanks?
They cut my big frizzy head of hair very well at Salon West and the color they do is always amazing. Jennifer usually cuts my hair but I have also had it done by Sali and just loved the results. My blowout always looks incredible and I get so many compliments! I feel the price is fair for the amazing job they do on your hair here. Pay them a visit and I’m sure you will not be disappointed.

So I initially came here as a hair model for a stylist who did a very poor job. The salon called me back after finding out how disappointed I was and offered to have my hair redone by one of their top colorist. At first I was apprehensive to go back, but took the chance and I’m ecstatic that I did! Ariel fixed my color and did an amazing job! He listened to my gripes about the color and even fixed the parts I said I was willing to let grow out! He was meticulous in the best possible way. Ariel was constantly checking that the color was lifting the way he wanted it to and he made sure I was happy with the way things were coming out. He really wanted me to leave a happy customer.
Ladies YOU NEED TO COME SEE ARIEL FOR YOUR COLOR! He did an amazing job on my now ombré hair!
I was also fortunate enough to receive a cut with Iryna on my last visit. I really loved what Iryna did. She was also very meticulous and gave her opinion while continuing to check with me to make sure that I was pleased with the outcome. She used thinning shears on my hair, which I had never had done before and it made the world of a difference of my big big hair.
I also have to send a huge thank you to Shaniqua who was very professional throughout my experience and apologized for the other stylists’ previous dye job. She did an excellent job of making me feel like an appreciated customer.

and since they’re in my neighborhood I figured I would give them a try. Just had my hair colored (root touch up) by Axhere– she was great! She offered to put a few highlights in to see if that would help make my greys look less noticeable. My hair looks great, will be going back.

After a consultation with Tina, during which I told her my hair history and she looked at my hair and offered suggestions, I decided on single process color to make my hair red. When I came in a few days later for my coloring appointment, she put color on the roots, then mixed and applied color for the ends. After it was washed out, I could clearly see that the roots were much lighter than the ends. I pointed this out and Tina told me not to worry, they could easily correct it. She told the assistant to put something on just the roots (I’m not sure what it was). Later when she washed it off, the roots matched the ends, BUT there was a dark brown, almost black, band of color about an inch wide starting about a half inch from the scalp. Clearly whatever they put on, they were sloppy with and put on beyond the lighter root area. At this point I assume Tina was out of ideas because she had Shaniqua take over. She told me she would add highlights to break up the dark band and to give it a couple of weeks because the band would fade. I didn’t want highlights because I didn’t want the maintenance that comes with them, but she promised these would be very subtle. They were… Shaniqua did a good job on the highlights, they looked very natural, however, I could still see the dark band, although it was not quite as obvious as it originally was. She told me she couldn’t do anything else that day and to come back in two weeks (free of charge) if the band hadn’t faded and I needed any adjustment. I was not offered any discount despite the fact that I walked out (after $ 200 and FOUR HOURS for what was supposed to be single process) with hair that should have been an embarrassment to them. They did give me a free shampoo and conditioner. In addition, the price I was charged was more expensive than what Tina quoted me in the consultation… when I pointed this out Tina said they needed to use 5 tubes of color. Whatever, I didn’t even put up a fight. I was mentally exhausted by this point. Of course, the band did not fade, so I went back in two weeks later and Shaniqua added A LOT more highlights and put a clear glaze just on the dark band. This further broke up the band, but I realized when I got home that I can still see it in places which means I will need to pay a lot of money for corrective color at a different salon sometime soon. I wanted to give them a chance to make it right, but they failed. The entire staff is very nice, I was treated very courteously, and I believe they tried their best to fix it (which Is why I actually tipped well on both visits despite the results), but it seems they lacked the expertise to do so. On the plus side, the blow out, and Shaniqua’s highlighting skills, were very good. But I won’t be returning. After 2 visits my hair still doesn’t look good.

I went here for the first time right before my wedding. I had an appointment for highlights and a cut with Shaniqua. She is absolutely awesome! She is amazing with colors and gave me the best cut I’ve ever had. I also got an amazing brow threading while I was waiting for my color to set. The place is a little hectic and crowded, but everybody is very nice and I had a pleasant experience. I would highly recommend them
