They are closed a lot of the time when it says they should be open, always call to see if they are going to be open that day and what time there closing !

Meh is definitely the right word! I get that prices might be a little higher because of the area, but $ 4.99 for a two pack of metal hooks is nuts, especially when the shelf price, WITH the item name, says $ 3.49. «The price is whatever it rings up at» is not a great policy when your store is just a wreck! If you’ve marked up the prices, mark up the shelf labels, or at least make sure everything is on the right peg. I was not greeted or offered help until my pass back through the store, and had to scoot my items closer to the checkout girl until she looked away from her cell phone long enough to begin being bothered to ring me up. Next time I’ll walk a little further to the 8^th avenue location.

Worst experience ever. I went in to get some keys made and they ignored me to help every other customer in the store, including two who came in after me. The customers were all men – white men. They were all treated respectfully. The clerk had finally turned to me when more guys came in and he literally walked away from me as I was handing him my keys to talk to them. Finally the other guy took my keys, which sucked because I realized the first guy was not helping, but harassing and following the African American guys, clearly thinking they were possible shoplifters. I would have walked out except they had my keys. Even when the guy was ringing me up he kept stopping to try and keep an eye on the black guys, it was so racist and awful. And then when I got home, none of the keys work! Six useless keys, one useless store.

Great customer service and stock.
I had to buy some basic gardening supplies during my lunch break, and since I didn’t want to be wandering around visiting hardware stores, I emailed Scheman’s in the morning asking if they had potting soil etc. They emailed back promptly, and then when I went over there a helpful worker took me to their gardening section and went through all the tools with me. On the way through the store I saw that they have everything you’d want from a hardware store.
Much better than a schlep to Home Depot.

I cannot speak to their selection, because my paint and hardware needs are usually pretty basic. However, I can speak to their wonderful staff. I am no handy woman, but every time I go into Scheman’s with a project in mind, their staff helps me pick the best supplies for the job and then gives me a tutorial on how to complete it. I never feel like I’m being judged and am encouraged to ask questions. I live in NJ, but this store is by my office, and I’d rather carry a gallon of paint home on the PATH from this store, than buying it close by because of their service.

A great hidden gem in the middle of the Garment District. You can get just about anything here, hardware-wise. They’re old-school New York. Very mom & pop. I love it.
Decent prices, fast service… What more can you ask for? And they make keys while-you-wait. It comes in handy more often than you’d think.

Just picked up a bunch of random stuff here. They have a wide selection of really anything you can think of. Prices are a bit on the high side, but given the location, I guess it can be justified. Dudes who worked here were super friendly and really helpful. I’ll definitely be back!

Its pretty freaking handy having a hardware store downstairs from your office.
Temperature complaints? They have portable heaters and fans. Suddenly a little darker in the office? All kinds of light bulbs. Boss forgot his keys at home… again? Head downstairs and they’ll make you a copy. Last minute office renovation and you need materials… fast? Boom. Ask Richard and Andy, they’ll help you through it… if
they can’t get it they will at least point you in the right direction.
Richard and the rest of the guys really go above and beyond to help out when I’m in the store and are always available by email to answer any questions or concerns I might have.
Note. they aren’t really around on the weekends (they might be on saturday but not entirely sure). then again no one else in the area is either.
