I’ve walked past Slope Café a million times, and today, wanting to mix things up and try something new, I walked in and ordered the Curry Chicken. The gal at the cash register was a total doll — she hooked me up with plantains, rice and beans, cabbage and curry chicken, and a whole lot of it too! My husband and I split it for lunch, and at just under $ 10, it felt like a great deal. The food was good — really good. Not Per Se, ladies and gentleman, but solid, and between the sweet smile of the lady inside the café to the sweet sound of Bob Marley while I waited less than 4 minutes for a delicious lunch, I was a happy camper. I can see how this place is jostling to find its place in the Park Slope food scene. It’s right by the train station, which would make it an ideal place for quick in and out coffee/bagel action — but they’re more chill and relaxed than that. At the same time, it serves these great, home style entrees, but it’s a café and doesn’t look like a place where you’d have a full sit down meal. So I think that might be one of the reasons it hasn’t hit its sweet spot yet. Regardless, a really solid lunch at a great price with little wait time made this freelance writer very happy indeed. If you want a chill taste of delicious, local Caribbean food, check out Slope Café — you’ll be glad you did.
