I’ve tried almost everything in this restaurant and I’ve always been glad I did. Great place to go with friends but also by yourself.

I loved the cornbread and Ginger shots. The veggie entrees, however, are not worth the price tag for anyone who can keenly shop for organic groceries and boil water. Still, a healthy option and kind staff, although service was a bit slow. I recommend trying the lunch specials, which are mon-fri, only(I visited on a Sunday and missed out on the tahini teriyaki sandwich). Wish I tried the cauliflower soup. Will consider a second trip, but with so many amazing options in SOHO /Greenwich Village, this won’t be at the top of my list.

A group of my friends and I shared a meal last night. The service was leisurely yet good. The meals were healthy and enjoyed by all. The main reason for this review is the waiter was very unprofessional about the check’s gratuity. He could not accurately calculate at tip and total so he came back to the table and abruptly advised that the gratuity we left was less than what double tax would be; and that tips are usually more than double tax. This enlightened revelation would have been meaningful if I had not left him almost 24%(regretfully). The waiter’s rude and extremely unprofessional in the manner in which he chose to confront me and I hope that ownership and management address his position when addressing customers. I will not dine at Souen Soho again due to this unpleasant interaction. Please train employees how to respond to customers appropriately; and how to calculate tip and total.

Can they be any more rude and unwelcoming??? We are customers fir god sake!!! And why do we have to pay 20% tip for this extremely awful service??? They did not even gave us a good explanation about the foods we ordered, I’m still a little shocked because of the owners manner! She was so rude to us

Okay, got converted to this place. A $ 15 meal in New York that feeds your stomach and is healthy and serves organic wine(aka alcohol) is a place to go. Soho location is also far better, bit disappointed with their curry but this is not a curry place so why would you order curry. This is also not a seafood specialty restaurant so why would you order seafood. Pesto dishes are yum. Also, maze salmon rice– ace. Pps– should’ve known the steamed cod was extremely blend.

Nice healthy macrobiotic restaurant which is mostly vegan, with some fish dishes offered. Cuisine is Japanese food. Every souen has a slightly different menu. This one in soho has a variety of appetizers, entrees, sushi and desserts. No Ramen(east village location has a Ramen menu). I enjoyed the steamed dumplings(really tiny though), curry vegetables with brown maze rice(loved this) and shared a pumpkin coconut cake for dessert. Everything was nice and light! Nothing was too salty or greasy or sweet. There are daily specials too so look out for that. Gluten free items are clearly marked. Service was great and attentive. The ambience was really peaceful & zen. I felt that I had a very mindful meal at souen. Definitely a place for healthy, macrobiotic vegan food that does not rely on salt, oil or grease to dress up the food.

I’ve been going to Souen for decades. They consistently keep the food quality at a high level and offer wild fish and organic produce every day. It’s staff reinforces Souen’s warm atmosphere, which is rare in the Macro community, where ‘attitude’ is the norm. Years ago their prices were considered high, but the surrounding economy has finally caught up and now prices have actually become quite reasonable. Check out this NY institution!

For the price and quality, this is definitely one of the better health food restaurants in the city. It helps to get a reservation in advance(like everywhere else in NYC). You could spend 3x the money at Blossom café for mediocre vegan food or get roughly the same quality here. One of the things lacking here is more«kick» in some of their curry dishes. As the menu hails from some Japanese inspired tastes, the curries are a bit light and if you’re looking for a kick of spice, you won’t find that. The serving staff definitely knows there stuff and can help you navigate the menu depending on your food allergies or preferences.

So nice to find a restaurant that uses high quality ingredients(amen wild fish!) to cook the kind of food(veggies and protein) I would make at home for myself. Healthy, clean, nutritious, well priced, with options for every kind of diet or mood. I might never cook for myself again. Not necessarily my special night out kind-of-place or a place I go for fancy foodie dishes, but definitely my regular go-to for well done staples. AND delivery is super fast and they manage to wrap it so everything stays warm.

My favorite vegan restaurant in New York. There is a lot of variety, and the ingredients are fresh and flavorful. Delivery often comes quickly, and still hot. Could eat here every night

If you try the Maze Rice, and develop a strange blistering rash, don’t be alarmed! It isn’t Souen’s fault. It’s Shiitake Dermatitis. I strayed from my normal Macro Plate with Gluten Free Cornbread to try this dish, and ending up with this condition. If you are unsure of your body’s reaction to Shiitake mushrooms, be sure to have your order cooked well, as this only happens with raw mushrooms.

The macro plate is my fave. Lots of gluten-free options, from sushi to the veggie and rice plates, soup, even desserts! Nice, calming atmosphere and nice servers. The cornbread with apple butter is sooo good!!!(and gluten-free!)

Cold Tuesday eve and looking for something healthy??? We shared the dumplings… interesting flavors, dough more chewy than normal. Inspired veggie curry — with brown rice… looks and tasted very healthy, rather big veggie pieces, but not normal curry flavors coming through, different spices with a little bit of a bite. Pad Thai — onion, carrot, mung bean sprout, scallion, shiitake, broccoli, baked tofu in home-made lime peanut sauce. We decided on noodles… delicious…hit the spot! Pity our waiter wasn’t very helpful, maybe just a bad day…

I wanted one last vegan something before we disembarked from NYC and Souen had the fortune of being within walking distance of our hotel. I placed a pick up order for the broiled tempeh teriyaki sandwich, although the fatty in me truly wanted the deep-fried tempeh option. Effort towards being a «healthy adult» = bummer. The sandwich was indeed massive, layered with fresh greens, tomatoes, sprouts and a smattering of pickle chips so the side. The generous slabs of tempeh were pretty plainly broiled, just as the name would suggest, with a hearty smear of teriyaki-like sauce. It didn’t boast the best taste or consistency(that tempeh funk was pretty noticeable), but hey y’all learn from my mistake, order the tempeh deep-fried, pay the consequences later. Your tastebuds and tummy will thank you. Also, I ate half my sandwich almost immediately after retrieving it, but it had already started to morph into a soggy heap of substance formerly known as bread. I think the pickle juices had seeped into the bread almost immediately, bummer. It wasn’t an offensively bad sandwich, not at all, but if I could do it all over again. .. probably would have ordered something else for my NYC departure meal.

I have walked past this place many times. There is always an awesome aroma coming from here and I wanted to give it a try. The wakame soup was delicious and freshly made. This is a dish I would return for. My main course was the coconut curry shrimp. The dish was lack luster. Served cold, it did not have very good green curry flavor. They did reward the dish, but it still had little flavor. The cod was pretty good, but that too was served cold and needed to be rewarmed. Spice is very close, their food is always spot on. I’ll return there, but I don’t think I’ll stop here again.

Das Souen hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Das Essen ist alles ‘organic’, die Bedienung schnell und freundlich. Die Einrichtung in warmen Farbtönen schafft eine entspannte Stimmung.
