first visit to this salon was horrible. I had an appointment with Gabby and she arrived 2 hours late. i was being serviced with a full weave including a crown(closure). I bought almost 10 ounces of hair with me to the salon and i only have 8 tracks in my hair. What happened to the rest of my hair? there are several large gaps/rows of braids not covered with tracks. during braiding my hair was pulled so tightly i had post nasal drip and achy shoulders and upper back pain. I now have raised bumps in areas of my scalp from the braids being to tight. The chair hydraulics was broken so it was very uncomfortable sitting in the chair during the install. definitely not work $ 525. I am highly disappointed and surprised since the reviews I read praised her work. Unfortunately that was not my experience. thanks for letting me share my experience.

Styles New York is a small, conveniently located and classy salon in the heart of NYC. They provide hair care for both men and women. All the stylists and barbers there are friendly, and clearly skilled in their speciality. I travel from the border of the Northeast Bronx down to New York Styles at least once a month to see Khadine. Before I met her, I had all natural, never permed but badly heat and colored damaged hair. She not only nourished my hair back to health, but educated me on how to properly care for my hair. Khadine is well versed in up and coming hair products, companies and trends. Im one of her longest(possibly most indecisive) customers because I’m always looking for a change. In the last seven years, I have had multiple styles ranging from twist-outs, full weave installations and most recently a color change. Khadine has made my hair journey far more bearable in supporting my decisions and fully embracing the idea of customer satisfaction.

I first came here to get my perm cut off, and Sebastian gave me my Big Chop and color. I promptly moved to London, and started my locs there. Upon my return to New York, I returned to Styles and started seeing Pinky. No one does locs like Pinky. Period. I live in Detroit currently(hair capital of the world), and when I need my hair done, I fly in to see Pinky. It’s like that. I’ve referred friends upon friends here, and will continue to do so. The recs are always the same: if you have loose hair, relaxed or otherwise, go see Sebastian. If you have locs, see Pinky. You’ll have no regrets either way. (Also, the assistants are great. I especially love Wadi(sp?). They clean the hell out of your hair, and they’re friendly and hilarious. Some of the humour is very West Indian-specific, but I happen to be of West Indian origin and love it.) LOVE Styles New York!

I’ve been a fan of Gabby’s for a while. I fell in love with her work on Instagram and knew that she was the person to cut my hair for the big chop. I haven’t relaxed my hair in a year and was dying to cut off all the relaxed ends. When I arrived the receptionist took care of me right away. Gabby came over immediately to introduce herself which I loved. Her assistant was even sweeter and did a great job of washing and detangling my hair. I showed Gabby a couple of pictures of haircuts she had done and she made a great recommendation for what would work for me. I must say she is the Michelangelo of haircuts. Never have I had a hairstylist take their time with a cut while providing great conversation. I was on cloud nine when she was done. It was exactly what I wanted. Not too short but not too long and easy to maintain. What can I say but that I will be back in Dec for a coloring. Thank you Gabby for helping this naturalist fall in love with the hair God gave her.

I have been to Styles twice. I followed my stylist Gabi here — she did two weaves for me that were spectacular. I am actually going back in a few weeks so she can take the weave out and give me a trim and some color for the fall. The assistants are always friendly and helpful. They take their time when the wash your hair — and I mean take their TIME. You get a scalp massage and your hair is CLEAN and conditioned by the time they are done. The atmosphere in the salon is fun too — music is playing… people are stopping by. As far as I’m concerned, the customer service is always on point and the experience is great. I travel UP from DC to come here so that’s saying something :-)

I love the location and I love Gabi. She’s a busy person, but she gets it done. I was referred to her by a family member who lives in Georgia. She uses Gabi when Gabi’s down in the ATL. I decided to utilize her and loved how my hair was flowing when I left her chair. The location is perfect for me since I work a few blocks away.

I am not sure about the reviews below, but the customer service has always been fine when I was there. The assistants always smile at me when I arrive, they ask me about hanging up my coat, and offer a robe to wear. Same routine every time I’ve come, even if it hadn’t been a year since my last visit. Kiyah was originally my hairstylist, however after she left to be the main stylist for America’s Next Top Model(and subsequently won 2 Emmys!), she has never returned to Styles. So I follow her to Warren Tricomi in NY/LA, while I also see Carla & Sebastian. Carla is Jada Pinkett-Smith & Alicia Keys stylist, so naturally, she’s a bit of a diva. Fine by me, so am I;-) I love every hairstyle she’s given me, including when I cut all my hair off into a short bob. She is amazing at cutting hair!!! Got so many compliments, including from men! Sebastian is more approachable/friendlier, but to be honest, he doesn’t have the skill set as Kiyah or Carla. He does good hair though, so I would go see him if Carla’s book is filled up. She’s not cheap, so be ready to pay $ 90 for a haircut, and another $ 50 to wash/blow. Yes, beauty pays. My suggestion for anyone of any race/culture that has fine, coiled or curly hair, go see Carla! Your hair is not banging until you do… period!

I felt compelled to write this because If i had listened to the people below I would have passed up a great hair experience! I had been following Gabby(one of the stylists) on instagram and loved her work. A friend of mine who happens to work with her outside of the salon on shoots, raved about her natural hair blow out and cut so I figured I had to see for myself. I was hesitant to go to Styles at first because the reviews below crucified them. But I took a chance and boy was I happy I did. The salon is located on the second floor and is easy to miss. when I walked in I was expecting all types of ratchetness to be happening inside based on the reviews but I was warmly welcomed and promptly given a client gown. I only waited a few minutes before Gabby came over to greet me and did a consult regarding my color and what would work best for my hair type etc. Then she got straight to work. I was dyeing my hair with the cheap store brand boxes and pretty much turned my hair orange after a while. Gabby worked her magic, corrected my color and gave me a nice golden blonde hue plus a trim that had my hair super flowy. + we were chatting it up like we were old pals by the time I left! Overall I had no issues during my appointment. Everyone was friendly, good music was playing, cute guys were coming in/out(they have barbers too), «celebrity» clients were waiting to get their hair done, and I had some great conversations with the stylists there. They do have water and were not yelling at folks for eating a snack if they needed. It was like many other black salons in NY. If you want wine and cheese with your trim. best not come here. But if you want to look great and not pay an arm and a leg definitely go to Styles. I will most definitely be back. Loved the results. This was a classic case of go with your gut and not base your decision solely on Unilocal reviews.

First off my stylist gets a 4.5, but the salon itself is more of a 2. Since I’ve been going here, my hair has gotten much healthier and has noticeably grown. I also love that unlike some stylists, she doesn’t cut off a ton of hair and call it a «trim.» As for salon itself, there are a number of cons: 1) the receptionist is not very personable and considering the prices, she should have much nicer personality 2) the assistants also don’t seem to be very professional and they turnover a lot 3) The area to wash your hair is a bit bootleg. The water pressure sucks and they call«water» when they need to use it. I seriously don’t think they can have three clients getting serviced simultaneously back there. 4) The overall look and feel is not what one would expect given the location and costs. Again, only my stylist keeps me coming back. if she were to leave, so would I. it’s also cool that you can get an afterwork appt during the week though.

So I came to this salon on a Friday afternoon, I was going out that night and my curly weave was a mess! My appointment was with Sebastian at 4:30pm, I sat for 20 mins(and was getting very impatient) when his assistant finally decided to wash me. Since my weave was curly it was a big fuss about if it would tangle, how he would curl it and so on. He said he couldn’t curl or style the weave but he would curl my real hair into spiral curls. The spiral curls didn’t really look like the weave but my hair texture and the weave didn’t match, so I can’t really blame it on him. I do think that he has potential to do great hair and I would go back if I don’t have a weave. I was a little pissed off that I paid $ 65 for a wash and 4 spiral curls. Another weird thing was that they don’t accept credit cards on certain days.
