Best Italian dog-note perfect in every way. They are also the only Italian dog palace that I’ve been to that uses a natural casing hot dog. If there are others I would love to know about them. Dicky Dee’s beats Jimmy Buff by a Jersey mile because of the choice of tube steak. A skinless dog just doesn’t do the whole thing justice.

If you have traveled and lived in as many areas as I have you can appreciate this place. I mainly go for the combos/hot dog & sausage with potato wedges, peppers & onions smothered into an awesome Italian bread. Been going there since 1968 just ask anyone from Jersey and they’ll agree or else;)

Big fan of Dickie Dee’s. Reasonable pricing for the food; a single dog or sausage sandwich will stuff the average eater. Perfectly executed — sausage or hot dog — either is a winner. The double will fill even the hungriest appetite — Onions, peppers, brown mustard and ketchup on the perfect pizza style bread with delicious potatoes. Love the way they cook hotdogs and potatoes. Yummy.

So I finally had a chance to visit this famous establishment and I must say it was a treat. Known for their famous Italian hot dogs served on pizza bread this place offers up other tasty treats such as pizza, burgers, cheesesteaks, hot and cold subs. I had the Italian dog and it was intimidating at first. I thought it was going to be a mess to eat but it was actually well put together and easy to eat. Very tasty beef hot dog with a nice snap deep fried in peanut oil topped with potatoes, peppers and onions with ketchup and mustard. Tasted the pizza which was surprisingly very flavorful and the crust had a buttery taste to it with just enough sauce and cheese. Now I’m a cheesesteak guy and I tasted their cheesesteak with mushrooms and Swiss and it was solid. Granted it was your standard steak-um flat cooked on a flat top but overall was also very tasty. My girlfriend had the combo burger which is topped with cheese, a hot dog, peppers and onions and fried potatoes served on a pizza bread. A bit too much going on for me but it somehow worked and wasn’t bad. This place is rich in history and there are no bells and whistles here folks. Straight to the point comfort food. Newark Nj is the food capital of New Jersey and this truly represents the city’s rich culture and flavors.

Dickie Dee’s has the best double dogs in the whole New jersey state. There pizza is good also. But I recommend the double dog.

Get the Mushroom and Swiss Burger. The food is good, the price is right, and you can get in and get out quickly.

Short Answer… Depends… The place and sandwiches are always a Jersey Classic… but what you order(deliver) can be up or down. Combo is solid. Double Italian Chesseburger is good too. Hot Dog w/potatoes and peppers! Great. Pizza… can be good or bad.

I ordered for a delivery, and living just 3 minutes away I got my food nearly 30 after placing the order. They also added a sandwich on my order that I didn’t even order, making the bill extremely high. The menu prices in the web link are old and the PRICESHAVEWENTUP. I’m talking about 12.75FOR A COLDTURKEYSUB. Never again

When I hear native East Coast friends rave about sandwiches with the word«Italian» in it I know it’s worth a try. I had no business being in Newark, but was actually surprised by the # of Spanish restaurants that kept popping up in my searches. I was in town on a layover detour strictly for Dickie Dee’s. A sandwich on an American style fry bread/pita with fried potatoes and fried hot dogs. Cash money is the name of the game and it’s not unheard of to wait a good minute in line. The location is small, very old, not dingy, but certainly not modern. Great exposure to natural light. Service is pretty good, albeit sloppy. They are not east coast rude for the sake of being east coast rude. They are certainly in the name of keeping it OG being it’s 3rd generation owned. Price point is still very good and those potatoes really fill you up. The bread is not standard pizza bread, it’s not standard pita, it’s almost like a fry bread, but slightly more loaf ish. It’s cut and the middle cut open for filling. This is crucial to avoid the typical«blowing your back out» which is common in armature burger eating and«blowing your bottom out» when overloading typical hotdog buns. It’s moist, sturdy, yeasty. It stands up to all that oil from the fried inners. The hot dog is fried to a level just before ripper. 2 are put on the bottom with mustard, fried onions, peppers, then fried potatoes equivalent to half a large russet then ketchup. It’s very filling, even the single. It holds up to the what feels like 1 pound mobile feast. I honestly thought the potatoes would have some seasoning on them. They are kind of bland. You have to get the peppers and I would have liked some sautee’d onions and not fried for more crunch. I didn’t get to try the pizza’s but can say the cold subs were blah and the only hot sub that caught my eye was the sausage parm which instantly reminded me of a traditional ragu and I liked it more than most chicken parms. Apparently their version of «cali» is lettuce, tomato, raw onions, mayo and ketchup. The tomato and ketchup combo is really more popular in Utah, but your probably not going to sell any Utah Steak’s or Utah Burgers. Weird how they did diced sautéed onions in my burger, but not my Italian double or single dog. It’s pretty hard to specialize in this Italian dog, cheese steaks, burgers, pizza’s, cold and hot subs. Stick to a few and you’ll be around another 60 years, otherwise no one will order the cold subs which was apparent in talking with locals. They only get a handful of items, ever. If I’m ever in Newark again I’m coming back. IF. IF you are ever in Newark you too should stop by.

Loved this place. Got the double sausage dog. Omg the pictures don’t do justice to how big this thing is!!! Def tasty and filling, the onions and peppers and potatoes were delicious and all for such a bargain! My only compliant is they should add a lot more of that mustard sauce, but that’s just my preferance!

Yeah… yeah…yeah! I’m normally not a huge fan of the overstuffed Italian Dogs because I really can only eat just one and I like a little variety when I’m having hot dogs for lunch. Normally… A few weeks back I FINALLY got to try the famous Dickie Dee’s here in Newark and I was very, VERY happy I did. Four of us ran out for lunch and we all basically got the same thing — the Famous Italian Dog… A piece of delicious pizza bread stuffed with hot dogs, fried potatoes, onions, and peppers. Slather on some mustard and a dab of ketchup and you’re eating a whole meal. Seriously, I could only eat one… I’ve tried Italian dogs other places-even some of my favorite hot dog joints, and I’m usually just ok… they always seem to be missing something. Not At Dickie Dee’s…I don’t know WHY this one is better, but it is. Crispy potatoes, onions and peppers with a really nice flavor, Dogs that were done perfectly and the bread was… well, it was just the right amount of soft/hard that you want with an Italian Dog. This sandwich might not be the best for your cardiovascular system, but it will make your taste buds do a happy dance. Since Dickie Dee’s is a Newark(and a North Jersey) institution I think all of you hot dog fans need to stop by and give them a try! You won’t be disappointed…

The pizza is average but the Italian cheeseburgers and hot dogs are to die for. The place has it’s history and charm but customer service is spotty at best. On several occasions, I would order a pie or two at the front counter and then wait for an eternity for the pizza. On every occasion, I would ask about my order and they would exclaim that they forgot about me and grab the box of pizza that had been sitting on top of the oven to keep warm. They would just pull the pizza out of the oven and let it sit and never call out my name for it. This has happened about 3 – 4 times already and it’s always the same short Hispanic kid who is always dressed in baseball gear as if ready to shoot out the door to play a game of baseball in short notice.

I’ve been sitting on this review for a month now, not because I didn’t have anything to say, but you know LIFE… Anyways… ITWASMYFAULT! It was. I knew from the moment the guy grabbed my bread with no gloves on, that I would be SICK! Deathly ill, I might add, as in FOODPOISONING… He took my dirty filthy money, grabbed my bread with no gloves(red flag #1!) and made my sandwich. He should know better than that! Actually, IIIIIII should have known better but I was feeling greedy and had a taste for a childhood memory. And to top that off, the guy in the back said the onions didn’t look right!(SIRENS!!!) Why I didn’t stop right there and get my money back, I DONTKNOW! The sandwich itself did not taste bad, nor did the onions taste or smell sour or rancid; the truth is that they know proper sanitation practice and KNOW you do not handle MONEY and then touch food, at least he could have had gloves on. And also, if the onions didn’t look right he should have just pitched them and made a new batch instead. But again, I have to take MY part in this because I didn’t INSIST on standards and had a HORRIBLE price to pay. Lesson learned. And let me add that the Italian Hot Dog wasn’t all that!!! It was iight! I mean, how can you possibly fuck up a fried hotdog with bread and potatoes! Anyways… I hope that those who read this will be more observant and particular about their stomach and booty!!! Especially if there are SIGNS! It’s NOT pleasant!!! LESSONSLEARNED!!!

Most HORRIBLE customer service. They say open till 10pm, but if you call at 8:30 on a Saturday night they’re so slow they’re closing early and won’t take orders. Tried to charge me $ 5 extra a slice of cheese on a potato sandwich, and cancelled my order. A week later, called to order some pizza, and the OWNER is telling his guys in the background(as I’m «on hold») «this is the same botch that called last week who canceled her order, yeah, same one!» I cancelled my order again, this time not because of the price but because of the DICK on the phone. Who treats customers like they’re a pain in the ass when they’re paying your bills? I don’t care if you’ve been there 50 years, and I have no idea why they are even still in business astounding never have food available! Worst service in newark. Shame.

I was soooo disappointed with this place!!! To get stale bread on their signature sandwich on a busy day! This place is way over rated to be an icon in Newark Nj! How can you mess up with serving stale bread and think the customers won’t notice??? Won’t go back @ all!

My very first Italian hot dog, ever! Ordered the single combo which is 1 dog and 1 sausage with the works. A bit messy but unique. Cheap prices. Loved the old school set up inside and wanted to love the food however, my stomach couldn’t handle the grease.

So I’ve heard about this so called great place to eat. Unfortunately how would I know. They were pretty witless if you ask me. Asked them for an Italian Hotdog told them no mustard or Ketchup. They replied ‘so everything on it?’, we responded with, ‘Yes, with the exception of Mustard or ketchup.’ He sounded bewildered and said ‘you do want everything on it though’. For the third time, ‘Yes, except mustard and ketchup’. Then we moved on to a Double cheeseburger. But we asked ‘does fries come with that?’, he responded ‘I don’t know’. So we asked the same question he then said, ‘does it?’ Well by then we were frustrated and said never mind. Why would we order from someone who sounds like they don’t care. Makes me feel like they wouldn’t give a crap. I’m sorry but this is our opinion.

While everyone else went to White House Subs after the Winter Break in AC yesterday, I came here. The Turkey and Provolone(fully loaded, extra mayo) was everything I imagined it could be. No extruded meat product here, this is the real deal. Thanks Louis for letting me bust your chops and post your pic. Told ‘ya i’d make you famous!

A Staple of the old neighbor hood still stands in the old North Ward of Newark. Most people never heard of a deep fried hot dog but that is what this place is famous for though their pizza is not bad its not what yo go there for. Its Hot Dogs or Sausage with deep fried potatoes with peppers & onions on Pizza Bread. Seating is just grab a booth still orange after 40 years… and sit down. Bring your crestor as this is not a healthy sandwich but the combination of deep fried everything on a half moon shaped pizza bread brings you back year after year when your in the old hood.

After almost 10YEARS of being a New Jersey resident, I FINALLY ate my FIRST«Italian Hot Dog»; when I first heard this name, I was confused. Nothing about the ingredients seemed terribly Italian. Coming from Bensonhurst Brooklyn and Staten Island for the rest of my prior life here on the planet, I had never even heard of this concoction… I decided if I was to try an Italian hot dog, I may as well go where many NJ natives will argue, is the best: Dickie Dee’s. And what an excellent decision that was. The verdict: the Italian Hot Dog made famous at Dickie Dee’s, it’s simply amazing. A deep fried hot dog with fresh potato wedges, crisp, golden brown and tender inside are placed in a soft bed of a half loaf of round Italian bread, with sweet sauteed peppers and onions, and in my order, an Italian sausage as well– this one is called«the Combo». They layer it with mustard on the bottom and ketchup up top– to have it this way, it’s called«all the way» or with«the works». Thanks to the Unilocalers who helped me find my New Jersey original meal today, I will surely come back again and try more from this Newark institution. 10-16-2012, came back for a double sausage this time… so good!
