This has become our go to place when we order food for parties at work. We get the chicken, rice and fries and have never been disappointed. The parking in the area is awful, but that’s not their fault. If you can work around that, you’ll love their food.

Food is great — portions are huge — price is amazing. Parking is a pain but it’s worth it. The food always tastes amazing and not overly seasoned. Great local staple

Excellent local bbq. My favorite is the beef ribs. Enormous portions! Decent and accommodating service. Basic surroundings. The incredibly busy take out service is in front, the restaurant is in back.

Buy from here at least once a week. Truly delicious food. However, i would agree with some people and say that the place its self looks a tad dirty and not well taken care of. If you are driving forget about it, you will not find parking. I recommend take out.

My family and I always pick up food from here during the weekends. There are so many chicken spots in the ironbound section but this is by far the best chicken in ironbound. Their ribs are also very delicious. Prices are great, staff friendly, and food is great. If you want good chicken or ribs, this is the place to go.

This place has taken the crown from Ferry St in my opinion. Always consistent, salmon and chicken always cooked perfectly.

Dude this place was awesome. Aside from our service being a bit slow, the food was massive and delicious. For 12 bucks, I had enough food for breakfast, lunch, AND dinner. I got the whole chicken with rice and french fries while my significant other got the beef ribs and rice and fries. For the quantity and quality of food you get here, the price tag is dirt cheap. However, come when you have time or order ahead of time because it took us about a half hr before our food came out and had to take it home because we were on a time constraint.

To me this is the best Portuguese BBQ down neck. Get the combo Chicken and ribs. The ribs are big, and taste amazing.

I don’t understand the raves about this place. Yes the portions are abundant and it’s super cheap. But it’s not good. I got the ribs and chicken platter. The ribs are tough and dry. The fries are flavorless. The chicken was tasty. But it all seemed closed to spoiled. No one seemed happy. Maybe the low prices deserve a third star. But the food is pretty poor.

I can say the portion they give here in incredible! I got the ribs with rice and fries because the beans just looked a little to dry for me. Plates are completely stuff making you leave with a bloated stomach. Staff was excellent they was polite, friendly, and was on top of their work. Hope this place gets the business it deserves its an amazing Bbq restaurant.

Definitely thee WORSTBBQ choice you could make in Newark. The place itself is unmentionably dirty. It looks like it hasn’t been swept or mopped in months, maybe longer. The rice is by far the worst rice you can get in Newark, see reviews for McWhorter BBQ or Pulaski BBQ. The meat would be ok but they seem to cook it waaaay more on the well done side and it tastes dry and flavorless. The seating is uncomfortable and cramped. It’s shocking that this place is still open especially given the fact that McWhorter BBQ is only around the corner and light years away in quality.

The food is simply delicious and the service pretty fast. The portions are super-sized! One order is plenty for two people, maybe even three. So if you are dining by yourself, do go with half an order. The whole menu is quite inexpensive, and depending on the day of the week they also have a special dish like ‘Bacalhau a Bras’ on Fridays. I just wish they delivered like most restaurants in Newark, but I guess they are just too busy between the dine-ins and all those take-outs. It’s definitely thumbs up for the Elm Street BBQ crew!

Yes Parking Sucks in Ironbound… Who cares??? This spot is Banging! GET the Chicken platter! Best $ 11 greenbacks spent. Last night the lady and I were fiening proteins. We’ve been on a smoothie detox and were cracked out looking for grilled protein. Lo and behold we stumbled upon elm street. We ordered the grilled salmon platter and a whole chicken platter. Rice and beans for one combo and rice and veggies for the next. The total with tip for takeout was $ 33. Let me begin with grilled salmon platter. Comes with two salmon steaks. Seasoned well with sea salt and grilled AWESOME! The fish and bbq smokey taste were heaven to us. Now on to the grilled chicken platter… I must admit, this is hands down one of the BEST chicken platters I’ve had. We been to Boa Vista and Brazilian spice, but this place the chicken is out of this world amazing! It seasoned well. The chicken was moist, grilled and had well balance of salt, pepper and spice. Omg good for real! We will def go back! Maybe dine in, but gotta figure out the best time to go. Not a fancy white table cloth setting, but the food is amazing. Can’t wait to try the ribs and I hope you enjoy if you go.

Didn’t know what to expect when I walked in. Didn’t know it was Latino bbq. Ordered the chicken combo with ribs and fries. Good lord, already comes with rice. WARNING, I can eat but this was enough food for another adult and child. All of it was outstanding. Couldn’t finish the rice and fries. Bbq sauce doesn’t come on the meat, so you have to ask for it.

This is everything I was hoping for and didn’t get the first time I tried Portuguese BBQ in Newark(different spot). I was just wandering around Newark for a couple of hours before going to the airport when the scent of caramelizing meat and skin drew me down the street. The meat was juicy and very tender with a perfectly seasoned blend of salt and spices. The portion was gigantic for the half-chicken — not a bad-sized bird, and a heaping ton of rice.(I asked for double rice instead of the standard rice+fries, and I think everyone should do that every time. The fries looked average, and they were the skinny kind I’m not a fan of.) The yellow rice was very flavorful in its own right, which helped me conquer that tall mountain. There are even ethnic sodas and beers on offer — I ran through two guarana drinks before deciding I didn’t need to spend more on soda than the entire meal. If I were really hungry, I could have ordered a whole chicken, but I don’t think one person can be that hungry. I do need to come back and try the ribs, now that I read the other reviews.

Having grown up in the Ironbound section of Newark I have tried lots of different kinds of Portuguese BBQ and this is one that I still crave. I now live miles away from this establishment but I will(and do) make the drive out for their chicken and ribs. The prices are great for their portions. I have had take out and dine-in several times and don’t have any complaints as far as cleanliness, food, taste or service. Family members have also tried their salmon here and recall their pleasure with their meal. I’d have to say the only downer is parking. There are a few spaces in the back, a private garage to the right of the establishment, a few feet before its entrance. However, it is small, limited and tight! But of course if you’re familiar with the Ironbound, you would have already known about their serious parking problems.

Good stuff all around. Can’t go wrong. They will make your chicken crispy if that is the way you like it(I do) and spicier upon request.(I do as well) Never have been let down. Que delicia

This place is great they give you so much food, The restaurant is not too big or small. The rice and fries are delicious. I got the combo half chicken and half Ribs. I had to take most of it Togo because I was so stuffed. The only thing I did not like is that they give you bread when you first sit down and it was just cold/room temperature. Other then that it was good

Really, really delicious ribs. Well seasoned and nicely cooked every time. Tender enough that you can cut them easily with a knife and a half order is pretty huge. Highly recommend both the beef and pork ribs. I’ve only had the ribs the two or three times I’ve been here because they are good enough that I’m reluctant to try other things. It’s hard to not compare this place to the other various similar options in the area. The only other one I have been to McWhorter barbecue. Both are very delicious but there are differences. I prefer the dining area at Elm St BBQ. That being said, you do get less meet in a half order. It’s still plenty though so nothing to complain about. This place also has a much bigger menu including various types of appetizers, shrimp, and fish. I definitely recommend checking this place out, and if you do, trying the ribs.
