I used to be a usual customer here before it was called Iron Sushi, it used to be called TGI Sushi. I don’t know if there’s a new owner or if the old owner’s brother took over because the sushi has remained looking and tasting the same since forever, which is a good thing for me! I come here for their huuuge sushi which is really filling. My favorite is the Captain Crunch Roll. It has tempura shrimp with helllla tempura flakes all over, delicious! So tonight I ordered the Bento Box. It already comes with tempura so I just ordered extra tempura and sashimi. I was kind of disappointed that there were only four slices of tuna sashimi. Not even a variety of sashimi, or like 1 or 2 more slices would at least make it somewhat better! My mom and I love coming here for the Hamachi Kama,($ 18). It’s basically grilled Hamachi which is deliciousss. I also ordered a small Asahi($ 3.25). I asked if they had Sapporo but unfortunately they were out. I used to lovvve this place before when the owner would walk around and talk to the customers. We got to know the old owner really well, and although it has a whole new name now and changed quite a bit, it’s a little disappointing that it’s not as up to par service wise, especially since we have always been dedicated customers who brought a lot of people here to try the Hamachi Kama! Anyways, for how many years I’ve been coming here(I’ve been coming here since high school! And I’ve now graduated college so it’s been a while!), there has always only been two servers for the entire restaurant. Rarely will I see three. They’re pretty helpful I just feel bad that they have to take on a good amount of tables when there’s only two of them. I will continue to come back for the Hamachi Kama and sushi!

This place used to be TGI Sushi. I’m not sure how long it’s been open but just from my first dining experience; they really need a lot of work. I’ll give them another shot maybe in a few months.

Nasty. Every single thing that I ordered was terrible, except the Wakame salad. That was fresh and tasty. The California rolls were seriously fishy, I could not even eat them because I’d just gag at the smell. Bleeaarrgghh. The Miso soup tasted like it was out of a package, the salad dressing tasted bottled as did the teriyaki. Not going back here. Also. The next day I spent throwing up because I had a bad case of food poisoning. NEVEREVER going back here.

Iron Sushi is such a diamond in the rough. I am a huge udon fan and am so particular about dashi broths. Iron’s udon is wonderful and their service is amazing. Whenever I would call to place an order for pickup, they always knew it was me haha. Everyone is so friendly and accommodating. On New Year’s we had actually went into Kioku but after standing at the entrance for a couple minutes without being acknowledged we headed down to Iron. It was a great night and it sealed our loyalty to them. Even though we have moved, we always think about them and will be back the next time we’re in the area! Miss you Iron Sushi!

I only came here because my friend invited me here. I recall that this place used to be TGIF sushi which I liked in the past. Anywho on to the review… How can this place even surpass 2 star? I walked in and it took some effort to be noticed. Service was spotty. It took ~15 min for our food to arrive after ordering, water didn’t come until halfway thru the meal, waitress continued to drop dishes everywhere, only 4 pieces were in the bowl of «complementary» edamame, there were only 2 piece of ginger that came with the plate of sushi, and the waitress was not attentive at all… there were only 3 tables occupied so it wasn’t even busy… What turned me off was that the roll was«decent» quality but it costs $ 15/roll! For a total of 3 rolls we paid $ 50. No soda, no thing else! I feel ripped off and totally skimped. I’m sorry, I can find better quality at a cheaper price and better and FASTER service elsewhere.

Overpriced for«fishy» sushi. If I am going to eat sushi, it better be fresh and not have a fishy taste or smell. The sashimi I ordered here smelled and tasted very fishy, which says to me that the fish is not fresh. Gross. And, furthermore, the rolls weren’t even rolled tight enough to keep the fish inside. My rolls fell apart and the rice was so incredibly dry. For a sushi place that has a very specific type of food, rolls should be mastered and the fish should be fresh! Not the case here. The gyoza seemed like something out of the freezer section at the grocery store. I will not be returning to spend $ 50 on a sub par meal.

Every time I come here, I get a bento box because it’s the best value. You get to choose 2 items, and all bentos additionally come with tempura, so it’s basically like 3 items. I’m a little disappointed, though, because the sashimi here is not that fresh at all. I got tuna sashimi once with my bento, and the texture was very tough and hard to swallow. If you judge a sushi restaurant by the quality of their sashimi, this place is not for you. However, the other components of the bento box, like the complimentary gyoza and croquette(1 piece each) and their chicken/beef teriyaki are decent. I’d recommend to just stay away from the sashimi. Apparently, they have a $ 14AYCE sushi roll menu, but it’s only for lunch. I might have to come here mid-day to give that a try. Tip: I saw a $ 17 for $ 30 Groupon for this place. I think it’s only valid for Monday-Thursday dinner, though. Still, not a bad deal.

I feel cheated. A new restaurant with promotion. When I came with the certificate, they said they cannot apply the certificate for lunch menu. Hello? It doesn’t explicitly say on the cert that it CANNOTBEUSEDFORLUNCHMENU! We ordered 4 rolls from the lunch menu(of course, not using the certificate). The fish slices are almost tranparent thin; with thick layer of rice. I am not coming back for dishonest business and so-so quality sushi rolls.

Great food, big rolls with lots of fish. The rolls are priced a bit high but you get your money’s worth. The service was so hospitable, very attentive and friendly. Complimentary soup and edamame was a major plus. To be honest, not my favorite sushi but definitely worth checking out if you love sushi. 3.5 stars

Not impressed at all! I found this place because I came out to my car one day and had at flyer on my windshield which had a mini menu on the back stating they served yogurt soju, various appetizers, chicken wings, fries, etc but did not see ANY of those items on the menu when I got there. I actually thought I was at the wrong place. They really need to get rid of the plants in the back of the restaurant because I was shooing little bugs(gnats) off of my food the entire time of my visit. They saw us doing and didn’t even offer to move us! The food and service were nothing special, infact we asked if they had the yogurt soju that we saw on their flyer and the waiter didn’t even know so he had to go ask. Probably won’t be back.

I am SO glad a place like this has opened up here! Newark needs a late night spot and this definitely fills the void. I’ve been here 3 times and got all the recommended dishes: 1. The best were the iron chicken wings and they were finger-licking good! No really, my friend was really licking his fingers, they were THAT good. 2. Poki(aka poke) is really yummy too. BFF and her bf are from Hawaii and they thought the flavor was good. 3. All the flavored soju are delish… but our order of favorites are: blueberry, peach, original, apple, strawberry, grape, pineapple. 4. Bulgogi sliders and the iron style lettuce wraps were good, too. I can stay here for hours… great selection of beers and other soju. For some reason, we just couldn’t look away from the K-Pop music videos… hopefully they will have even MORE! Can’t wait to try more dishes… I just wish I lived closer, but I’ll definitely be back!

I usually come here for their weekday buffet which I believe runs from 11 – 3:30. It used to be $ 13 for all you can eat. There’s a special menu with a variety of rolls and hot foods. I like that it’s made to order and the fish on top was always fresh, although the slices did become thinner as we ordered our 5th — 6th rolls, which I understand. Last time my bf and I came here, they’ve changed up their all you can eat. There are now 3 levels of «ayce» the price changes depending on the amount of items you order. 2 items for 9.95, 3 for 12.50, unlimited for 15.95 comes with soft drink. For further ayce«instructions and menu» see the photos I’ve uploaded. The good thing is that they didn’t ask which ayce we wanted to do. We only ended up ordering 4 rolls so we were only charged for 2 of the 2 item ayce. My advice is to order a couple rolls at a time, in case your stomach isn’t able to handle everything that you intend on ordering. Saves your wallet money too!

Oh my wow! Do not come here hungry! I ordered salmon sashimi, spicy scallop hand roll, salmon lover roll, uni, and a cherry blossom…$ 70(including tip) later! ahhhh!!! Did I mention I was by myself?(The cherry blossom was to go for my roommate)…I had no idea I was such an expensive date! The fish was fresh and tasted good. The presentation was also very good. AND they were open at the very awkward hour of 3:45pm where every other sushi restaurant in the area doesn’t open until 5pm. The meal also comes with complimentary edamame and miso soup. Delish! The food was pretty good and satisfied my sushi craving. I didn’t mean to order like a beast but everything looked so good! I’d like to come back and try the chef’s specialty rolls… but I’ll make sure to order in a more frugal manner…

Great service and food, but expensive. Came here because I had a coupon. Quaint little place that looked pretty authentic. The waitress was very attentive and the food sashimi looked like it was better quality than most I’ve been too. Very tasty. The only drawback was that it was far too pricey even with the discount. I could be satisfied with another place with just as good quality with better prices, but other than that… great place.

My bestfriend and I just finished watching Jiro Dreams of Sushi on Netflix.(If you’re into sashimi… watch it.) Needless to say, it got our mouths watering for fresh nigiri. So we went to Iron Sushi, which was the closest place near my bf’s house in Newark. Let me say, it did MORE than just fulfill my craving at the time. It created a craving within me that I still carry today.(hehe.) Iron sushi has the FRESHEST sashimi I have ever tasted… and trust me, I have tried a lot of sushi places in my life so far.(I’m slightly obsessed…) Huge portions of fresh sashimi. The fish melts in your mouth and is the perfect temperature for raw fish. The sushi chef is also really friendly too and always tries to keep the sashimi portions pretty big. I felt like I had to share this because I am so in love with this place and I don’t want them to close down since they are pretty slow the times I have been there. Anyway, if you’re looking for fresh, thick-cut sashimi, Iron Sushi is the place to be. Their toro(fatty tuna) sashimi is also SOOOO freakin’ good… but be careful cuz it says market price… and that night, it was $ 17.95 for 2 toro nigiri. But hey, it was kinda worth it because it was so delicious, and the slices were huge for nigiri. Overall, this place really deserves 5 stars solely for their fresh fish and huge portions. I admit it is a little pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for here.

I came here withy food companion and her sister because Nijo Castle was closed. It turns out that my food companion and her family know the owner of the restaurant. I was hoping for a discount… grrrr lol any-who, we were greeted as we walked in. We sat at the bar. The waitress was quick with the menus and asked what we wanted to drink. We ordered tea. They have two menus here ask for the one with pictures lol the menu with pics would be easier for most on deciding on what to order. Just look at the picture lol We didn’t have to wait long for our food because the service was pretty fast. Keep in mind that depending on the time of day that you come here or any other sushi restaurant will determine how fast the service is.

5 stars for the huge pieces of sashimi and being just down the street from my house 2 stars for service(one waitress waiting on all of the tables during the lunch rush… extremely friendly but WAY understaffed) 3 stars for taste of the rolls and fish quality The all you can eat option is worth it if you have the munchies and want to grub HARD. If you’re a light eater, DONOT do this option. The cost of rolls, chirashi plate, and other items are almost the same price as the AYCE option… that being said, this place can get a little expensive. This place is OK to try once if you need your sushi fix, or like I said, if you have a huge appetite.

Happy Anniversary, Iron Sushi! We got a free shot of fruit-infused soju because it was Iron Sushi’s anniversary. The sashimi slices were thick and plentiful, just the way I like it. The rolls were topped with equally generous thick slices of sashimi, and the rolls are very creative. Our server suggested the Geisha Roll which turned out to be my favorite, along with any roll that has spicy tuna in it. My only gripe is that their soy sauce tray is way too deep. It’s hard to dip rolls into such a narrow and deep dish without the roll either falling in or crumbling. I ended up just pinching off a little bit of wasabi onto each roll, then carefully pouring a little bit of soy sauce by bite. The service was friendly, fast, and warm. I’ll definitely be back soon!

Me and my friend stopped by because it is close by and there was a certificate Score. When we walked in there was only two people at another table but as we were dining the place started to fill up some more. As we sat down our waitress brought us miso soup and edamame. We ordered a big bento with sashimi and tonkatsu. It came with one gyoza, cantelope, orange slice, tempura, rice, croquette?(it was a deep fried mash potato patty), and salad. It’s a BIG bento. The tonkatsu taste like any other and the tempura was a bit on the greasy side. It had that oily taste to it. Our server also brought out the sauces before our meal came so it wasn’t as warm as i liked. it is still a lot of food. The croquette lacked some flavor but I dipped it in the tempura sauce and it was all good. The sashimi slices are nice and thick. Tasted very fresh. The city boy roll came with a lot of caviar eggs on top which I am not too fond of. But there was plenty of fish on top. The sauce it was in I wasn’t fond of either. It was good, but not $ 14 good. The downside of this place is the price. I like sushi, but I hate paying an arm and a leg for some good fish. Maybe on my next day off from work I’ll drop by for the lunch all you can eat for $ 13.95. I am glad I tried it and glad there was a certificate for it. For the two items though our total came out to $ 38. Pricey for just two items if you ask me. If I have another I may drop by again.
