Sumo Japanese Restaurant

February 23, 2016 — Picking up Ginger Ale and Saltines for my wife, 24 hours after she ate at Sumo in Newbury Park. She will miss at least a day of work because she is fighting stomach pain and spending every 30 minutes in the bathroom.

We have looked for 1.5 years for a good sushi place in TO and who knew that sumo was right next to our house. Dan, our server, made the first time a wonderful experience and the sushi was amazing.

I have 43 check-​ins at Sumo and I only discovered this gem a year ago. So, it goes without question I am a sushi lover. Now what about THIS place…
First thing, Sumo is the most reasonably priced sushi place I have ever encountered. If you like to eat sushi in quantity as I do, this is a big consideration. But, even that gets better. They have a sushi happy hour with big discounts on the sushi rolls which are already priced reasonable.
The service is surprisingly quick. Sometimes you cannot figure out who is your server. Somebody gets you drinks. Somebody else stops by to take your order. Your food arrives (may or may not be a familiar face). The team service concept may have been invented here. There are also a couple of spectacular servers here — they are on top of everything. By the way, every single server is amazingly polite, friendly and helpful.
This place gets busy. When you check in with the hostess, they try to set realistic expectations. For my experience, I was seated faster than every estimate they gave me. This place is great. Please try it on a Monday afternoon, etc when but not during a busy time when I am surely to be in line too!

Been coming here for years, our go to Sushi joint in Thousand Oaks. Spicy Tuna Roll, Caterpillar Roll, House Roll and Crunch Roll are great !!! Good service, friendly staff.

Plenty of choices for Speciality rolls, sushi, sashimi and a lot of other entrees as well. If not everyone in your party is a sushi fan then this is a good place to come. They have more than enough options for other things — they even serve Fries!.Oh and Macaroon Ice cream.
The place has a nice ambience, plenty of seating area and about 10 seats at the sushi bar. The speciality rolls are a hit or miss at times, and sometimes a bit too enthusiastic with the stuff they put in them. But they a good long list of regular sushi — plain old smoked salmon is my favorite. You get two pieces per order at a not too bad price. They give you sort of a slim menu with a pencil to mark your order — go ahead and experiment with a few. PLace is good for Lunch or Dinner.
The service is also hit or miss. Had a very disappointing experience once when I went 20 minutes before closing time. They took forever to bring our drinks, did not inform us when they had last call for sushi, forced us to pay before we were done eating so they could count money and did not bring us (neither did they charge us) for the macaroon ice cream. Just wanted to try it man! Hopefully someone reads this and fixes it. I don’t get why so many places mark 10:30 as closing time but then stop serving food 15 minutes before that and shove a cheque at you. Put the closing time as 10:15 or wait for 15 minutes,
That being said this might be one of the good sushi places in the neighbourhood and the food is good, so I’ll still go back again. And I did have good experience with service previously.

This place is great ! The service is excellent!
Fish is really fresh, especially the salmon.
Food came out so fast. The kitchen food is good, too.
I love the shrimp with jalapeño sauce.
Try Big Bang roll, or Scream Roll. If you like spicy both taste good. Will not gonna regret coming here.

Food is great, but I am more impressed with the staff. I have never seen a more active manager in a restaurante than this one. His first concern was my satisfaction and I really appreciate that. 5 stars

Went here for a girls day out. Food was okay. Service was slow. I think our waiter forgot about us or ended his shift or something.
I ordered the Chirashi. They gave me the fish and the rice in two separate bowls. Either they forgot to put the rice before the fish or that’s how they roll. Fish wasn’t the freshest, but was still tasty. I had a good time with my girls.

I was out in the area with my friend and decided to look on Unilocal for a nearby sushi restaurant. Sure enough, Sumo was one of the top restaurants that came up.
When I walked in, the restaurant was packed and there was a bit of a wait, but the manager (I believe his name was Daniel?) came out, introduced himself and made sure we were sat right away. Talk about service!
After we sat, our server took care of us right away. Even with the restaurant being packed, we got our food rather quickly. Shows how hard the kitchen staff is working, along with the food runners and servers. The same manager even came around to check up on us (again) and made sure we were doing well.
This restaurant is a must if you love sushi and great service!

Came back in town for some more sushi! Walked in on a Christmas evening I was seated shortly right when I walked in. Which was a bonus because I felt so welcomed.
First off while my friend and I were seated my server quickly came took our drink order and shortly it came which was a bonus because sumo always has quick and fast kind service. It’s such a busy restaurant yet they’re always on their toes helping customers out which I love.
Did I mention how reasonable the price of the food is? Like holy cow! For the quality of the food of how little I pay. It’s AMAZING. Hands down sumo is amazing.
Service is always excellent MY severs and others kept checking up on us here and there and it just made me feel so welcomed and felt like they appreciated us being there.

I’m always gonna give this place a try and I hope this restaurant never changes. I absolutely love this place more than anything!

Service good but quality of food declined wig their drastic menu change. used to be our go-​to Japanese place cause if the variety and quality.
Not coming back. Very sad.

Delicious sushi. Like the crunch roll and black dragon. Miso soup and house salad.
Before 6 and after 830 are happy hour, you can eat delicious food with good price then.

I still love this place and love the staff but couple days ago when I went there by myself, I sat on the bar. I remember most of the sushi chefs are friendly but this non-​asian chef got some disgusting attitude. I do not care if he doesn’t want to work or want to go home whatever. He gave the ginger and wasabi to the people who got there way later than me with very kind smile, and later he looked really mad and asked me that if I ready to order. Well I do not want him to make my food. So I decided to just order some food from kitchen. Will never sit in front of him ever again.

Ordered to-​go and enjoyed a delicious bowl of Udon Noodle soup with Shrimp and Tempura vegetables

«¹⁰⁄₁₀ would come back again» — everyone that has came to the restaurant. One piece of sushi from this restaurant will have you screaming for more. The sushi chef, I think it was Kazu, is a master with a knife and a legend with the ladies. Don’t let reverse happy hour fool you, if you get there late you will have to wait longer than Steve Buscemi has to wait to find a movie to act in that isn’t produced by Adam Sandler.
One time I was at Sumo’s and our waitress came by and asked if we were almost done with our meal which I replied «yes» then she took the soy sauce sitting on our table and put it in my water and walked away without saying a word. Classic.

We used to love this restaurant especially their great deal for happy hour. Food is quite fresh. Service is 3/​5, it’s OK. Last Saturday we went there again [we always go on weekends] the first time and surprisingly found there was a long line waiting. We arrived at 5:30pm and asked the hosts if we would make it at the happy hour, she said maybe and she was doing her best to seat us who arrived before 6pm.
Turned out it was a lie, they kept us waited since 5:30pm and finally sat us down at 6:05pm and the manager came out said we had just missed the happy hour!
We were not satisfied and asked for a supervisor or manager that can talk to us. They just told us there was no manager on site that evening, which was a lie. We just spoke to him…
Anyway, we felt that we were not being treated fairly. The manager could easily honor the happy hour price for us who waited for 35 minutes and just passed it because we had hope to get seated based on the host’ comments.
There was nothing they wanted to do to keep us there. Obviously they did not care for our business.
In truth we go there almost twice a month regularly and we felt this is just not good business to keep customers happy. Therefore we left right there and then and will NOT go back there again.
I would have given them a 4 star if this incident had not happened.
As of now — we will NOT recommend anybody to go there at all. BAD BUSINESS ALTOGETHER.

If you’re looking for the best bang for your buck, look no further. This place is it.
I used to come here all the time when I used to hang out in Camarillo. I’m not sure why it took me forever to come back.
Decided to come in today for lunch with a couple friends and was immediately won over. And of course I left questioning myself why I stopped coming here.
There was no wait when we came in so we sat ourselves as soon as we walked in. The three of us all decided to do the lunch special. If you come here for lunch, that’s the best thing to do.
The lunch special is $ 15 and you get miso soup, a small bowl of salad, a choice of sushi roll that has 8 pieces and another plate with 6 pieces. I wouldn’t even be mad if that price went up.
The food was great. The soup was pretty generic, but the salad made up for it. I got 2 rolls. The first one was the spicy tuna. I loved how simple it was, but great tasting. The second plate was the spider tempura roll or I think tiger. It’s one of those. Also very good. I would only change one thing about this dish and that’s to ask for less sauce because it made the dish pretty sweet.
The place was very clean and well kept. The staff was also on point. From the moment we walked in til we left, they were all very nice. It’s no wonder my Camarillo friends come here so often.

My favorite sushi restaurant! Sumo knows quality. Newbury Park is actually quite far for me, but whenever I get a chance to get out here, I make sure I get to visit Sumo. Sushi is ALWAYS fresh, and their dishes are always quite innovative! Staff is always friendly as well.
I love ordering their sushi. Not all sushi places have Ono, so I love to order the fresh Ono here. We ordered quite a bit because we were starving. We had the sweet shrimp which was off the wall fresh.
Sumo is definitely a must-​try!

I was a bit torn about my review. The food is excellent and perhaps it was just that day and bad timing that led to bad service: so my wife and decided to give it a try today. The server recognized me instantly and was warm, the service was fantastic this time around. The food came on time we were very happy and my wife ordered the lunch combination and spicy tuna roll was replaced with spicy chicken, when we told them they promptly got her the tuna roll and did not take back the chicken. So I guess all is good. I def recommend this place. Please do give it a try.
