Simply a great atmosphere! The vibe this place gives is great for all groups of people. Family’s and adults! The staff is kind and friendly with a positive attitude. The live acoustic entertainment was just right! For drinks we shared an avalanche bowl. Followed by another. These drinks were very tasty! I will say that they are a bit over priced at $ 17 bucks a whack!!! Also, for some reason the two taste slightly different from each other for some reason, perhaps just a different bar tender?) We ordered the ribs as an appetizer along with the garlic knots. The ribs had a sweet homemade BBQ sauce that for me made the rib. The rib meat was okay, but not the best I’ve ever had by any means.(I found them to be a bit tough and not your traditional«fall off the bone») The knots were good, with a nice marinara sauce. I would order these again. For our main course we ordered the speciality/signature BBQ chicken pizza. No complaints here at all!!! It was delicious! Would definitely recommend. We also ordered the steak tips! Cooked Med-Well. And let me tell you, this was the steak to be eating. VERY tender, nice Large pieces! The mashed potatoes were bland but the quality in the steak tips more than made up for it! All in all, if your looking for a warm and fun place to unwind and relax at the end of the perfect day this is the place to go!

The physical atmosphere was really cool. Old ski memorabilia adorns the wooden walls. It reminds me of a lot of the bars I used to frequent when I lived out west, in Yellowstone National Park. Rustic, traditional Americana, simple décor. Beer mugs hang behind the bar for the frequent«mug clubbers.» The place was packed! I had a margarita. It was one of the worst margaritas I’ve ever had. It was like sour mix had been poured into a glass of ice with a splash of the cheapest tequila ever. I was with someone who had a terrible(but strong) gin and tonic. We actually returned this drink and asked for a cranberry vodka, which was also less than stellar, sweet cranberry from the soda gun. I resorted to my old favorite, something that can’t be ruined, rum and coke. As I sat there in the game room area(they have a pinball machine, big buck hunter, and golden tee) I looked around at the crowd. Maybe it was the night, but this didn’t look like the norm for a bar such as this. Then I remembered, this looks like the west, but it’s the east coast. Specifically just above Boston, on Thanksgiving weekend. I wanted people in flannels, dirty jeans and trucker hats. I wanted to see the old lady with a few teeth on a bar stool talking to everyone that dare get near her. I wanted the 20-something ski patrol and lift operators to be there after their shifts. I wanted the guy with his dog under his table(because I always brought my dog to the bar, which made the bar WAY more fun). Instead, this place was douche bagery central. Bros blocked the way to the bar and cut in front of me. Women in fancy dresses took the stool I was going to sit on, as I had it in my hand. And preteens, there to eat, as their parents drank, roamed about. Maybe this is your crowd, but it’s not mine. So, two stars for the physical atmosphere, but one star for the clientele and the drinks. I will choose to spend my money elsewhere… Or drink at home, in my flannel, with my dog.

Loud and fun atmosphere. Fun singers and bands. Great for apres ski. The salmon risotto and the brick oven pizzas are my favorites! We typically stop in after a day at Sunday River. Definitely recommend for a fun time and great food!

Matterhorn Ski Bar in Newry is a place I have always wanted to try but just haven’t had the opportunity to as it is closed in the summer when I usually travel to the Sunday River Ski Resort. That all changed when I trekked up to the resort for some snowshoeing this weekend. After a day slope side, Simone and I wanted to find a place to enjoy good food and good music. I am happy to say Matterhorn had both. We arrived to a full parking lot at about 8pm on a Saturday night but walked inside only to be seated immediately at a table for two. The place was busy but had more then enough room for everyone with both upstairs and downstairs seating. We sat downstairs right beside the concert stage which was perfect for listening to the band later on. The whole restaurant is designed to look like a ski lodge and has so much cool local ski memorabilia that one could spend hours just checking it all out. Matterhorn is well known for its party atmosphere but also its brick oven pizza so of course that is what I was going to try, but first it was a cold beer with some fried green beans. The Green Beans were as they should be, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. They were served with a great homemade Blue Cheese Ranch dip that was so chunky and delicious that I got more to go with the pizza. The Pizza that Simone and I decided to split was the Weisshorn which was topped with Bacon, Diced Buffalo Chicken, Blue Cheese and a three cheese bland. The Chicken was more tangy then hot and the bacon was diced and crispy, but the standout was the homemade thin crust. It was different then most thin crust pizza I have tried and was more reminiscent of a pastry crust rather then pizza. It was light and flaky but held up under the toppings. It was good in the fact that it didn’t feel overly filling but still had a nice sturdy chew. We finished the entire 12 inch pie and still had room for more dessert and drinks ! Dessert was what you’d expect from a Bar, Brownie Sundaes, Cheesecakes, and Peanut Butter pies and cakes. We choose the Peanut Butter cake and although it was not the best dessert ever it was still a solid choice. Slabs of cake were separated by slabs of peanut butter frosting with chocolate drizzled across everything. We finished it off and then settled in with drinks in hand to listen to one of the better cover bands we have ever heard anywhere, Last Kid Picked. This was a great dinner and great night at the Matterhorn. I wish they were open in the summer but at least now I have an excuse to make the trip to Newry in the winter again.

The ultimate après ski venue. Great ambiance with ski paraphernalia all over the walls, ceilings and bar. Become a member of the mug club and get supersized drinks. Wood fired pizza is the main thing here and well worth it, especially on ½ price Tuedays. Great mix of young families, ski bums and locals.

Great at accommodating and changing my dish. The cedar plank salmon was soooo good. I can’t believe I got that kind of dish at a bar.

For restaurants in Sunday River, which are not as abundant as other ski towns, Matterhorn takes the cake. Maha and I arrived at about 7 pm one evening and we were pretty hungry for yummy food after trying the restaurant in the Jordan Grand and being almost put off food forever(I know, I know-the drama!). We sat down, ordered a Switchback for me and a Makers Manhattan for Maha, and set to studying the menu. We both wanted something filling but not too heavy, so we decided to share the tuna tataki, the lobster salad, and a 12 inch pizza. We ordered ground bison, mushrooms, and roasted garlic on whole wheat dough. The food was served pretty quickly and it was scrumptious. The lobster salad was epic, with almost a whole lobster sitting pretty on perfectly seasoned greens. We devoured the tuna, which was also good. The pizza was decadently delicious, with thin crusty crispy crust, amazing roasted garlic cloves, nice and juicy bison, and perfect button mushrooms. We left full but not stuffed, and dreaming of repeat performances of which I’m sure there will be many when we are in Sunday River again.

Swiss ambiance is definitely in line with their skier clientele. The bar is separate from the dining area. Has a stage for live events. The menu had a variety of different selections. The woodfire pizza looked great. You can watch the chef prepare this. Many options to add onto your entrees though a little pricey. A bit touristy with their store selling clothing and other goods. We will definitely return with the family. Wonderful apres ski offerings.

Our server was very friendly and attentive and the ski beer was very tasty. However, I was unimpressed with my pizza but simultaneously found myself eating too much of it as I knew how much I was paying for it. Apparently my husband’s burger was good but let’s be honest, he was two beers in before he got it and this was after three hours of cross country skiing. The best I can say is it will fill you up, and our customer service at least was very good. The bar looks fun and the drinks specials seem cool too. Unfortunately I was DD!

The mark of a good restaurant is not necessarily its size, but the quality of its food and the generosity of its staff. Along that line, some of the finest dining experiences I’ve had have been in the small diners and dives scattered throughout the suburbs of New Jersey, and fine dining in New York City. The location of the restaurant makes it appear promising. The owners were wise to pick prime real estate for a bustling ski town. Moreover, pitching themselves differently than other restaurant at or near the mountain. After waiting for about 30 minutes for a table, my party and I were finally seated. We ordered drinks, and then we ordered two appetizers, and our entrees. Thirty minutes later our waitress came to our table and told us our appetizers would be right out. Meanwhile other patrons of the restaurant came in after us, and were served with their food much sooner. Another 30 minutes went by and we signaled the waitress. I decided to give the waitress one final chance to redeem herself by asking her what happened to our order. We FINALLY received our ‘bruschetta’(if that’s what you want to call it), and mussels(which seemed to have swam from the shells) by the co-owner Patrice. She basically made up every excuse she possibly think of, and never once apologized for how long it took for us to get our food. She then started arguing with us, and then stormed off. There is no room for sensitive people in the restaurant business. The customer is always right, and the co-owner should have bite the bullet and told us she was very sorry, and the appetizers would be taken off the bill. Unprofessional on every level. Upon sharing my story with other people from the town, and other skiers at Sunday River this behavior for the co-owner is the norm. Visiting the Matterhorn was certainly an experience to remember, but one that I never hope to repeat and would not wish upon anyone else. If you are tempted by the décor and the intriguing location, you would be better off bringing a camera to the restaurant than your appetite. PS Does this restaurant know how to spell vallet(especially in cold temperatures).

Of all the ski bars in all of Maine, this one is the skiiest! Okay, so I don’t entirely know what the means, but if there was an award for a restaurant that most embodied the après-ski bar feel, I’m inclined to believe that the Matterhorn might take the prize. As others have commented, the walls of the interior are decorated from floor to ceiling with old school gear(according to their site, they have close to 900 skis adorning the inside) and photos. And, as you might expect, the most common attire here in the winter is long-sleeved shirts, ski pants, and a colorful array of hats. Sexy never looked so warm(read: the floor can get slippery as heck, so if you decide to come rockin’ a pair of heels, than who’s the fool? Me. Yes, I’ve done this, but it’s because I was totally there as an Amstel or Heineken model. Note to future spokesmodels: Just. Wear. Boots.) My favorite things about this place? It’s AWESOME for kids, groups, and is one of the best places to see people from all walks of life come together for a beer and some laughs. Also, the live music can be great. And finally… and this is the most important part… the wood-fired pizza. THEWOOD. FIRED. PIZZA. It looks and smells good, it’s fun to watch being made, and most importantly? It’s delish. Like: you-are-the-perfect-post-snowboard-food-so-get-into-mah-belleh-now kind of delish.(In another life, I was having a torrid love affair with their Weisshorn. Also, they offer GROUNDBISON as a topping. Crazy.) My only gripes are the bathrooms(they are small and in the winter always very, very wet), the distance from actual Sunday River(it’s not as close as I would like), the bartenders(in the past, I’ve noticed they can become unpolished jerkholes at the drop of a toque) and, mostly, the fight to get to the overly-crowded bar. Not only have I had to wait up to a half hour standing at said bar before(literally, I stood there trying to get the bartenders attention just to be blatantly ignored), I’ve been physically pushed out of the way by big dudes before so they could get in front of me. The point? Get a table and avoid all of that. Unless — after realizing your lift ticket to Sunday River did not include a SkiFree-like experience where you would not at any time encounter the Abominable Snow Monster trying to eat you — you still need a little adventure in your life. Then by all means, take on the bartenders/bar-sitters!

BLUE!!! Yes, my favorite drink here is their BLUE drink. It’s official name is the Shock Wave which I learned by the end of the season and is served in a giant bowl. On that note, you may or may not like this place for one reason… The Crowd. Matterhorn is one of the hottest ski bars and is the place to party on the weekends. Because of that it may or may not be your thing. If you can deal with the 30 minute wait for a beverage or don’t care if you’re drinking and just rather dance like my friends and myself, then you will love this place. If you just want your drink and don’t like walking around in capacity with hot and sticky dancers then this may not be your thing and you may want to avoid the ‘horn on a Saturday evening. If you like to dance, Matterhorn continues to bring in the best bands and knows how to throw some awesome parties! They also have pretty decent food if you get there on a not so busy evening or early enough on Saturday. Be prepared for a cover on the weekends. Be prepared for it to be hot and crowded. And be prepared to wait at least 30 minutes at the bar for a drink. I LOVETHISPLACE!!! Side note — awesome staff here! Shout outs to Kristin, Mary, Jason the bouncer/door guy, and Allison!

First time here last weekend. Outstanding wings and great beer! That’s enough for me. We went during the«Reggae Fest» and the band was pretty good. The atmosphere here is really cool — a lot of Sunday River memorabilia all over the walls. It’s the kind of «après-ski» place you’d like to see at every ski resort. I’ll update my review later after I try more of their food. All we had was a ceasar salad(very good) and wings. These were some of the best wings I’ve ever had to be honest — very crispy and delicious. Will definitely be going back!

We go here pretty much every time we ski at Sunday River. We head in ther on Tuesday nights for the $ 5 pizza special. $ 5 with one topping and $ 1 per topping for additional toppings. The pizza is great and the topping choices wildly varied(ground Bison, Proscuitto, pineapple, buffalo chicken, and so many more…) Great beer choices on tap too including their own Ski Bar beer which is one of my favs. Try and sit upstairs though as downstars tends to be very noisy, especially if parents are letting thier kids run wild. The place also has a great«archive» of old ski gear all over the walls and ceilings.

went with my family five ppl total. after we were seated we didnt even get water till about 40 min in. took about two hours to get our meal by which time ppl werent even hungry anymore. my moms tomatoe soup was so thick and tangy that she didnt eat more then a spoonfull, ive never seen her not eat her order. my french onion soup was chok full of garlic and chives and onions were not carmalized. it was the worst tasting french onion soup ive ever had which is disapointing since it was circled on the menue as if it was a special item.(my stomach didnt function properly for a full day after eating that soup.) my dad liked the burger but after a two hour wait lost his apitite. pizza seemed ok but nothing special in the least. the table next to us actually refused to pay when they left, they ordered pizza and a salad and were not happy. on the good note they have a good beer selection.(but so does every place in the area) I took a picture of the tap. the only note able aspect of this restaurant. Drafts were $ 5.25, «ski bar beer» was good. Although i had to walk down to the bar and order drinks myself since our waiter was piss poor. they do have a pool table upstairs but it was over run by 6 – 8 year old girls when I was there… probably why they have crayons on the dining tables. but if your going to give me crayons and a two hour wait… at least give me somthing to doodle on!
