JP Licks

I am a longtime fan of JP Licks ice cream, and bring family and friends from out of town whenever they visit. However I have had some seriously disappointing customer service experiences at the Newton Centre location. They seem to have trouble finding and keeping good servers. In my experience, there is about a 50 – 50 chance I will encounter a friendly and competent server rather than a seemingly bored, disgruntled, or virtually hostile one. In one particularly egregious experience, I ordered a hot fudge sundae and the server did not even give me an opportunity to order the ice cream flavor and toppings I wanted, and instead handed over the most generic version possible. In many years of ordering many hot fudge sundaes, both at JP Licks and at other local ice cream places, this had never happened to me before! Seriously disappointing, yet I would have a hard time staying away because I enjoy their ice cream so much.

This place is packed with screaming — literally screaming — kids and has only 2 staff with a line of 22 people. Never coming back to this location.

Amazing little place!
I have visited the Chestnut Hill and Dedham locations (and love them both!), and wanted ice cream, so, since I was in the area, I decided to check out the Newton Centre JP Licks, and it was just as great.
Definitely smaller, and more compact than the other JP Licks locations, yet still incredibly quaint, and the ice cream is delicious. Specifically, chocolate chip as well as regular chocolate are amazing. The staff were a bit crazy (which I didn’t particularly care for…), but still friendly and kind. They also have a full section of cakes you can order from them as well as oder pints & quarts of different ice cream, yet there isn’t a display case, ready-​to-​go like other JP Licks. They do have outdoor seating, as well as a small eating counter at the front of the restaurant, looking out to busy Langley Road, which is sort of nice as well. Additionally, they have tons of ice cream flavors, frozen yogurt, smoothies, drinks, frappes, and so many other delicious treats. Definitely the best place to get amazing ice cream in Newton Centre (is there anywhere else really? Cold Stone closed…)

I ordered a simple cappuccino. They didn’t have a sleeve for the cup, they gave me a latte instead of a cappuccino, and they served it so hot that when I went to take the lid off and it spilled on my hands it scalded me. I won’t be back.

Absolutely delicious ice cream, a Boston staple! A little bit on the pricy side, but the portions did not disappoint. Always a fan of a local business succeeding.

I’ve always been a huge JP Licks fan my entire life. I love that they have oreo’s mixed with all the best flavors of ice cream, anything from coffee to cake batter. In addition to serving hard frozen yogurt, I love that they give customers the option of soft serve tart frozen yogurt. They always have so many flavors to choose from too!
Bonus – They now have vegan ice cream!!! I’ve seen them make these dairy free treats using coconut milk, hemp milk, and soy milk. At last, vegans have more to choose from outside of the mediocre world of sorbet. JP licks def gives fomu a run for their money now

the stout ice cream was an utter disaster. it felt like frozen beer, which i wouldnt have a problem with if it wasnt a billion dollars. it was one note, and not properly cared for. the alcohol wasnt burnt off enough… terrible.

Awful hard yogurt (how do you mess up choc chip?) Maybe that’s why they were so empty on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Way overpriced, super slow and disorganized to boot. Avoid!

That being said great flavors and good quality ice cream and frappes. PLUS they make birthday ice cream cakes!

Jp licks has the best hard yogurt and ice cream I have ever tasted. This location is small but they have a few seats. No parking lot but metered street parking is easy to find. I’ve been to this location a few times now and service has always been friendly. They are not stingy with the amount of samples they give you. I highly recommend peanut butter cookies and cream ice cream and chocolate chip cookie hard yogurt. They are some of the best flavors I have ever tasted in my life. Make sure you get one of their cow cards for rewards.

Love my local JPLicks — great ice cream, convenient location. The only thing to watch out for is those long lines in the summer!

This J.P. Licks is great! The service is pretty fast paced and the ice cream is consistently great! Unlike the J.P. Licks in Wellesley the employees here are a probably over 18 and also a little less sloppy with their orders. Even though they have great ice cream, I got a smoothie there the other day and it was just as delicious. I also really enjoy the location because there is pretty of parking and there is also a couple benches to sit by outside. Although it doesn’t beat the JP licks in JP, it’s a very close second!

Vanilla milkshake is as good as it gets. I really enjoyed my pistachio ice cream. I sampled the Fresh Mint and thought it was the bomb — nice and light. I read a review about the customer service and I felt like the person before me wasn’t treated very kindly — JP Licks, improve upon this!

There is nothing worse than finding hair in your ice cream from a fully-​packed store with servers who are angry for being busy on Mother’s Day. I won’t ever go back to this ice cream parlor.

Great local ice cream shop in Newton Center. The place was packed with hungry sweet tooths & SO many flavors to choose from! From ice cream to dairy free to gluten free and sorbets, JP Licks has a flavor for everyone.
I got the cappuccino crunch on a cone & my friend got a mint cookies & cream — both were super tasty. I actually liked the mint cookies & cream better — not your standard mint green colored ice cream & didn’t have the overwhelming flavor of mint you would expect. Staff was friendly & let us try a few flavors before we made out selection.
Great place to stop for some ice cream & take a stroll around the center and window shop :)

JP Licks is the place to go if you have a craving for your favorite ice cream. I always get either the Pistachio or Maple Walnut ice cream on a sugar cone with chocolate sprinkles (in my book, they’re still called jimmies — probably just dated myself there, oh well :)). Also, if you are in a jam and don’t have time for lunch, grab an extra thick frappé, it’ll fill you up right away and its sooooo good!
Customer service can be more welcoming but overall its fine as long as I get my ice cream fix!

I had selected the last of my 3 toppings for my sundae when I noticed the marshmallow topping. Bummer, I’d have chosen that instead of the hot fudge if I had known it was there. A staffer offered to sub it for the whipped cream. Cool! Creative thought is always a good thing when it comes to service!

Rudest workers in the world. Not friendly at all. The ice cream is fine. Nothing worth squeezing into the stupid little place for. Can’t believe how rude they are there.

I’ve been going to J.P. Licks since I was a kid, and still go all the time, but the Newton one is the main J. P Licks for me. In the beginning, I always got the soft serve oreo, but then I switched over to their mint oreo. Now I get their Oatmeal hard yogurt– it has a hint of cinnamon and doesn’t really taste like oatmeal, but I still love it.
They also have interesting monthly flavors which keeps their menu fresh! HIGHLY recommended ice cream place!

Awesome monthly flavors… bring back black raspberry chip hard yogurt.
