I bought a groupon for a keratin treatment. I was a little nervous, given the negative reviews, but figured a bad attitude is something I can ignore/get over(unlike, say, a terrible cut or botched treatment). When I called, the person I spoke with was incredibly friendly and it was easy to schedule an appointment. Whew. Then I called back a few days to move up my appointment. No problem. So far, so good. Things just got better from there. Michael(the owner) did my hair and I was completely blown away. He was so nice — made sure I was all set in terms of drinks, that I was comfortable, etc. He was a bit chattier than I like(I am fine with not talking at all), but that’s not a big deal. As would be expected, he did a little up-selling, but nothing too aggressive(I once got a treatment at Sophia La Belle, also via groupon I think, and it was a terrible experience they were so pushy). He asked about my most recent hair cut. I’d had a recent cut a few weeks before and as he did the straightening, he said he recommended another cut. I thought he was just trying to garner more business but then he showed me the back of my hair. It had been cut for curly hair, and looked great curly, but was an uneven mess when straightened. I was really glad he actually showed me what he meant and I had him even it up. The salon was very clean and looked nice. Best of all, my hair looks amazing. I also appreciated that I was treated as a regular customer and not a «groupon customer» — if that makes sense — I wasn’t looked down upon or anything. Groupon experiences can be hit or miss. This one was definitely a hit, yay!

I am new to the area and was looking for a place to get a hair straightening treatment at a reasonable price, I found their special on Groupon and purchused it. Very happy with their service. I was able to make an appointment soon. Mike did a great job on my hair and I am super happy with the outcome. I will definitley go back for the same service when the time comes. Thank you Mike.

I had never heard of J. Michael Salon since there are a surfeit of hair shops in the area, but I had a $ 130. Groupon for a $ 300. low-formaldehyde, straightening/smoothing treatment, so why not? The shop is located in a Rockville strip mall, behind another mostly vacant mall(woeful White Flint) but there’s plenty of parking. Once inside the shop, the owner was warm and welcoming, and he even gave me coffee! My stylist was«Cha,» and she was excellent. The shampoo station had comfortable sinks, and Cha gave me an AMAZING head massage. I enjoyed her vibe as she hummed along to the 80’s playlist. The only reason I don’t lavish a 5-star rating on this place is because without a Groupon, I would have shelled out at least $ 300., and for that price they need to offer wine – not coffee.

I have been going to Michael for over a year now to get my hair cut and colored. I have found him to be very talented in this category and would highly recommend him to others. I don’t know about the other services people have reviewed, but he is defiitely very good in this category. Before going to Michael, I had tried several other places in the area(I moved here about 2 years ago) and those experiences were not good and I couldn’t believe there weren’t better stylists int his area. Michael changed all that. His cut was great. He confirms what I want done each time. The cut is great and lasts. His color is right on for me. He is expensive, but i haven’t been able to find anyone else who can do the job as good as he can. Sometimes he is more talkative than others, but we all are in the course of our work, I would argue. He can be very charming and entertaining. I have enjoyed the experiences I’ve had there.

I didn’t notice at first, but 3 months ago the owner wrote me a very nice message letting me know that the staff had changed and that I had been removed from the email lists. He didn’t ask for anything in return but I think it’s only fair to update the review. Not sure how many stars to give, but I did want to mention that the owner cares about the customer experience.

I went there on a Monday, with a LivingSocial voucher for $ 100 towards services. Having been on their website looking at the prices for a spiral perm($ 109) which was what I wanted done. I opted for the pay $ 50 get $ 100, thinking what ever overage there was I’d just cover, because it seemed silly to use the $ 100 for $ 200 option as I’ve NEVER paid more than $ 120-$ 140 for a perm in my life! I arrived at noon for my appointment and J. Michael was the only one in the salon… no other stylists, nor clients, and it was the same for the entire 2 hours I was in there! After having me wait a few minutes while he finished a phone conversation, he proceeded to ask me what I wanted. I explained I wanted a spiral perm with tight enough curls to last a year. Most of my other perms have gone at least that long because my hair takes a perm well and I don’t like to over process my hair. I explained I’d precut my hair to the general length I’d wanted & it would only need a bit of shaping at the end into the long layers I prefer. So I endured the whole perming process, he used foam rollers, which I had my doubts about, since no one has ever used anything but perming rods on me before, but I gave it the benefit of the first time try… he did the shaping on my hair in all of 10 minutes, and I was pleased enough with the cut, but looking at the curls of my perm, I can’t say I was encouraged that it was curly enough to last as long as I wanted. Still I went up to pay, and he tells me that I still owed him another $ 100 after the livingsocial credit was applied. Wondering where all the extra cost was I looked down and could barely read the receipt for services rendered, and he said he had even applied a $ 15 credit… but I did note he was charging me $ 75 for my «haircut» REALLY??? like I said he did a 10 min. shaping, nothing strenuous or involved on me! DEFINITELY not worth $ 75! In any case, it is a day and a half later and I haven’t even washed my hair with shampoo yet, and I look at my hair and I am going to be surprised if this perm makes it through the first wash, never mind the rest of the summer! For all of this I paid a grand total of $ 170(including his $ 20 tip) Next year I’ll go back to J.C. Penny’s where I can get a better job done and still pay $ 30 less for it!

I went a few days ago with a Living social coupon for a hair cut and color. I was«greeted» by Michael. He has a rude demeanor. He was short with me. He seemed to be in a hurry, and so I verified I had come at my scheduled time and not arrived late. He said no, not a problem you are on time. I then said great, so I am here for a cut and color. He looked at me like I had explained I wanted to take lessons in neuroscience. I then said, «did I come at a bad time?» To which he replied with, no, I am just trying to understand what you want. I said ok, well I want a hair cut and color and I have a living social coupon. he then said, Ok well what color, «I mean what do you want, blue, purple red.» I said — «oh ok, yeah paint it BLUE and let’s see how well that goes over at work… ha!» I’m not sure if he enjoyed my sarcasm. I then said«Ok, I want brown» He said«ok great, got it.» Now, you may be wondering why would someone stay? I stayed because I bought the living social coupon and didn’t feel like going through the hassle of returning etc. At the end, my hair looked fine. Nothing special. fine. He didn’t ask me how I wanted it styled, he didn’t ask anything. He just slabbed some gel and said thanks. Don’t think I’ll be visiting again.

I bought a groupon for $ 149 for a Keratin Complex smoothing treatment(a $ 400 value). I also got a haircut($ 75 for a blunt bob haircut). I was hoping that the treatment would make my hair look smoother, frizz free, … and such like what i read off the internet. I know I am not supposed to believe everything i see on the internet. Anyway, I went to get the treatment done. And I was so disappointed afterward. It did nothing to my hair. I got there and was greeted by Michael. He was really nice. I wish the result was better because I really liked him. But it wasn’t. I still feel sad every time I see my hair in a mirror. He did the treatment and cut my hair. After washing and towel dried my hair, he put the keratin on my hair. And then he blowed dry my hair and straightened it. Then he cut my hair. The whole process went really fast which I would be happy if the result was different. From videos i’ve seen and blogs i’ve read about other people’s experiences with Keratin treatment, I am pretty sure that what I’ve got was nothing like theirs. It is not even a «you get what you paid for», it is a rip off to me.

I went to get my hair done today, J Michael did my hair! While I was waiting a few mins, I saw the cut he did on the client before me and it was great so I knew I was in good hands. I had a groupon for $ 44 for color shampoo and style. I have medium length hair and he didnt charge me extra for longer hair as other salons would. He kept good conversation going. The salon was very clean and it was nice! They also do nails and skin. I will be going back for more. I loved my hair color and he explained what he put in my hair and gave me a good shampoo. Most people who put out groupons give u crappy results but I am 5 star satisfied with my service! Def recommend this place to everyone! *I washed my hair monday after getting it done friday, the color didn’t stay much on my highlights but still looks okay. may have to go in to get a toner put ontop of my highlights.

Not located where Google maps says based on address. It is behind White Flint Mall in the strip mall with the PetSmart and Shoppers Foodmart. Martha was incredible. I love my hair from the highlights to the cut, it was a great experience. I am not much for conversation during a haircut for the same reasons that WMATA advises you not to talk to the bus driver. I have serious concern that a distraction will result in a really bad haircut. We chatted a bit, but she didn’t push the conversation. Definitely a great experience. Later in the weekend, I went to my sister’s wedding and I got tons of compliments on my cut and the new highlights. Even the salon where I went to get my hair done for the wedding, commented on what a great job Martha had done. I will definitely be back and ask for Martha!

I decided to go old school with a perm and found this salon because of a Groupon they were offering & figured I’d try it out. At my first visit Michael did a perm, cut & color wash and it all looked great! Unfortunately the perm didn’t hold. Went back Michael and he re-permed it free of charge with no qualms and it held this time & looks great. Meanwhile, I also took my 14-year-old son to Michael for a cut as well and he actually listened to what we wanted and did a great cut. Mia at the desk(Michael’s wife & business partner) is very sweet & helpful. This isn’t a snazzy bar-like atmosphere — it’s a down to business salon which I like. I don’t need a bunch of 20-somethings covered in tattoos dancing around to get my hair done. I like this low-key friendly atmosphere with quality work. Will be taking my daughter for a hair style before her senior pictures and look forward to meeting the stylist who does the blow-outs too. Thanks for my great hair Michael!
