They have really creative dishes and the best vegan sushi options I’ve ever had! I got cold sake, ginger salad, miso soup, the vegetarian roll which is Pickled raddish, Cucumber, Yamagobo, Red pepper and the mushroom roll which is lightly battered & fried mushroom and cucumber roll toppeed with Unagi sauce. Super yummy and the ambiance is really nice, its like an old plantation style mansion, legend has it the women’s bathroom is haunted which is kind of fun. They also have great fusion rolls like the surf and turf, which is a rolle with fresh tuna and prime rib and a garlic chip. Love this place!

The restaurant is in an old mansion, which gives it a romantic and classy vibe. It’s definitely a more upscale sushi restaurant, great for dates or special occasions. However, the fish was not very fresh when I went. The yellowtail especially was very fishy and had a yellow coloring(fresh yellowtail does not taste fishy at all and has a more clear/white/pink coloring with a darker pink stripe). I went a few years ago, and my family and I didn’t enjoy it, so I never went back. Then my boyfriend recently went for lunch with coworkers and said it was one of the best sushi he’s had. So we went about a week later, and it wasn’t good! Their inconsistency in food quality isn’t a good sign. We went during the summer/fall and sat outside which was nice to enjoy the weather, but you overlook the parking lot, which doesn’t provide the greatest view.

Never. Ever. Go here with a large group. We came on a Wednesday night(8PM with reservations) with 13 people. We all only had one drink. I had to fetch our own water from the servers’ area. We sat at 8 and didn’t receive all of our meals by 11PM. The server said, «Whoops,» but she didn’t try to rectify the issue. Very upsetting. Thank goodness for purse wine!

Don’t do carry out here. They can’t get it right… and won’t make it right when they admit they made a mistake. They didn’t give us ½ the order when my husband picked it up. Then called to say we could come back and pick up our food IF we wanted to… are you kidding me!!! We paid for it! I asked if they could give us something for next time and he said ‘I don’t think we can.’ Will NOT return… it would have been so easy to make us repeat customers. So sad…

Super delicious teriyaki chicken, a little expensive. Would I go back more than once a month probably not. Definitely worth checking out thought. Didn’t do the sushi but it appears to be pretty good.

The sushi at Shiro is absolutely spectacular! I visited with a group of four for the first time the night before Halloween since there are rumors that the upstairs bathroom is hunted. I was very impressed! The drinks were very good and the sushi selection is huge! They also offer other dishes for the non-sushi lovers. I have already made reservations and I am going back this week!

The sushi is awesome! Get the Angry Mikey. Not on the menu. Avocado wrapped around shrimp. The atmosphere is ok. But that’s not what we come for. It’s the angry Mikey. We have always had great service!

The atmosphere was something to get used to — however the food was phenomenal! We had the fatty roll(twice) and enjoyed all the recommendations that Nikki had to offer us. She was fantastic and we will definitely be back!

My date and I went there 20 minutes before closing and they were more then happy to serve us. We got the edamame as an app and for our rolls we got a spicy shrimp and crab roll and the salmon on the beach. The spicy shrimp and crab was pretty good but the salmon on the beach sold me, it was delicious!

Where is the service? They didn’t have our reservation ready and said they weren’t sure when it would be??? Tried the bar, sat at the bar for 8 minutes — no menu, no water, no greeting. Finally got a server, was awkward, slow and unknowledgeable. The food is pretty good, but the service is such headache and a terrible way to start your night off.

Shiro was recommended to me by a friend who had eaten there many times. Her recommendations have always been excellent and Shiro was no exception. The restaurant is in a former mansion and the décor and ambiance are both beautiful. We were given our own private room and the food and service were on par with the best restaurants in the area. Prices were very reasonable and we will be back.

Several times a year I find myself in the Detroit Metro area visiting family and friends, and while a lot has changed over the years in this city, one thing remains constant and it’s the one place I insist on eating while in Detroit — Shiro Restaurant and Sushi Bar. Shiro in Japanese means Castle or White and it’s a fitting name for the historic Rogers Mansion that now houses this restaurant. The service here is always top notch, the waiters and waitresses never miss a beat, even during their peak dining periods. The food is without question some of the finest Japanese food that I have come across in the Detroit Metro area. It would take much too long to describe in detail everything I’ve had on the menu over the years, so here are a few of my favorites. The wasabi shumai are one of those rare delicacies. In all of dining experiences nothing has ever come close to these soft, perfect cooked, midly spicy wasabi wrappers filled with minced pork and vegetables. Served alongside a smear of wasabi mayonnaise and an onion and pepper relish, these are worth the trip all by themselves. The have a wonderful range of unique and flavorful vegetarian sushi including their AACC Roll(avocado, asparagus, cucumber topped and a crunchy spiced batter.) One of my favorite rolls is their Fresh Fashion Roll(roasted red pepper, pickled cucumber, pickled ginger and shredded radish all wrapped up with a cucumber. Their Hibachi grills are only served at lunch, which is a shame as they are truly one of the best parts of their vast Japanese menu. One word of warning, they get very busy, so do yourself a favor and call for a reservation, even if it’s just for two people. You don’t want to miss your chance at getting in. It’s simply that good. Finally had the chance to check Shiro out, and it turned out to be a huge disappointment. First of all, after we said how many people were dining, the host just left, without saying a word, two minutes later he came back and asked us to wait. We were seated pretty fast after that. After reading through the menu, my husband and I needed more time, which we told the server, so he didn’t come back for another 10 – 12 minutes. Ordering was followed by at least an hour long wait for our order(5 rolls and 2 nigiri). During this time our server told us twice it’s going to be 2 minutes, and then told us there was a «waiting list». To be fair, we did receive a decent edamame appetizer for our trouble. When our rolls came, they looked sloppy and were falling apart, even though the tables next to ours didn’t seem to have those problems. In my fatty tuna and green onion roll I found two bones in two separate pieces. At that time I chose to ignore that, just so we didn’t have to wait any longer for them to remake the roll. We ordered dessert as well, my husband’s tiramisu was pretty good, my ginger ice-cream had a lot of ice-crystals in it, and was drizzled with chocolate syrup to a point where it was more chocolate than ginger, and I didn’t want to finish it. The«cherry» on the cake was this: when we paid and left, our server followed us, yelling, my husband went back to see what was wrong(I thought I might’ve out the wrong amount of money, since we were paying cash). At that point the server confronted about our small tip(1.67) on our 65 $ check. Considering the level of service and the quality of food, even that tip was generous. Even though some items on the menu looked appealing, and I might have given it a second chance, given the staff’s attitude we will not be coming back or recommending it to any of our friends.

I regret skipping Shiro for the last 12 years I’ve lived in metro-Detroit, especially since I lived so close to it for 10 of those years! The location is just off the retail, chain trail farther north on Novi Road, so it is convenient to find, but easy to get in and out of. We went for lunch during the week. They have a great lunch menu that is reasonably priced and has a good variety. Service at lunch was good, though they remained fairly busy throughout. I loved the bento lunch. It’s a great way to try a variety of dishes to prepare for future visits. It’s also a good way to gently push one’s palate by trying a few dishes just outside of the usual comfort zone. The bento lunch started with delicious, gently spiced miso soup and a fairly standard salad. The box itself contained a variety of cold and hot dishes that went well together. There was a cold mashed potato salad that tasted just like traditional American barbecue with the difference in the mashed texture, a deep fried mushroom with a cream cheese filling, and several pieces of a fresh California roll. It also included marinated tofu with Napa cabbage kimchee, and a beef stir fry type dish. Many of the dishes were garnished with just the right vegetables or herbs to give an added crunch or slight change in flavor. My companions both enjoyed house rolls: double crab and fatty. Everyone was full and happy after lunch. I’m looking forward to checking out Shiro more.

Oh Shiro what has happened? It been about a year since the last we’ve eating here and it was the first place that we decided to go out without the new baby. The food and service has always been exceptional in the past so the choice was easy. This time exceptional was lacking in all categories. After being seated it took 20 minutes to take our drink order after multiple people kept asking if we’ve been helped. It was another 10 minutes till the bottle of wine showed up. Believe it not we were so happy to be out to dinner without child that weren’t upset waiting 30 minutes for a drink. We ordered the chicken wakatori appetizer which was quite delicious. That was the high point as from there it went down yet again. For dinner we asked for the Omakase sushi which leaves it to the chef as to what sushi to serve. In our case it seems he used this opportunity to clear out old fish. Kroger may not have the fanciest or purist sushi but at least it is of good and consistent quality. It would have been the better choice. There was a moment of almost redemption when the sushi chef handed us some sort of braised oyster that was quite delicious but alas it was a one off. The best thing on the the plate of sushi that was served to us was the spicy tuna roll which is easy to make taste good with the spicing that is used. That being said no other restaurant would serve a spicy tuna roll as Omakase. Though overpriced spicy tuna was probably the best part of the entrée it wasn’t enough for things to go further downhill. As we were seated at the sushi counter there wasn’t much space for all the dishes that piled up. I finally resorted to taking all my wife’s dishes and stacking them in front of me. Even on the seldom occasion that someone came around the dishes would still remain and the wife’s water glass would still lack said liquid. So I gave her what was left of mine. To top things off at the end they asked us to move in order to make room for another group. Normally not a big deal but if you’re going to stop by with such a request at least refill the water or grab a dish or two. I asked for the check instead. At the same I listed to the table behind us tell, not ask, the manager to remove the price of the sushi from the bill. Not a good sign. I wish I could say that this is the end of the story but alas it is not. When the check finally arrived I asked what the issues with the night were and the gentlemen said it was all the hostesses fault as to seating too many people or the like. The entertaining part of that is the fact that he is the one who sat us. His mind was definitely somewhere else. We still tipped at 20% as a tip in the US is really a servers pay more than a expression of the level of service that was provided. I wish I would have checked recent Unilocal reviews as it looks like they have been having issues as of late. I hope they fix them as the location is beautiful and the sushi in the past has been very good.

Came here for dinner with the family on Mother’s Day and this place was not prepared at all! I reserved a specific room 2 weeks in advance which is nothing special and I’ve sat in before and it was not available when we got there. We sat at a table for 6 and the waiter tried adding chairs and only fit 8 when I reserved for 9 and walked away. Umm am I supposed to sit on someone’s lap? We ended up having to add on a table after waiting for the waiter to come back. My mom arrived and asked where her dinner party was seated and the hostess said«just look around.» I asked for water multiple times and when our appetizers came, and we asked for plates the waiter said«just wait a bit, we ran out.» What kind of restaurant runs out of plates?! Horrible service! Our waiter, Chris, couldn’t have been any worse. He was just not fit to be a waiter. I’ve been to this restaurant a few times and every time I come, the quality of the food gets worse, and the specials are always the same! We ordered a lot of rolls for all of us. It was just average. The less fancy places have better sushi. We didn’t get soy sauce plates until we were half way done with the food. We ordered 13 rolls and appetizers(don’t judge, we were hungry!). I personally hate cream cheese on my sushi so I didn’t like the fatty roll. Spicy tuna tasted the same as everywhere else and the other rolls were just plain and average. Of all of our food, the picante tuna martini(everyone’s favorite appetizer), the cancun roll and the shake shake boom roll were the only rolls we enjoyed. I think the fact that we were getting horrible service, made us not enjoy anything. Good costumer service and being prepared is very important and Shiro not having any of this ruined our family’s experience here. We will never come back here again. The cool thing about this restaurant is the whole story behind the«haunted mansion.» Apparently it was a mansion and ghosts and other creepy things appeared at this mansion and it was sold and turned into a restaurant. The ambiance is really cool because you are literally having dinner inside a different room of a mansion but from our experience that’s about the only good thing here.

Have to be honest and say I have not tried the food yet– we just went for some sake at the bar. Of course, it’s a beautiful building and interior, and I loved the little sneak-away bar area. It’s intimate, closed off from the rest of the dining room and provides a great little ambiance. The bartender was semi friendly and semi attentive, which was fine. I felt that maybe he didn’t want to disturb our conversations, but he seemed to be moving very slowly overall. I found it also strange that although they offered about 7 – 9 different sakes, they served them in wine glasses… strange, and ick. Just curious, who drinks sake out of a wine glass??? They were priced moderately though, and while enjoyable, was a totally different experience drinking sake out of wine glasses. That is what primarily stood out to me in this visit. I took a look at their menus and wasn’t blown away by their selections but I did become curious at how their food would be. The building itself piqued my curiosity enough to want to go back– but it’ll be really hard choosing to go there for sushi with Ajishin down the street.

Love the ambience and atmosphere of this place, absolutely love that it’s in a haunted mansion. My friends and I didn’t make reservations, it is a Wednesday night and we were seated within five minutes. And then the wait happened for our waitress to come. Oh my goodness, took her over 20min after we mentioned something to the hostess. She seemed a bit overwhelmed and out of it. But still, if I ask you if you have this type of liquor, you should know. Every question that I asked her if she had this or this was replied with«I’m not sure, let me go check.» Irritating. She was very sweet and pleasant though. Not rude at all. The food came and it was not bad, not to impressed though. The best part was the martini’s, strong and tasty the way I like it. And the dessert was wow, amazing how delicious it was.
