Why is there a used bookstore so near the long-successful Rose’s Bookhouse in a city the size of O’Fallon? I’m sure I don’t know. It’s been about two years since I visited Paperbacks, Etc.,(in my defense, I haven’t had much time to read!). I didn’t even recall that as the name. The sign simply says, «Books.» I guess that’s all it needs to say to attract readers. However, it’s not all paperbacks. I recall much of the selection being old and quite a lot of it newly popular or popular again. Let me clarify that I don’t mean just bestsellers of three years ago or books that didn’t sell well and were sent to bargain overstock stores. It feels like the people who are doing the buying have a good idea of what will sell. They take trade-ins, too, and aren’t afraid to turn books away. I appreciate such pickiness because it is a sign that the buyers know what they are doing and that gives me hope that the place will stay in business!
