I’m sad to see this place has closed, because it was truly a community-operated and community-minded enterprise that showcased Oakland’s vibrant«maker» community. There used to be a shop in the front that offered a unique selection of Oakland-made clothing, artwork, and jewelry, with additional space off to the side housing a more formal gallery that you could peruse for free. Moreover, there was plenty of room in the back that served as workspaces for resident artists. The venue was also generous in opening up their space to community groups and events. Here’s hoping more spaces like this pop up in Oakland — or at least that there are more opportunities for local makers to sell their wares.

Such a rad space. A perfect place to find local art, wares, and clothing to rep some Oakland pride. Their baby clothes are beyond adorable(seriously, a baby infinity scarf?), though fairly pricey. A small curated selection of artwork and jewelry, as well as their art books and magazines, are what keep me coming back. Their gallery & studios serve as a really cool little getaway, and I’ve seen some really great pieces displayed. Can’t wait to come back during an opening.

Sad I found this place after doing all of my holiday shopping. A great gift store that was something for everyone.

Free local art gallery and art studio. Formerly LOAKal, this store/gallery/studio is a must visit in Jack London Square. In addition to the very cool Oakland swag they have for sale, they are always displaying some really nice local art. If you keep going inside, you will go into the studio, where I have run into artists at work. Very cool. During a visit on First Fridays, they had free beer, wine, and cheese. Definitely stop by if you are in the area!

What a cool shop! As a resident of Oakland, I like to show my colors and this is THE place to get all sorts of Oakland-centric stuff. Shirts, totes, hoodies, mugs, magnets, scarves, and on and on and my favorite — the jewelry! The sweetest necklaces, rings, pins, earrings. The whole enchilada. Fantastic. I will be doing all my holiday shopping here. Check it out!

Super cute! You basically won’t find anywhere else like this! Great place to find a gift for you BAE who loves the bay! Or a funny card or gift that will play to inside jokes, or something unique for that one family member you won’t know what to get.

One of my new faves for gift shopping! I came here to get a birthday gift for my boyfriend, a cool T-shirt by 5733. They were out of the size I wanted, but the girl who works the counter named Marie totally helped me out. She called the warehouse and had the size transported over to the store the next morning, and she even took down my number to call me the next day when it had arrived, just in time for his birthday! Thank you so much, Marie!, for saving the day! Needless to say, my boyfriend loved the shirt, and I felt pretty good spending my money on local goods. I agree with Alex L’s comment that you should just«Forget the mall.» Please give your money to local artists. I’m going to save up some money for this super cute hoodie tunic that I found there, another local art product. OMG, it’s so cute. I’m drooling thinking about it… counting the days till my next paycheck.

Forget the mall. This is where the Oakland’s hipsters go for the cool, obscure, ironic, puzzling, but most important locally-produced fashion and accessories. Even non-hipster 30-somethings like myself will find plenty of art and fashion of interest here. A collaboration between 5733 and East Bay Express, Loakal offers one of the most unique selections of original«street» art around. I personally love their t-shirt selection, which includes everything from obscure imagery to the now famous image honoring the urban myth that structures at the Oakland Pier inspired the walkers in «The Empire Strikes Back.» Even if you find yourself out of place here, the employees are very friendly and approachable. Often, they are also as decorated as the shelves of the store. It’s clear that Loakal is a welcoming home for all those who value art and self-expression.

I love coming here to browse and see what new items they have in. This store carries really cool tshirts with Bay Area motifs, even for babies! The jewelry is unique and very reasonably priced. I can’t stop myself from picking something up for myself every time I walk in to buy a gift for someone else. They carry various accessories, like wallets and bags, too. There is a small section dedicated to local artists which often has some cool paintings on the walls. The only problem I have is they close by 6 on weekdays, so I always have to hustle over there. Please check it out if you are ever in the area. You won’t be sorry.

Lots of kitchsy, fun stuff to buy, some with local references, some not. There’s an art studio in the back, with the usual gatherings of weird stuff and interesting art and stuff that you think is art but is really just the kitchen. I almost bought a onesie but couldn’t find one in 12 month size, so I passed on it, but if I’m in the neighborhood I’d stop by to see what cute stuff is there.

What an awesome spot to get to view and purchase local art!!! I had to run out before I bought more than my pocket could accommodate! They have tons of good stuff to look at in the front, and they host cool events. The real gem is the artist studios in the back where you can get a glimpse of the artists at work! Well worth the visit!!!

Lots of cool local stuff here. I’ll have to come back by when the gallery is open for sure. My wife and sister-in-law and I took a trip in to see some of the clothes they had. Pretty good selection of clothing for men/women and toddlers. Cool local trinkets, glassware, ceramics/pottery, and other art for sale.

Loakal has a ridiculous collection of super awesome creations from so many different types of artists.(Jewelry, clothing, posters/cards, paintings, terrariums, and lots more) It is a more than adequate representation of how rockin’ Oakland is. If someone asked me to sum up Oakland, I’d send them to Loakal to see how the locals represent their life in this city. The owner is fantastic. She is so friendly and fun to talk to. She loves Oakland and it shows. Loakal is the kind of place that makes me really proud to live here.

First Friday at the new location for Loakai started off with a BANG! Literally, fireworks, the whole shebang. Eddie and Loretta really know how to throw down an event! Nite Owl and Chris Granillo were the featured artists. Half of the show purely dedicated to beauty of the majestic owls, how could I resist? lOAKal, even in the name itself is… hella oakland :) I didn’t realize the genius of the name until I saw their hats. Located near the Jack London Square, this gallery is close yet far enough from the Oakland First Friday Art Murmur. No lines to see artwork, local merchandise, awesome music, dranks, what more can you ask for? As for their space, it is organized in 3 parts: boutique, gallery space, and artist studio space. It’s ginormous! You can spend a long time at Loakal because there are a lot of things to look at. Start off at the boutique. There are cool jewelry(ex. pressed laminated flowers, gear rings), clothing(ones with Eddie’s art is amazingggg), and random things like cards, clocks, furry friends, etc. Lots of support for local artists, which is amazing. The prices are very affordable and there is an online shop as well. The gallery space is really fun to go through because the layout is like an organized maze. There is a lot of art that is displayed and they are always curated really well. To finish off the night, so into the artist studio space to talk to the resident artists over a cool beer & wine. :) I’ve been to a couple of pther First Fridays as well as an event for Jack London Farmer’s Market and they have all been equally fun. Looking forward to October’s art show, which will feature a really lovely artist Terry Furry . Met him at the first event and my brother and I bonded with him over stories of our Catholic Schools(you’ll understand when you see his mixed media pieces) and love of plaid :) Super excited for future lOAKal events!

A must visit if you are near Jack London Square. Everything is handmade by mostly Bay Area artists. Great jewelry, bags, and shirt/sweatshirts. Even the salesgirl looks like an art piece with her hiptastic style. Oakland funky and fabulous. Highly recommend.

Want to shop locally? Here’s another place where you can – I’m loving all these local options. It’s a cute boutique(but a little more edgy than Modern Mouse) that’s a great place to buy gifts or items for yourself. I just went & checked it out this past weekend after meeting the owners at a friend’s birthday. They carry items from local artists & designers, such as men’s & women’s clothing, accessories(belt buckles, wallets, purses, bags), children’s & baby’s clothing, jewelry, paper goods & stationery, cosmetics, art & home décor. I was particularly interested in the jewelry, fiftyseven-thirty three shirts, & also liked the locally themed coasters, which were actually the first thing I happened upon when I walked in. I had looked online first & had wanted to get the Oakland tree earrings. They also have local street art printed on the shirts… the art that’s on the East Bay Express stand outside of Blue Bottle in Oakland(just a few blocks away) is on shirts here! Note that their website doesn’t have all of their in store items, & I believe the art listed on the website is more comprehensive than what’s actually in the store. So, I suggest visiting the shop & looking at their website to see everything that they have to offer. And guess what, there’s more… it’s also an art gallery with some artist studio space in the back! Very cool! There seem to be artists’ studios all over Oakland… I went to the Open Studios event in Jingletown, where there’s a whole ton of studios, last year. You can try to find street parking, most of which is metered, or there’s a garage in the block between Washington & Clay, 2nd& Embarcadero West(I think there are entrances on Washington & Clay). Located on the north side of 2nd between Clay & Jefferson(across from the Cost Plus World Market parking lot).

If you are from the Bay Area, you wanna visit Loakal. The Art, the Graf, the stuff you can’t find anywhere else is here. I was blown away. The art. Pushing all limits with art and design, I loved Loakal. These artists are really talented. I wanted everything cause I’m a fan of graphics, clothing and jewelry. Especially local, Bay Area and the 41510.

The temporary nature of things. If the world is truly as it appears, and this even is questionable, what’s certain is that what you see often endures only for a short time. We can make love stay. Who knows how to make love stay? 1. Tell love you are going to Junior’s Deli on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn to pick up a cheesecake, and if loves stays, it can have half. It will stay. 2. Tell love you want a momento of it and obtain a lock of its hair. Burn the hair in a dime-store incense burner with yin/yang symbols on three sides. Face southwest. Talk fast over the burning hair in a convincingly exotic language. Remove the ashes of the burnt hair and use them to paint a moustache on your face. Find love. Tell it you are someone new. It will stay. 3. Wake love up in the middle of the night. Tell it the world is on fire. Dash to the bedroom window and pee out of it. Casually return to bed and assure love that everything is going to be all right. Fall asleep. Love will be there in the morning. Jessica knows from whence the passage above derives. Loakal is a very special shop with art made here by people with whom we rub elbows maybe sometimes at lunch counters or the New Parish. Loakal is a pop-up. Loakal thereby is by definition temporary. Which saddened me when I learned of this the other day. I love Loakal. I would like to make this love stay. I will gladly offer Loakal half my cheesecake if this in a small way would help to make this happen.

I hope this pop-up stays up foreva! I’m so glad we explored this boutique during our Savor Oakland food tour(jewelry can be savored too, no?) I discovered so many adorable — and affordable — locally made goods and giftables. From a crystal bullet necklace to Oakland pride baby bibs to magnets and coffee mugs, all sporting some locally-made craftiness. It’s like a miniature Etsy for Oakland artists. What’s not to love?!

Great place for unique gifts and an extra treat, a gallery worthy art pieces you can enjoy for free. Everything Loakal sells is manufactured by local Oakland artists including clothes, jewelry, etc. I happened upon a black onesie with a graphic of an international spy and the words ‘Cool Like My Uncle’ displayed proudly. Since I recently became an uncle to a sweet little girl, this purchase was a no-brainer! Also the fact that I too am an international spy wanted by bad guys and good guys alike *wink* I definitely want to come back to see what other treasures I can find! PS– While this place takes credit cards, try to roll in here with some cash instead. It makes for a happier LOAKAL outfit.
