Very good and inexpensive. Mary was great with my two little boys. Now my favorite go to place for their haircuts

When we moved to the Dimond area, I wanted to make sure we supported local businesses and decided to take a chance for my children’s hair and dropped in. Just a little background, I am very picky with hair even for my kids. My son gets a very short buzz style so you have to pay attention to the details otherwise, it can really look bad… he gets a haircut every 3 weeks!
Not only were we blown away with how well she cuts hair and the level of attention she gives young children, my in-​laws took note of her expertise and now also have their hair cut by Mary. They drive from Fremont just to get a haircut.
Her prices are reasonable and her shop is cute and convenient. She’s a sweet heart and local and has been working in Oakland for 25 years. We’ve been going to her shop for 3 years and I’m pretty sure my children will continue to see her until they move away for college.
You may be thinking, why only my children? To be honest, I REALLY want to make the move to Mary however, like I said, hair is a big deal for me… I’m still working out how to break-​up with my hairstylist of 10 years so I can go to Mary-​seriously.
Look how she styles her own hair? It’s obvious she’s excellent!

Mary’s hair salon is the best! Great haircuts at reasonable prices. My husband and I have been going to her for 20 + years and love the friendly and personable atmosphere. No reason to go anywhere else.

Found out of shear frustration at the mixed results from cuts at Slick and Dapper and SuperCuts for my two young sons. Mary is experienced, takes her time and gets great results that my boys love.

I was pleasantly surprised by this little gem! I called less than an hour before closing, and they were able to take me immediately. The woman who cut my hair did a fantastic job, and she only charged me $ 20, which is a beyond amazing rate (I have super long, thick hair!). Not only did she trim my hair for this price, but she thinned it out and touched up my layers. This place is also quite clean, and it’s fairly modern in terms of aesthetics. I’m not a fancy hair salon kinda gal (working in education doesn’t afford one such luxury!) but I was more than satisfied with both my cut and the customer service I received. Highly recommended!

Bad attitude and totally treated me like some of her other FOB relatives… on top of that, worst haircut ever had — she didn’t even take her time to use a scissor, used a blade scrubbed my hair for 5 min, gave me the communist convict hairdo and rushed me out the door!!!

Walked in half an hour before closing and got seated right away. Told her I wanted some layering without losing length. She did exactly that quickly and efficiently and helped even out my hair in the back. Not too much small talk which I didn’t mind. She told me how to comb my hair to show off the layers and was very nice. Will probably get my hair cut here again because it’s close to home.

I had my hair cut by Wanna and she did a great job.
I have long, thick hair so I just asked for a trim and texturizing.
She was a good conversationalist and only did what I asked of her, careful to follow my instructions.
Very reasonably priced. Will definitely return.

Mary has been cutting my hair since I was a little kid, I always trust her and loves that she knows what she’s doing even when I change the type of haircut I want. After my haircuts, I notice people noticing my herrr! Makes me feel really good when people complement me on my hair!
I highly recommend Mary’s for anyone!

Have been going here since I was 12 or 13 years old. Seems fitting Mary would give me my last hair cut before I embark for college. Really a way to close things out. Thanks for the great hair, Mary!

I’m pretty again!!!
I’m contemplating moving to the Diamond District so I went sight seeing the area today. It’s important for me to support local/​small businesses so I stopped in. Walk-in’s are welcomed and I had time to kill.
Originally, the price made me gag. $ 10 for eyebrows is more of a threading price, not a waxing price. I went along with it for the experience, already prepared to not tip.
SHE. DID. WORK.
I have my father’s eyebrows. Not only are they bushy but the don’t grow in every direction. This lady saw this and pulled out all the necessary tools to make me look lovely. She used the wax, scissors, tweezers and a small brush. Oh trust me, she earned that $ 3 tip.
The only odd thing was getting my eyebrows waxed over a sink. It was resourceful because the angle really made a difference but it just caught me off guard. Regardless, if I DO move to the neighborhood I will regularly visit this business!

I was close to rating Mary’s a 2, but after happily getting my haircut here since moving to Laurel/​Dimond four years ago, I just couldn’t do it to Mary. The last two haircuts I’ve gotten have been from her newest hire (sorry, don’t now her name), and I’ve been butchered both times. Despite telling her on both occasions just a trim on top because my hair will stick up, she proceeds to just hack away.
On top of that, this newest hire has this weird method of cutting hair and having it fall all over your face, which isn’t terribly pleasant. Then she uses her blow dryer to clean off your apron/​drape and points it in the direction of your face, so more hair in the face. Great! Rather unpleasant, and haven’t experienced that previously.
Sorry Mary, very disappointed on the last two occasions and might just seek out a new place to get a haircut.

I’ve been going to Mary’s Salon for years and the prices are reasonable and the service is friendly! I usually get my eyebrows waxed and my hair layered by Wanna. No appointment is needed for a trim or eyebrows.

I have been going to Mary’s Hair Salon since I was a baby! They’re the only people I trust with my hair so far. They always know how to make me look pretty… Wana is my usual hairdresser, and she does my eyebrows and hair nicely. They’re funny and friendly as well. :) Also very affordable!

I would give Mary’s 1.5 stars. The place is ok for a cheapie cut, BUT when they feel like shampooing your hair (they’ve never consistent) they don’t use any conditioner, and they don’t even bother to blow dry your hair or style it a bit. For two dollars more go up the street to Diamond Beauty Salon and get hooked up with a nice cut and blow out.

Mary’s is definitely the only place I will ever go to get a haircut. I’ve been going their for trims and cuts for many years. The staff is really nice and welcoming. It may be a little pricey, but I don’t trust anyone else touching my hair.

Mary is a hidden gem in the Dimond District! She has been here for years and one of my best kept secrets.
We booked Mary for updos for my sisters wedding. She was so kind, she came in early for us and was so organized. We had 1 bride, 3 bridesmaids, 1 jr bridesmaid and 1 flower girl to do — all before noon! She easily accommodated us and our scheduling with the makeup artist so that it was well orchestrated.
All of us have such different hair and we walked in without a clear consensus of what we wanted to do with our hair. After consulting with Mary and showing her a few ideas, she was able to give each of us bridesmaids a look that fit us and looked cohesive without looking exactly the same. My hair is super straight and curls just don’t hold, I was looking at a 15+ hr day ahead of me. I can assure you that my curls looked just as good 15+ hours later! The flowergirl had a head full of gorgeous curls, she took a nap in the middle of the day and still woke up with flawless hair!
I love Mary because she is talented, professional and extremely patient and kind. What I also appreciate is that she does not give you tight curls/​pageant hair. She has great taste, your hair looks classic, elegant and modern. The brides updo was just that. She also offers great ideas and has a great vision, I totally trust my hair in her hands. Simply put: she knows what she’s doing and she does it well. She will make sure you look your very best. I am happy to provide photos to prove it!
I’ve had many haircuts and coloring by Mary and the one and only time I ever let anyone cut my long hair into a short shoulder length style was with Mary. She is someone you can trust to work with you through your many hair transformations (trust that I have had many), which is hard to find!

The first time I came here I was in desperate need of a hair trim.
I just had the worst dye job and it KILLED my ends.
I walked out of there with a brand new do and feeling amazing.
The ladies know what you want and it shows in there work.

Mary and her crew are tops. We’ve been all around but this is where our hair finds happiness. My wife doesn’t let me go anywhere else.
Meanwhile the Dimond is such the spot now. Maximum beautiful bread at La Farine’s, coffee from Peet’s, great groceries @ Farmer Joe’s, all the banks, sit-​down and take-​out eats, Dimond Library, Dimond Park, on and on, you could make a day of it. Plus ever more excellent public art everywhere you look.
This is living large, people. Love your local biz folks and support them, they are beautiful.
