Excellent work — Homy and Fred are really to be trusted for earthquake retrofit of apartment buildings and working on the repair and replacement of balconies suffering from dry rot. I was assisting in finding a contractor to do an seismic retrofit for a soft-​story apartment and balcony repair job due to dry rot in Alameda, and I kept hearing that West Coast Premier Construction dominated the town. (A soft story retrofit is done for buildings with ground-​floor parking and skinny, flimsy poles on the bottom story that can be crushed in an earthquake, and requires stronger walls and stronger steel frames on the ground floor to keep the building upright in an earthquake.) Now that the retrofit and repair job is done, it’s easy to see why. Homy is remarkably clear and honest. He gives an estimate on what he expects the job will cost and stays within those boundaries (although there were a few minor issues that did come up during construction, but well within expectations). Sometimes structural engineers give answers that are hard to understand; I found that Homy and Fred were astonishingly clear in their answers, and West Coast Premier Construction produced a design for the earthquake retrofit that I have full and complete confidence in. It can be intimidating to hire a company for a costly retrofit job, but I was happy to work with West Coast Premier because of the confidence I gained from the experience, and wouldn’t hesitate to call him up again.
