Went in here once cause i was driving by and saw steel guitars on the building. So we stopped and went in and the guy was so nice, he explained steel guitars in depth and played some country for us. I been playing guitar for over 10 years so i appreciated his playing skill. Hes truly a master of his instrument. Then he threw on the distortion and started playing Deep Purples«Smoke On The Water». That was rad! He let us look around ane play with guitars. We were in there for 30 minutes and he was so nice. Definitely recommend this place if you want a pedal steel guitar!

It’s a long drive from LA to Oceanside but it was well worth the trip. I bought an old pedal steel made in the 70s, not realizing it was a pull-release system or what the difference was between the various changer mechanisms. When it arrived, I found it was set up using an unusual pedal arrangement which made it difficult for a beginner like myself to learn to play using standard sheet music. The pull-release system was a bit too complex for me to attempt to rearrange on my own so I brought it to Steel Guitars of North County. Jim set it up and now it plays wonderfully. It took a little extra time since this steel was a tricky one but he wanted to get it just right. When I came to pick it up, Jim walked me through the setup and showed me which pegs and screws to tune and in which order, while I took notes. Jim’s dedication to his work sets this little music shop worlds apart from the typical big box musical instrument retailers. When it comes time to readjust my steel, I’ll be sure to bring it back here.

We made a special trip from LA to visit Steel Guitars of North County; and it was well worth it! It happened to be a day when they were having a steel guitar show. It was totally packed full of people who love steel guitars, performers and people showing off their vintage instruments. Though they were busy, they took time to help me. Even during the show, I got to try several lap steel guitars. There was no pressure and the staff were super helpful. They are in it for the love, not just for the sale. They was very knowledgeable and did not try to sell me the most expensive guitar in the store. It is the opposite of large music retailers, they are down to earth, knowledgeable and want you to make the best decision for you.
