A very strange cornfield Stupas are Buddhist religious monuments. They date back millennium and were originally just piles of dirt. Over the centuries they have changed into many different forms but the idea remains the same. Peace. Yeah, I knew about stupas but never expected to see one in a Connecticut cornfield. I just happen to be driving by on a back road in Ct when my eye caught a glimpse of something that wasn’t quite right. One of those things that you see but your brain can’t really process. My friend saw it too and she quickly told me to turn the truck around. We went back and sure enough something odd was there. I couldn’t tell exactly what it was but it sure didn’t belong in a cornfield. Of course we got out of the truck and walked up to the strange object and sure enough it was a stupa. A very nice stupa indeed. In fact the sign said that it was the very first stupa in Connecticut and since I’ve never seen another one around here it’s easy to believe the sign. The whole idea of a stupa is to walk clockwise around it and get all peaceful and introspective. Will this stupa help achieve world peace? I suspect that most nasty and loud people won’t take the time to walk around the stupa or will even care it exists. Then again you never know. Perhaps someone will achieve inner harmony, peace and all kinds of good stuff walking around the stupa. If nothing else the stupa in a Connecticut cornfield was unexpected and bizarre. And unexpected and bizarre is always welcome and cool.
